Late last month I got several emails from Spotify, all pretty much the same:<\/p>\n

Klickitcast<\/a> was a podcast by John McCoy and Phil Gonzales that covered every book by Beverly Cleary. Episodes were usually an hour long, and generally started with the hosts reading the first paragraph about the book to kick off their discussion.<\/p>\n

I measured a few of them. An hour or more of critical content, and maybe 30 or 45 seconds of quoting from the work being discussed. This is the very definition of \u201cfair use<\/a>,\u201d in which excerpts from works may be used specifically for the purpose of making editorial points about those works.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s very obvious what happened. Not being satisfied by its endless patrolling of podcast episodes for music that appears in Spotify\u2019s own music libraries, the company had moved on to either:<\/p>\n
