Queggestion describes a suggestion made as a question. Here is an example.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you try getting up earlier?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 The person asking this isn\u2019t really asking. They are indirectly\u00a0stating their expectation.<\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0\u201cwhy don\u2019t you\u2026\u201d<\/em>\u00a0here are other queggestion starters we can easily recognize once we know where to look.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if you\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you think that\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHaven\u2019t you\u2026.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 (\u201cWhy haven\u2019t you\u201d<\/em>\u00a0is similar but with more judgment built-in)<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you tried\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you want to\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t it possible to\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Perhaps you will think of others. In each case, the person queggestioning may intend to be helpful, but they short-circuit the learning process of the person they ask. That person must stop their creative problem-solving to consider the suggestion hidden in the question.<\/p>\n

A sincere, open-ended inquiry that sparks joint consideration is an essential skill for leaders to build, especially if they want to develop other leaders who will be evaluated for their critical thinking skills. If we try to lead by queggestions, we delay their development and ownership of any resulting wins or losses.<\/p>\n

Reframing for Clarity<\/h3>\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Rather than ask:<\/th>\nWe do better by asking:<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n
Can\u2019t you hire another employee to cover this?<\/td>\nWhen and how do you make decisions to add staff? (Follow-up: Is your approach doing everything you need it to do?)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Why haven\u2019t you already made the investment\/the donation?<\/td>\nYou said you were going to invest\/give. What\u2019s holding you back right now?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Don\u2019t you want to take advantage of the benefits?<\/td>\nWhich benefits appeal most, and which are you most likely to use?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
What if you sat down with them to work through the conflict?<\/td>\nWhat have you already tried to do in addressing the conflict?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
When will you put together a strategy session?<\/td>\nSome folks hold strategy sessions for matters like this. What is your experience with them?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Couldn\u2019t you adjust the budget to accommodate this?<\/td>\nWhat are the financial implications?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Aren\u2019t you going to talk with your coworkers about this and get their advice?<\/td>\nWho is best equipped to advise you here?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Is it possible to get some training for this?<\/td>\nWhat would you like to do?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
