I stick to three ingredients or fewer, ideally something stirred, or better yet, built directly in the glass from which I\u2019ll be drinking. Breaking out the shaker is a rare occurrence for me. But every so often, a drink enters my orbit that makes the requisite rigorous upper body workout that comes with the territory seem worthwhile. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/recipes\/bar-agricoles-japanese-cocktail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bar Agricole\u2019s Japanese Cocktail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of those drinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I first tried their version of the Jerry Thomas original last summer while visiting Quince in San Francisco, the Jackson Square restaurant where Bar Agricole is in residence, overseeing the cocktail program. \u201cWe always wanted to make Milk &amp; Honey\u2013style drinks with great ingredients,\u201d says Thad Vogler, owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/baragricole.com\/collections\/agricole-epic-collection?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bar Agricole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a San Francisco bar turned spirits company. \u201cThis is a perfect example\u2014a tight little recipe that allows us to use ingredients with real provenance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ingredients in question\u2014California brandy, housemade orgeat and aromatic bitters\u2014transform the drink into something far more enticing than its three elements would suggest on paper. The drink is layered and rich, but not to the point of spoiling the food it is served alongside. Despite its name, in Vogler\u2019s hands, the Japanese Cocktail becomes the perfect liquid representation of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCalifornia\u2019s state spirit should be AVA brandy, and it\u2019s my favorite cocktail spirit,\u201d says Vogler, noting that he uses Bar Agricole\u2019s own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/baragricole.com\/products\/biodynamic-california-brandy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biodynamic Calfiornia brandy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a blend of barrels aged 8 to 15 years, for the base. Quince makes its own orgeat\u2014\u201canother great California cocktail ingredient, as beautiful almonds grow here,\u201d Vogler says\u2014as well as its own aromatic bitters to round out the recipe. In fact, the farm that grows the grapes for the brandy and for the high-proof spirit in the bitters is the same one that grows the almonds that go into the orgeat. \u201cSo it\u2019s a single-estate, grower-producer cocktail,\u201d says Vogler.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To me, it demonstrates the power of a simple drink done well. It is, without a doubt, a cocktail worth traveling for.
