{"id":7078809,"date":"2026-10-07T02:29:20","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T02:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7078809"},"modified":"2026-10-07T02:29:20","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T02:29:20","slug":"federal-board-releases-records-on-rogers-hamiltons-1957-murder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7078809","title":{"rendered":"Federal board releases records on Rogers Hamilton\u2019s 1957 murder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This past week, a federal board released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coldcaserecords.gov\/content\/cases\/1957-10-22-rogers-hamilton\/\">records<\/a> on the 1957 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/04\/02\/rogers-hamilton-no-justice-for-murdered-black-teen\/\">murder of Rogers Hamilton<\/a>, revealing that the U.S. Department of Justice chose to close the case rather than follow up on allegations of possible law enforcement involvement.<\/p>\n<p>Two white men kidnapped the Black teen from his home west of Hayneville late on October 22, 1957. Hamilton\u2019s mother, Beatrice Hamilton, arrived at the scene just as the two men shot her son in the head. Law enforcement never arrested or charged anyone in connection with Hamilton\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of these cases aren\u2019t whodunits. In most of them, the perpetrator was known,\u201d Alabama native Hank Klibanoff said. Klibanoff is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coldcaserecords.gov\/\">Civil Rights Cold Case Records Review Board<\/a> and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/coldcases.emory.edu\/\">Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project<\/a> at Emory University. \u201cBut these records help us better understand not just the details of the incident, but the environment around it\u2014and how the system was set up to keep perpetrators from being held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trove of newly released documents followed the board\u2019s release of records in 54 cases since 2024. A third of the case records released to date are from Alabama, by far the highest number of cases from any single state.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_224687\" style=\"width: 754px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-224687\" class=\"size-full wp-image-224687\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alreporter.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2-Alabama-Bureau-of-Investigation-1957-inquiry.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alreporter.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2-Alabama-Bureau-of-Investigation-1957-inquiry.png 744w, https:\/\/media.alreporter.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2-Alabama-Bureau-of-Investigation-1957-inquiry-300x174.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 744px) 100vw, 744px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-224687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alabama Bureau of Investigation\u2019s 1957 inquiry<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Alabama Bureau of Investigation inquiry<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cLocal law enforcement\u2019s investigations into these crimes were often perfunctory, at best,\u201d Klibanoff said. \u201cWhat the records reveal, especially in the South, are officials protecting the status quo\u2014a status quo that ensured Black residents were treated as second-class citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newly released files included the Alabama Bureau of Investigation\u2019s original 1957 inquiry detailing state investigator Oscar Corley\u2019s probe into Hamilton\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>The documents indicated that Corley contacted Lowndes County Deputy Sheriff Joe Jackson, the brother of one of the two white men allegedly involved. Jackson\u2019s involvement in the state\u2019s investigation likely dissuaded Hamilton\u2019s mother from identifying the men she saw kill her son to investigators. As a result, Corley\u2019s efforts didn\u2019t identify anyone involved in the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>After two days, Corley turned the inquiry back over to the Lowndes County sheriff, who took no further action on the case.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_224688\" style=\"width: 761px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-224688\" class=\"size-full wp-image-224688\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alreporter.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3-FBI-1957-file-on-Rogers-Hamilton-case.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"751\" height=\"493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alreporter.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3-FBI-1957-file-on-Rogers-Hamilton-case.png 751w, https:\/\/media.alreporter.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/3-FBI-1957-file-on-Rogers-Hamilton-case-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-224688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FBI\u2019s 1957 file on the Rogers Hamilton case<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>FBI\u2019s preliminary investigation<\/h2>\n<p>The documents also revealed that FBI special agents Spencer H. Robb and John C. McCluney opened a preliminary federal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI received tips in November 1957 suggesting the possible involvement of Thomas Coleman, an alleged Klansman and part-time deputy sheriff. It also received an anonymous letter addressed to FBI Director Hoover claiming that the Lowndes County sheriff and his deputies were responsible for Hamilton\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>The documents contained no evidence that the FBI followed up on any of these leads in 1957 and indicated that FBI agents did not interview anyone who had witnessed the murder, such as Hamilton\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, FBI agents interviewed only three people, including Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Varner of the Middle District of Alabama. Varner urged the FBI to close the investigation, asserting that law enforcement officers were not involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe indications are that the victim was killed by private individuals and that no officer was involved,\u201d Maceo W. Fleming, formerly of The Anniston Star and founder of the Civil Rights Cold Case Project, reported extensively on Hamilton\u2019s death. His groundbreaking reporting resulted in James Bonard Fowler\u2019s 2010 guilty plea in the 1965 murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson. \u201cThe public and especially his family deserve to know everything. The U.S. House of Representatives is considering it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Board\u2019s tenure is renewed past next January, we expect to release records in hundreds more cases,\u201d Klibanoff said. \u201cThere are countless families still waiting for answers.
