Everyone who goes to Anfield has a view on where to sit, which will often come from wherever they sat when they went to the ground for the first time. Mine comes from three full seasons and most of a fourth being on the Kop, as well as numerous games in the other three stands over the years. If you gave me the pick of any seat for one match, I\u2019d go for the top section of the lower tier of the Kenny Dalglish Stand, level with the halfway line.<\/p>\n

That choice has nothing to do with noise or tradition, as the choice of some other people might. It\u2019s all about seeing the match from the best possible angle. After years of watching from behind the goal, I\u2019ve come to value being able to follow the whole game from an excellent viewpoint.<\/p>\n

The Lower Kenny on the Halfway Line<\/h2>\n

From the seat on the halfway line of the lower Kenny, the pitch sits in front of you in one piece. Both penalty areas are the same distance away, so a chance at either end looks as clear as a chance at the other. You\u2019re high enough to see the shape of both teams, the gaps opening up between the lines and the full-backs pushing on, but still close enough to hear the shouts and feel how quick the game is. Sit much lower and you mostly see legs. Sit much higher and the players start to look like counters on a board.<\/p>\n

The view from there is incredible, which is a word that I don\u2019t use lightly. The stand was the Centenary Stand until the club renamed it after Sir Kenny Dalglish in 2017, its 125th anniversary year, but whatever it\u2019s called, the sightline is the reason I keep wanting to sit there when I go to the game.<\/p>\n

The Upper Kenny Dalglish & the Main Stand<\/h2>\n

I\u2019ve sat in the lower rows of the upper tier of the same stand, and it works for exactly the same reason. You\u2019re square on to the play and can read it as it unfolds, just from a little higher up. You lose a bit of the closeness, but the patterns are, if anything, easier to see.<\/p>\n

My third choice is about halfway up the lower tier of the Main Stand, again on the halfway line. That stand was rebuilt and reopened in the September of 2016, with roughly 8,500 extra seats, and the view across to the Kenny Dalglish Stand is a solid one.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d keep to the lower tier, though, personally. I\u2019ve been higher up in the Main Stand and it left me feeling a bit dizzy, which isn\u2019t how I want to spend 90 minutes. The lower tier gives me the same side-on view with my feet feeling much nearer the ground.<\/p>\n

Block 305 on the Kop<\/h2>\n

I had access to a season ticket on the Kop in block 305, row 60, from the 2016-2017 season until Covid emptied grounds in the March of 2020. The Kop is where the atmosphere comes from in the big games, whilst sitting amongst the same faces every home game gave me a camaraderie that you don\u2019t get when you\u2019re dipping in and out of different parts of the ground.<\/p>\n

The trouble is the angle. From behind the goal at the Kop end, it\u2019s hard to judge what\u2019s happening down at the Anfield Road end. Distances flatten out, you can\u2019t always tell whether a shot is going in or wide until the net moves, and half the time you work out what happened from the reaction of the crowd at the other end.<\/p>\n

Of course, anyone in the Anfield Road End has exactly the same problem, just in reverse. Behind a goal, you watch half a match up close and the other half from a distance. The Kop gets the atmosphere, the Annie Road End allows you to engage in some banter with the away fans, so it\u2019s a matter of what it is that you like.<\/p>\n

When There\u2019s a Goal Your End, Nothing Beats It<\/h2>\n

When the action does come to your end, there\u2019s no better place to be. On the 14th of April 2019, against Chelsea, Mo Salah picked the ball up on the right, cut inside and hit it from about 25 yards into the top corner<\/a> at the Kop end. I was in the Kop that day, with the ball coming so hard and so straight at me that I honestly felt as though it would\u2019ve hit me in the face if the net hadn\u2019t stopped it. It made it 2-0 and put us back on top of the table.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been lucky enough to see a great goal scored in front of me at the other end too. On the third of October 2021, Salah took a pass from Curtis Jones out on the right, danced past three Manchester City defenders and finished from a tight angle at the Anfield Road End. I was right in front of him, meaning I had a front-row seat for a goal that went on to win the Premier League\u2019s Goal of the Season<\/a> award, which will stick with me forever.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d Still Pick the Halfway Line<\/h2>\n

Those two goals show you what a seat behind the goal can give you, provided the moment happens at your end of the pitch. Even so, the halfway line gives you something else entirely, which is why I\u2019d still pick it if given free range of the entirety of Anfield. You see every goal at either end as well as the build-up, the pressing and the mistakes that lead to it.<\/p>\n

So if I\u2019m choosing, I\u2019m going back to the lower Kenny Dalglish, near the back, right on the halfway line. The Kop gave me the best atmosphere I\u2019ve known at Anfield.
