You\u2019ll also find a book group summary, DNFs and CGSs, and some brilliant new authors I discovered below too. Alongside my blog posts have been my reviews for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shinynewbooks.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Shiny New Books<\/strong><\/a>, some of which I\u2019ll mention here too. This year I\u2019ve added a monthly stats line which reveals fewer 10\/10 reads this year (although I had plenty of 9s).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where did 2024 go?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>JANUARY<\/strong>: The year begins, as always, with some reading resolutions. You\u2019ll have to wait until my stats post to see if my plan to concentrate on the TBR whenever possible worked! While I didn\u2019t formally run <strong>Nordic FINDS<\/strong> this year, I did make an effort to read a few books by Nordic authors. My <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/watchlist-nov-and-dec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Watchlist<\/strong> write-up of my pre-Christmas viewing<\/a> concentrated on Series 3 of the so-brilliant <em>Slow Horses<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Books read: 10, blog tours: 4, 10\/10 reads: 0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FEBRUARY<\/strong>\u00a0was the 4th <strong>#ReadIndies<\/strong> month hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kaggsysbookishramblings.wordpress.com\/2023\/02\/01\/welcome-to-reading-independent-publishers-month-2023-readindies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kaggsy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lizzysiddal2.wordpress.com\/2023\/02\/01\/welcome-to-reading-independent-publishers-2023-readindies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lizzy<\/a> and 6 reviews qualified.\u00a0Jan-March is the Japanese Literature Challenge, hosted by Dolce Belezza, and I read <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/snow-country-by-yasunari-kawabata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kawabata\u2019s <em>Snow Country<\/em><\/a> which I didn\u2019t really warm to, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/point-zero-by-seicho-matsumoto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matsumoto\u2019s <em>Point Zero<\/em><\/a> was rather good \u2013 he\u2019s seen as one of the great popularisers of crime fiction in Japan. February contained my first, and probably only two poetry reads of the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/weekend-miscellany-the-skip-the-novels-and-the-poems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Modern Fog<\/em> by Chris Emery<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/tristan-yseult-by-harry-bonelle-blogtour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Tristan \/ Yseult<\/em> by Harry Bonelle<\/a> were very different from each other and both good. <\/p>\n<p>Books read: 10, blog tours: 4, 10\/10 reads: 2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MARCH<\/strong>: Is marked by the longlist announcement of one of my favourite prizes \u2013 namely <strong>The Dylan Thomas Prize<\/strong> \u2013 I read Camilla Grudova\u2019s short stories <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/dylan-thomas-award-longlist-celebration-the-coiled-serpent-by-camilla-grudova\/\"><em>The Coiled Serpent<\/em><\/a> from the list. It\u2019s also Reading Ireland month hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/746books.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cathy<\/a> and I read two novels by <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/reading-ireland-month-flattery-and-nolan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flattery and Nolan<\/a>. It was also the month I read a book that I thought could be my book of the year \u2013 but I\u2019m not letting on here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Books read: 11, blog tours: 3 + 1 at Shiny, 10\/10 reads: 2.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"145\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-135634.jpg?resize=800%2C145&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29668\" style=\"width:auto;height:175px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-135634.jpg?w=951&amp;ssl=1 951w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-135634.jpg?resize=300%2C54&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-135634.jpg?resize=768%2C139&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>APRIL<\/strong>\u00a0had just one reading challenge in the 1937 Club hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuckinabook.com\/1940-club-all-your-reviews-1940club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kaggsysbookishramblings.wordpress.com\/club-pages\/1940-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kaggsy<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 I revisited and updated an old review of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/the-1937-club-ali-nino-by-kurban-said\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ali and Nino<\/a><\/em> by Kurban Said for it. The month\u2019s reading was dominated by two splendid NF books \u2013 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/all-you-need-is-love-the-end-of-the-beatles-by-peter-brown-and-steven-gaines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">All You Need is Love: The End of the Beatles<\/a><\/em> by Peter Brown and Steven Gaines, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/all-you-need-is-love-the-end-of-the-beatles-by-peter-brown-and-steven-gaines\/\">The Blues Brothers<\/a><\/em> by Daniel De Vis\u00e9, and I got my review of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/shinynewbooks.co.uk\/orbital-by-samantha-harvey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orbital<\/a><\/em> by Samantha Harvey in at Shiny before the Booker longlist was announced. <\/p>\n<p>Books read: 8, blog tours: 4, 10\/10 reads: 2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAY<\/strong>\u00a0was quiet on challenges, but heavier on blog tours. Our book group read <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/review-catch-up-novels-by-marian-engel-alicia-drake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bear<\/a> <\/em>by Canadian author Marian Engels \u2013 a book guaranteed to provoke a good(!) discussion. <\/p>\n<p>Books read: 8, blog tours: 6, 10\/10 reads: 0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JUNE<\/strong>\u00a0of course sees the start of 20 Books of Summer, as always hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/746books.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cathy<\/a>, which I cheat at mercilessly although all books are from my TBR, managing to read 8 books and reviewing 5 of them. It also marked the return of \u2018Reading the Meow\u2019 hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/potpourri2015.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mallika of Literary Potpourri<\/a>, and I read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/boxes-by-pascal-garnier-readingthemeow2024-20booksofsummer24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Boxes<\/em> by Pascal Garnier<\/a>! <\/p>\n<p>Books read: 11, blog tours: 2, 10\/10 reads: 0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"784\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-145541.jpg?resize=784%2C190&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29669\" style=\"width:auto;height:175px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-145541.jpg?w=784&amp;ssl=1 784w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-145541.jpg?resize=300%2C73&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/annabookbel.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-02-145541.jpg?resize=768%2C186&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>JULY<\/strong>: I added another 5 to my 20 Books of Summer. With 13 read, that left me an achievable remainder for August! My only 10\/10 read this month was Sinead O\u2019Connor\u2019s memoir <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/rememberings-by-sinead-oconnor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rememberings<\/a><\/em>, read to celebrate the anniversary of her untimely death, a wonderfully witty and painful memoir full of love. Changing tack, one of my other hobbies apart from reading is <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/jigsaw-puzzle-times-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doing jigsaws, and I wrote a feature on it<\/a> (the first of more, perhaps?) <\/p>\n<p>Books read: 10, blog tours: 4 + 1 at Shiny, 10\/10 reads: 1<\/p>\n<p><strong>AUGUST<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>#WITMonth<\/strong> \u2013 Women in Translation, and I read <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/two-contemporary-french-novels-de-vigan-and-mehdi-for-witmonth-20booksofsummer24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 French novels<\/a> for it: <em>Kids Run the Show<\/em> by Delphine De Vigan and <em>Nothing is Lost <\/em>by Clo\u00e9 Mehdi \u2013 both gritty, dark and very much giving two different state of the nation views! I finished my 20 Books of Summer in style by adding in an extra four titles from the TBR! I also caught up with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/winstonsdad.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stu<\/a>\u2018s Spanish &amp; Portuguese Reading Month with a novella by <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/20booksofsummer24-no-10-a-luminous-republic-by-andres-barba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andr\u00e9s Barba<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Books read: 15, blog tours: 1, 10\/10 reads: 2<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEPTEMBER<\/strong>\u00a0is always a busy month for me \u2013 back at school \u2013 tired in the evenings, so less reading done. I reviewed three excellent books for Shiny, including <em><a href=\"https:\/\/shinynewbooks.co.uk\/rare-singles-by-benjamin-myers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rare Singles<\/a><\/em> by Ben Myers which was very close to a 10\/10 but not quite and <a href=\"https:\/\/shinynewbooks.co.uk\/dear-dickhead-by-virginie-despentes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Dear Dickhead<\/em><\/a> by Virginie Despentes, trans Frank Wynne, an e-mail epistolary novel no less. Blog tours included two Nordic books \u2013 the new <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/the-burning-stones-by-antti-tuomainen-blog-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antti Tuomainen<\/a> \u2013 getting laughs out of saunas, and <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/dark-as-night-by-lilja-sigurdardottir-blog-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lilja Sigur<em>\u00f0<\/em>ard\u00f3ttir<\/a>\u2018s latest \u2018\u00c1r\u00f3ra Investigation\u2019 story. Then there was the <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/my-rude-awakening-by-e-c-featherstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story of the hamper and the book inside it<\/a>\u2026  In between, I started a new series of themed archive posts in \u2018<strong>Five feat\u2026\u2019<\/strong>  <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/five-feat-surrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Surrey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/five-feat-trains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trains<\/a> being the first two, and I read an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/simenon-a-maigret-for-the-1970club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maigret<\/a> for Simon and Kaggsy\u2019s <strong>1970 Club<\/strong>. <strong>Nonfiction November<\/strong> always encroaches slightly into the end of November, and I started my involvement with a review of <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/nonfiction-november-my-year-in-nf-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NF read <\/a>since last time. The month was capped off by a superb spy novel set in Bahrain \u2013 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/nonfiction-november-my-year-in-nf-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Peacock and the Sparrow<\/a><\/em> by I S Berry. <\/p>\n<p>Books read: 11, blog tours: 4, 10\/10 reads: 0<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOVEMBER<\/strong>\u00a0is a super-busy month with some big month-long themes: notably <strong>Nonfiction November<\/strong>, hosted by five different bloggers \u2013 I took part in weeks\u00a01 which began last month, then weeks <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/nonfiction-november-week-2-choosing-nf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a> (hosted by Frances),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/nonfiction-november-week-3-book-pairings-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a>\u00a0(hosted by\u00a0Liz<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/nonfiction-november-week-4-mind-openers\/\">4<\/a> (hosted by Rebekah) with themed posts, and some of those nf reads were short so just happened to fit into \u2026 <strong>Novellas in November<\/strong>, hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bookishbeck.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rebecca<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/746books.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cath<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/746books.com\/\">y<\/a>. Most of my reads this month fitted one or other of these tags. Additionally, there was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lizzysiddal2.wordpress.com\/2024\/11\/30\/german-literature-month-xiv-wrapup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">German literature month<\/a><\/strong>, hosted by LIzzy and\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/novnov24-an-assortment-of-novellas-morpurgo-magariel-schenkel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">novella<\/a>\u00a0squeezed in for that, and finally <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dolcebellezza.blogspot.com\/2024\/10\/welcome-to-norway-in-november-and.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norway in November<\/a><\/strong> hosted by Dolce Belezza and a final <a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/a-novnov24-read-for-norway-in-november-doppler-by-erlend-loe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">novella<\/a> for that too. However, my most anticipated read of the month didn\u2019t disappoint \u2013 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/karlas-choice-by-nick-harkaway-blogtour\/\">Karla\u2019s Choice<\/a><\/em> by Nick Harkaway. I also got to see Robert Powell and Elizabeth Garner at Blackwell\u2019s discussing her father\u2019s latest collection of essays, memoir, poems and stories, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/celebrating-alan-garners-life-of-creativity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Powsels and Thrums<\/a><\/em>. Finally, I decided it was time for a re-read of Foucault\u2019s Pendulum by Umberto Eco and announced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/a-plan-for-jan-echoes-of-eco-ii-re-reading-foucaults-pendulum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Echoes of Eco II<\/a><\/strong> in case anyone cares to read along with me.<\/p>\n<p>Books read: 14, blog tours: 3, 10\/10 reads: 3<\/p>\n<p><strong>DECEMBER<\/strong>\u00a0had no blog tours and only one reading challenge in <a href=\"https:\/\/librofulltime.wordpress.com\/2023\/12\/01\/dean-street-press-december-2023-main-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Dean Street December<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0hosted by Liz for which I read the final Elvis mystery by Daniel Klein. After finishing our last round of \u2018Book Assocation\u2019 we returned to an A-Z of flora &amp; fauna for subsequent choices \u2013 books pitched had to be associated with, feature, or have in the title an animal or plant beginning with the requisite letter \u2013 then we do a random pick. Our December meeting is always \u2018Book Group Curry Night\u2019 and over our popadoms, we discussed our favourite reads of the year. Josephine Johnson\u2019s Pulitzer-winning <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/book-group-report-now-in-november-by-josephine-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Now in November<\/a><\/em> just about came out top, it was my favourite. However, we all agreed that the most memorable book \u2013 for all the wrong reasons \u2013 was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/review-catch-up-novels-by-marian-engel-alicia-drake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bear<\/a><\/em> by Marian Engel!  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The DNFs and CGSs.<\/h3>\n<p>I had no DNFs this year until December when I finally had one! I did have one CGS, (Couldn\u2019t Get Started) which was <em>Cat\u2019s Eye<\/em> by Margaret Atwood, I couldn\u2019t get beyond the first chapter \u2013 the rest of our book group largely enjoyed it \u2013 I will try it again another time.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Biggest Disappointments<\/h3>\n<p>Another book group choice \u2013 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/short-reviews-catch-up-susie-dent-fred-sirieix-barbara-pym-michael-findlay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some Tame Gazelle<\/a><\/em> \u2013 Barbara Pym\u2019s debut novel was just tedious. Also E C Featherstone\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/annabookbel.net\/my-rude-awakening-by-e-c-featherstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">My Rude Awakening<\/a><\/em> \u2013 an effectively self-published narrative memoir, had some good bits, but just had too much explicit sex in it for me!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Brilliant Discoveries <\/h3>\n<p>Mainly hanks to Orenda and Corylus books, I read loads of new to me crime\/thriller authors, mostly in translation, many of them Nordic!
