Start your Independent Membership today.<\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"\/subscribe?regSourceMethod=Bookmarks\" class=\"subscribe-link\" target=\"_parent\">Join today<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"login-copy\">\n      Already a member?<br \/>\n      <a href=\"#\" class=\"login-link login-trigger\" external-event=\"openLogin\">Log in<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Treasury <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/scott-bessent-trump-checks-debt-b3050734.html\">Secretary Scott Bessent<\/a> reportedly spat in his food in a rage after being confronted by protesters at a Washington, D.C., restaurant at the end of last year.<\/p>\n<p>The alarming new detail was one of many revelations in a<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/bessent-treasury-tension-turnover-unmet-economic-goals-b552be0a?mod=hp_lead_pos1\"> <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em><\/a>account of Bessent\u2019s conduct over the last 20 months at the helm of the Treasury, where he reportedly regularly yells at staffers and is known for losing his temper. <\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump has told advisers that he likes<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/musk-bessent-fight-details-trump-irs-b2738301.html\"> Bessent\u2019s \u201cfeisty public persona,\u201d<\/a> according to the <em>Journal. <\/em>The report comes amid growing skepticism about the Trump administration\u2019s handling of the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/republicans-trump-maga-campaign-spending-b3062525.html\"> economy ahead of the midterm elections.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bessent was dining at a Brazilian-Italian restaurant in D.C. last December when he was confronted by activists from Code Pink who were protesting economic sanctions. They accused Bessent of \u201coversee[ing] the deaths of 600,000 people due to sanctions annually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the public shaming, the Treasury chief blew up at the restaurant owner for not removing the activists, and spat in his food before he stormed out, according to the <em>Journal<\/em>, citing the owner and a nearby diner.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-awdjp1-2 cbpRGD sc-awdjp1-3 image align-center\">\n<figure class=\"sc-1cbdeug-0 cXcwgU\">\n<div data-gallery-length=\"2\" class=\"sc-awdjp1-0 ebwijG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/07\/28\/17\/2284344621..\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/07\/28\/17\/2284344621..?quality=75&amp;width=320&amp;auto=webp 320w, https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/07\/28\/17\/2284344621..?quality=75&amp;width=640&amp;auto=webp 640w\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Revelations have emerged about the conduct of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, including one incident when he reportedly spat in his food in a rage at a restaurant after protesters interrupted his dinner\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"sc-1cbdeug-1 sc-1cbdeug-3 YlsWU hgzWpY\">Revelations have emerged about the conduct of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, including one incident when he reportedly spat in his food in a rage at a restaurant after protesters interrupted his dinner<span class=\"sc-1cbdeug-7 gjqsiM\"> <!-- -->(<!-- -->AFP\/Getty<!-- -->)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Bessent\u2019s tough management style has led to staffers reportedly trading advice on how to handle the secretary\u2019s mood before they meet with him, while others described feeling relieved when he was not in the office. <\/p>\n<p>Some told the outlet that Bessent\u2019s behavior \u201cwas a factor in the departure of multiple key officials\u201d during his tenure.<\/p>\n<p>When Bessent was asked by Trump to investigate <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/scott-bessent-donald-trump-treasury-minnesota-washington-b2883595.html\">alleged fraud in Minnesota\u2019s Somali community, <\/a>he reprimanded &#8211; John Hurley, the former undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, in front of staffers for \u201cdragging his feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bessent reportedly yelled profanities at Hurley, and was so loud that staffers working nearby overheard. Hurley left the Treasury in February. In a statement to the <em>Journal<\/em>, Hurley praised Bessent as \u201ca brilliant and fearless warrior for President Trump and the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another incident last year, Bessent picked up a binder full of papers and hurled it at a wall after he became angry about the way his daily briefing book was organized, according to the <em>Journal<\/em>. Bessent denied the incident to the outlet. <\/p>\n<p>A Treasury spokesperson did not directly address the reports of Bessent\u2019s temper when reached for comment, but said the secretary \u201capproaches the job with a deep sense of responsibility and urgency\u201d after working in \u201csome of the most demanding roles in global finance.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has high expectations of the United States Treasury\u2019s performance because the American people deserve the best outcomes,\u201d the spokesperson told <em>The Independent.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-awdjp1-2 cbpRGD sc-awdjp1-3 image align-center\">\n<figure class=\"sc-1cbdeug-0 cXcwgU\">\n<div data-gallery-length=\"2\" class=\"sc-awdjp1-0 bLzGcw\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/09\/03\/21\/2250795897..\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/09\/03\/21\/2250795897..?quality=75&amp;width=320&amp;auto=webp 320w, https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2026\/09\/03\/21\/2250795897..?quality=75&amp;width=640&amp;auto=webp 640w\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"President Donald Trump reportedly told advisers that he likes Bessent\u2019s \u2018feisty public persona,\u2019 according to the Journal\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"sc-1cbdeug-1 sc-1cbdeug-3 YlsWU hgzWpY\">President Donald Trump reportedly told advisers that he likes Bessent\u2019s \u2018feisty public persona,\u2019 according to the Journal<span class=\"sc-1cbdeug-7 gjqsiM\"> <!-- -->(<!-- -->Getty<!-- -->)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The White House also defended Bessent in a statement to the newspaper, and touted \u201cthe level of professionalism and accountability\u201d he has brought to the Treasury as \u201cone of the great accomplishments of this administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports of Bessent\u2019s hot temper first emerged early in Trump\u2019s second term, when he <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/musk-bessent-fight-details-trump-irs-b2738301.html\">had a physical altercation with Elon Musk. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bessent and the world\u2019s richest man, who for six months oversaw the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, got into what observers described as a professional wrestling-style shouting match over who would be placed in charge of the Internal Revenue Service.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he has confronted Bill Pulte at a private dinner in 2025, reportedly \u201cphysically threatening\u201d him, and clashed with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at an event last year, according to the <em>Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Bessent \u201cenjoys cultivating a tough-guy image,\u201d former Treasury officials told the newspaper, and has found reports of the altercations \u201chumorous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MAGA stalwart Steve Bannon, Trump\u2019s former White House chief adviser, described Bessent as a \u201cgood person\u201d but warned, \u201che\u2019s got a tripwire and he\u2019s got a temper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the report, the Treasury spokesperson also touted several policies ushered in under Bessent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe championed the Working Families Tax Cuts and is overseeing their implementation, directed the search for a new Federal Reserve chairman,\u201d the spokesperson began. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelivered the most successful tax filing season in American history while improving IRS efficiency, launched Trump Accounts, enacted sweeping bank regulatory reform, leads the China economic relationship, designed Operation Economic Outcast to cut off Iran from the international financial system, and helped to secure more than a dozen major economic agreements that expand U.S. market access and advance strategic investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later?
