{"id":7079644,"date":"2026-10-08T03:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T03:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7079644"},"modified":"2026-10-08T03:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T03:16:12","slug":"working-with-a-disengaged-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7079644","title":{"rendered":"Working with a Disengaged Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been watching a friend struggle recently as she tries to manage a team of people who were not engaged.\u00a0 Read\u2026 \u2018they really didn\u2019t care\u2019.\u00a0 The result is demoralizing for everyone: infighting, poor quality work, absenteeism, poor customer service and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Admittedly, this is a very large corporation where the bottom line is far removed from this team.\u00a0 If you asked them what drives them at work, the answer would inevitably be \u2018my pay cheque\u2019, and \u2018the weekend\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For big corporation or small business, this is not an uncommon hurdle that leaders or managers face today.\u00a0 We have teams of people who can\u2019t connect to the end goals, don\u2019t hold any allegiance to the company, nor the cause, and somehow expect their pay cheque to arrive bi-weekly.\u00a0\u00a0 They feel privileged and even entitled.<\/p>\n<p>And in some cases, can you blame them?\u00a0 The economy is strong and they could probably get a job elsewhere.\u00a0 But the truth is that we have done a very poor job at making them feel otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what can we do about this?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t think the answer is to try to provide a happier, healthier work environment, nor is it to pay them more money.\u00a0 None of these things are driving these people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They key here is to make a connection \u2013 between \u2018the plan\u2019 and the work they do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan.\u00a0 What is the ultimate goal?\u00a0 Profit?\u00a0 Service?\u00a0 A product launch? Or something less \u2018corporate\u2019 like the altruistic part of the company \u2013 time and resource donations to local causes or simply the power of employment within the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many ways to connect people to the cause.\u00a0 We are recognizing these days, that individuals are often motivated in different ways, and we might need to customize the connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, connect the people, individually, or as a group, to the plan or to the cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How?\u00a0 It\u2019s all about education.\u00a0 Not just once a year, but on a regular basis. \u00a0What are we trying to do?\u00a0 Why are we doing it and most importantly of all, how does it affect each one of us?\u00a0 Everyone needs to be reminded regularly as to how it affects them \u2013 what\u2019s in it for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, there may well have to be multiple stories here to satisfy multiple constituents.\u00a0 The profitability story is good for some as they are incented by the bonus at the end of the year.\u00a0 The \u2018good for mankind\u2019 story will hit a portion of the audience, and we need a game plan to keep that card out in front on a regular basis.\u00a0 And then there is the good \u2018corporate citizen\u2019 card that continually promotes donations, good deeds, employment and more, to those that see this as the key to working for your company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not an easy game, but a necessary one.
