Holidays are sometimes
\nhard for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel melancholy, not
\nsocial.\u00a0 <\/span>Holidays make me think a
\nlot.\u00a0 <\/span>I have a strong desire to make them
\nspecial<\/i>, yet I have an innate understanding that the specialness will not
\noccur.\u00a0 <\/span>Dichotomy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, melancholy.<\/span><\/p>\n

But today\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Today is Thanksgiving, and we made a new
\nfriend.\u00a0 <\/span>A friend who represents the
\nspirit of the holiday.\u00a0 <\/span>The magic of the
\nseason.<\/span><\/p>\n

His name is Javier.<\/span><\/p>\n

I looked out the window
\nand saw a vehicle pulled into the last spot of the street with trunk open.\u00a0 <\/span>This usually indicates INCOMING<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>Normally, incoming donation for the Little
\nYellow Food Pantry.\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes, incoming
\nwarm coats for Project Warmth.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Sometimes, incoming gifts of delicious cookies.<\/span><\/p>\n

But today, I was not sure\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of bringing the bags that he pulled out
\nof the car to the porch for donation, he was going straight to the pantry.\u00a0 <\/span>I reassessed \u2013 maybe this was someone who
\nneeded food, not someone giving food.<\/span><\/p>\n

I went out to say hello and
\nwas greeted with the biggest smile.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is your box??\u201d he
\nasked, pointing to the Little Yellow Free Pantry.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Do you need food?\u201d I asked.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The smile returned.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNO!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>No.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I do not need food.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I <\/span>GIVE FOOD<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And that was the start of
\nan hour-long conversation, and the beginning of a new friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Javier is an immigrant.\u00a0 <\/span>He came to the USA from Honduras, alone, 18
\nmonths ago.\u00a0 <\/span>And for the first 6 of those
\nmonths, his food came from a Little Free Pantry, one that was located outside
\nthe Central Library in Arlington, Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Javier told us his story,
\nhe expressed his gratitude over and over.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Gratitude for the country.\u00a0 <\/span>For the
\nfood.\u00a0 <\/span>For the people.<\/span><\/p>\n

When he first arrived and got
\na job, he kept $1 of his earnings.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cOne
\ndollar,\u201d he said, \u201cOne dollar.\u00a0 <\/span>In
\nAmerica. \u00a0<\/span>What food can be gotten with
\none dollar?\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>The rest of the money he sent
\nhome to his wife and children, his mother, and used to pay part of the rent for
\na tiny space he was sharing with another immigrant.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, like so many who make
\ntheir way to this country, he was resourceful.\u00a0
\n<\/span>And strong.\u00a0 <\/span>And determined.<\/span><\/p>\n

He got a bicycle.\u00a0 <\/span>He got more work.\u00a0 <\/span>He got his driver\u2019s license.\u00a0 <\/span>He saved and got a car.\u00a0 <\/span>And he got more jobs<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He went to university back
\nhome.\u00a0 <\/span>He had a very good job in his
\ncountry.\u00a0 <\/span>But now here, here in the land
\nof the free, he wakes up at 3:30 am to begin his days.\u00a0 <\/span>He studies English on an app.\u00a0 <\/span>He reads a book.\u00a0 <\/span>He eats his meal.\u00a0 <\/span>Then he begins one of four jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are jobs that some
\nwould say are \u201cbeneath him\u201d, but he works hard.\u00a0
\n<\/span>He saves.\u00a0 <\/span>He sends money home,
\neven to support a cancer charity because his mother has breast cancer.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And he is thriving
\nhere.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Javier spent every dime<\/i>
\nhe had made today to buy food for others, strangers.\u00a0 <\/span>He didn\u2019t know where<\/u> he would donate
\nit \u2013 the pantry he used to frequent has been moved to a new location and he
\ndidn\u2019t know where it was.\u00a0 <\/span>He searched
\nonline and found us \u2013 the Little Yellow Free Pantry.\u00a0 <\/span>So, without ever meeting us, without having
\nbenefited from our services, he came to give back.\u00a0 <\/span>Give back to the country and the people who
\nare giving him a new life.<\/span><\/p>\n

We talked for quite a
\nwhile outside but it was cold, so David invited him in.\u00a0 <\/span>We sat at our messy kitchen table and learned
\nmore about his life.\u00a0 <\/span>His 3 sons.\u00a0 <\/span>His wife.\u00a0
\n<\/span>We got to meet his wife when he video chatted her to introduce us.\u00a0 <\/span>I couldn\u2019t help but notice \u201cmi amor\u201d was
\nwritten across the screen as her ID in his phone.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We met his mother.\u00a0 <\/span>He video chatted her and interpreted for us.\u00a0 <\/span>I told him to please explain to her how
\ngrateful we were for his donations, and that she raised a very kind man.<\/span><\/p>\n

Someone had donated
\npumpkin pies, and we had one left in the fridge.\u00a0 <\/span>I offered it to him even before I heard his
\nstory and he had accepted with a smile.\u00a0 <\/span>As
\nwe talked, he said that last year was his first Thanksgiving in his new
\ncountry.\u00a0 <\/span>He had eaten pumpkin pie and
\nremembered it fondly.\u00a0 <\/span>But this year, he
\nhad told his wife earlier today, no pumpkin pie.\u00a0 <\/span>And then magically \u2013 PUMPKIN PIE.\u00a0 <\/span>Ahhh, this<\/i> explained the shine in his
\neyes when he took the dessert from my hands.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

If you ever doubt that
\nimmigrants are what make this country amazing, please let me introduce you to
\nJavier.\u00a0 <\/span>Listen to his story.\u00a0 <\/span>Hear how hard he works.\u00a0 <\/span>Feel the hope in his heart that he will be
\nable to bring his beautiful wife and children to America.<\/span><\/p>\n

That<\/span><\/i> is thankful.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is what deserves
\nThanksgiving.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nmelancholy, but truly special.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Thank you
\nfor reminding me what true Thanksgiving is.<\/span><\/p>\n
