Since resuming acceptance of cultural resourcemanagement<\/a> (or CRM) projects this spring, we continue to receive
\ncollections submitted for curation to the State Museum of Pennsylvania\u2019s
\nSection of Archaeology at a steady pace, and notable collections have arrived from
\nnearly every corner of the Commonwealth.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n

Beginning in Beaver County, northwest of Pittsburgh along
\nthe Ohio River, 11 sites, a variety of both historic and precontact, were
\ninvestigated ahead of the massive construction project for oil giant Shell\u2019s petrochemicalcomplex<\/a>. \u00a0Once operational, the
\nethane cracker plant will supply other industries with plastic pellets called nurdles<\/a> (a new artifact type
\nto be added to the lexicon for future archaeologists).<\/p>\n

The Jack\u2019s Reef Corner-notched projectile point seen here
\ndates to the Middle Woodland period (1850 \u2013 950 B.P.) and was recovered during
\nphase II excavations at the Farmstead\/Hamletsite<\/a> (36BV0051), a multi-component stratified site situated on the
\nfloodplain of the Ohio River. Produced from Flint Ridge chert, the asymmetrical
\nshape of the point is the result of reworking or resharpening its cutting edge.
\nThe artifacts and excavation records from these excavations contribute to our
\nunderstanding of the past and movement across the landscape during the
\nprecontact period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Traveling from the western edge of the state all the way across
\nto the southeast corner in Delaware County, the Mid-County Expressway I-476, or
\nBlue Route project is the next submission. A long dormant legacy project that unearthed
\na dozen mid-19th to early 20th<\/sup> century sites has received its proper
\nprocessing and has now been curated. Open to traffic in 1992, the survey work conducted
\nin the mid-1980s for this highway project identified a wide range of site functions
\nsuch as farmhouses and tenant dwellings, a whetstone factory and a bottle dump
\nassociated with a prohibition-era speakeasy. This project also identified the
\nlocation and boundaries of the Trinity UAME<\/a> (Union American
\nMethodist Episcopal) Church property.<\/p>\n

Nearly all of the 137 artifacts recovered from the Trinity
\nUAME Church (36DE0021) were either architectural in nature such as fragments of
\nwindow glass and brick and nails, or tableware, including whiteware ceramics
\nand glass drinking vessels or containers. One small find\/personal church
\nartifact that stands out is the metal watchcase opener\/ key ring fob seen here,
\nadvertising Boss watchcases from a watchmaker and jeweler from nearby Malvern,
\nPa. A brief internet search yielded similar, although not exact examples of
\nthis fob. Additional research may be able to narrow its date of manufacture and
\nuse beyond roughly the turn of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Sporting the shape of a keyhole, the fob reads \u201cBUY BOSS WATCH
\nCASES\u201d and \u201cTRADEMARK IN EVERY CASE\u201d encircling the letters \u201cCo\u201d inside of a
\nkeystone on the obverse. On the reverse: \u201cCOMPLIMENTS OF JOHN KIRSCHNEK
\nWATCHMAKER AND JEWELER MALVERN, PA\u201d. This small find is the tangible evidence
\nof a watchmaker and a reflection of consumerism and social behavior.<\/p>\n

Working our way to the north, in the coal regions of Luzerne
\nCounty, additional material from the University of Maryland\u2019s Anthracite
\nHeritage Program excavations have been submitted for curation. A residential building
\non Canal Street in the patch town of Lattimer was excavated, continuing their academic
\nresearch on socio-economic issues and troubled labor conditions surrounding the
\nlate 19th<\/sup> and early 20th<\/sup> century coal mining industry. <\/p>\n

A large percentage of the overall collection is comprised of
\narchitectural material like brick, nails, and window glass, as well as an
\nassortment of turn of the last century glass beverage bottles. One small find that
\nstands out from the Canal Street Lattimer site (36LU0312) collection is the 1887
\nItalian 10 centesimi<\/i> coin seen here. \u00a0While in relatively poor condition, this coin wonderfully
\nrepresents one of the many ethnic immigrant groups that came seeking employment
\nin the anthracite fields during coal\u2019s heyday and ultimately settled in the
\nregion..<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
