It is when the whole town becomes one and celebrate the feast of<br \/>\nSta. Peter whom folks lovingly call Apo<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Iro. Actually, the people get busy as early as May when the fiesta<br \/>\ncommittee members start mounting the bamboo poles for the buntings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">That the Apalite\u00f1os put their minds and hearts in the<br \/>\nfiesta event is eveident in the buntings alone. The colors are well-chosen, the<br \/>\nhangings have identical shapes and sizes.Arranged very close to each other, the<br \/>\nbuntings would look like one bg canopy. It is as if<br \/>\ntime hangs suspended for three days and everyone is reborn. Nothing occupies<br \/>\nthe people\u2019s attention except to give their best to Apo Iro. The life-size<br \/>\nimage in pure ivory is 287 years old. It is the only on in the country which<br \/>\nsits on a throne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Most of us are familiar with St. Peter in an upright<br \/>\nposition holding a rooster and keys. But Apo Iro of Apalit is a magnificent<br \/>\nPrince of the Church in papal robes. Fr his feats, he wear a three-tiered crown<br \/>\nsymbolic of his being a first Pope. He has a scepter, a huge cross around his<br \/>\nneck, a ruby ring and keys. Don Pedro got the image done in<br \/>\nSpain including its original crown, scepter, ring , keys, necklace , cross, the<br \/>\nfisherman\u2019s shoes in pure slver. All those have remained intact since Apo Iro\u2019s<br \/>\narrival in 844 at the old home of Don Pedro in Alauli, Apalit. The old lady died in May this<br \/>\nyear which made her daughter Erlinda, the new <i>camarera.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">The family has undertaken the awesome task of being host<br \/>\nto Apo Iro\u2019s numerous visitors throughout the year. But it is on his feast day<br \/>\nwhen the preparations are even bigger. Linda, a well-known dentist, is not<br \/>\ndaunted by the responsibilities for she has fund the perfect partner<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>in Rick. The latter is a busy executive of<br \/>\nEquitable Bank and has accepted Apo Iro graciously as part of his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">The very old Spanish home of Rick and Linda opens its<br \/>\ndoors to everybody ob Apo Iro feast day. Rick reveal as , \u201cwe have to hire no<br \/>\nless than 40 cooks to feed the devotees for free.\u201d About 10 to 20 cavans of<br \/>\nrice are needed each year, four large pigs, 300 peces of chicken, 40 kilos of<br \/>\nbeef, and a jeepload of <i>bihon<\/i> and not less that 30 cases of softdrink<br \/>\nare consumed. \u201cOf course, there are other ingredients and other items butthose<br \/>\nare the staples. Then there\u2019s the maintenance of the<br \/>\nchapel and the garden built in 1981 which come from the Badenhop\u2019s purse. \u201cWe<br \/>\nwill keep the tradition the way Linda\u2019s parents and ancestors did it. You<br \/>\ncannot just close the shrine for lack of fnds. We believe that Apo Iro will<br \/>\nhelp in every way,\u201d says Rick without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">The Badenhop\u2019s faith in the miraculous power and<br \/>\ngenerosity of Apo Iro is echoed by the devotees who flock by the thousands.<br \/>\nMaria Santos, a 68 year old resident of Caloocan, and her whole clan come<br \/>\nyearly in 4 jeepneys. The woman explains, <i>\u201cDati hindi ako makalakad dahil sa<br \/>\nrayuma sa pareho kong paa. Pero simula nang magdebosyon ako kay Apo Iro,<br \/>\ngumaling na ako.\u201d<\/i> In between fiestas, Alig Maria usues coconut oil to<br \/>\nmassage her feet. <i>\u201cMabilis ang ginhawa. Ganon din kapag nagbabad ka sa ilog<br \/>\nna dinadaanan ni Apo,<\/i>\u201d came the simple declaration of faith. Her two grandchildren<br \/>\nwere rid of their asthma again through the water and oil from Apo Iro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">There\u2019s Felisa Cabildo Albina who is now 73 years old and<br \/>\nwidowed. She began her <i>panata<\/i> at 17. Aling Feling\u2019s eyesight was failing<br \/>\nbecause of cataract, <i>\u201cpero iniligtas ako ni Apo Iro.\u201d<\/i> She used to suffer<br \/>\nfrom hypertension and severe headaches. But she does not look her age nor does<br \/>\nher illness seem to bother her when she dances on the street with other<br \/>\ndevotees. Rick points out, \u201cThey can get<br \/>\nthe leaves but nothing should be uprooted. We spend a lot in the upkeep of the<br \/>\nplants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><b><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Miracles?\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/b>Another devotee of<br \/>\nApo Iro is 14-year old Nicomedes Estrella of Iba. He was only 4 years old when<br \/>\nhe got leukemia and his parents were told that he would die soon. Once, when he<br \/>\nwas delirious, he told his father, <i>\u201cItay, dalhin mo ako kay Apo Iro.\u201d<\/i> He<br \/>\nand his parents stayed in the chapel for two weeks after which Nick recovered<br \/>\nfor good. He is now a healthy teener who for the last 10 years has been<br \/>\nspending the last 3 days of June with Apo Iro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">Aling Maria, Aling Feling and Nick are only three of the<br \/>\ntousads of devotees who greet Apo Iro on his feast. They wait rain or shine<br \/>\ntill Apo is brought out from the chapel and down into the river. The chanting<br \/>\nof <i>\u201cApo Iro, Apo Iro<\/i>!\u201d is awesome, the kind that makes your hair stand<br \/>\non its end and sends shivers down your spine. There is a marvelous rain of<br \/>\npetals, confetti and leaves followed by a thunderous applause. More people await Ao Iro at<br \/>\nthe river where he takes a barge. From Capalangan, he is transferred to a<br \/>\nbigger, more splendid float at the point where the Calumpit and Pampanga Rivers<br \/>\nmeetfor his 6-hour journey to the Apalit poblaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">The fluvial procession is a sight to behold, a powerful<br \/>\nfeast of colors for photographers. The large float carrying Apo Iro and and the<br \/>\nBlessed Mother is followed by smaller bancas, barges, etc. all filled with<br \/>\npeople.
