From intimate reflections on youth and the passage of time to poems shaped by place, memory, and the natural world, the 2026 entries demonstrated the remarkable range and vitality of contemporary poetry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s BREW Poetry Award recognises poetry in two categories\u2014Open and Tertiary\u2014and presents both Judges\u2019 Pick and Community\u2019s Pick titles. There are no winners or finalists for the Primary and Secondary School categories in this award round. The Judges\u2019 Pick recognises poems selected through the award\u2019s judging process, while the Community\u2019s Pick reflects the response of readers through views and comments.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Judges_Poem_and_Poet_of_the_Year\"\/>The Judges\u2019 Poem and Poet of the Year<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-the-chrysalis-brew-project wp-block-embed-the-chrysalis-brew-project\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Judges_Poem_and_Poet_of_the_Year-2\"\/>The Judges\u2019 Poem and Poet of the Year<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%F0%9F%8F%86_%E2%80%9CYouth%E2%80%9D_by_Bianca_Black\"\/>\ud83c\udfc6 \u201cYouth\u201d by Bianca Black<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chrysalis BREW Project is delighted to announce <strong>\u201cYouth\u201d by Bianca Black<\/strong> as the <strong>BREW Poetry Award 2026 Judges\u2019 Poem of the Year<\/strong>, making Bianca Black the <strong>2026 Judges\u2019 Poet of the Year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selected from this year\u2019s Judges\u2019 Pick entries, <em>Youth<\/em> distinguished itself through the strength and integration of its poetic qualities. The judges\u2019 decision considered the poem against the full range of BREW Poetry Award criteria, including creativity and originality, emotional impact, technical proficiency, depth and complexity, unity and coherence, language and imagery, resonance and relevance, voice and style, innovation and experimentation, and overall impact and memorability.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_%E2%80%9CYouth%E2%80%9D_was_selected\"\/>Why \u201cYouth\u201d was selected<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Creativity and Originality<\/strong><br \/><em>Youth<\/em> approaches the experience of youth through a distinctive combination of imagery, atmosphere, movement, and reflection. Rather than presenting youth simply as an abstract idea, the poem gives it a tangible, sensory presence, allowing the reader to encounter it through moments, places, bodies, light, and the natural world. Its imaginative treatment gives the familiar theme a fresh poetic identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Emotional Impact<\/strong><br \/>The poem carries an emotional quality that emerges organically from its images and observations. There is a sense of freedom, vitality, intimacy, and fleetingness within the work, creating an awareness that moments of youth are simultaneously lived in the present and transformed into memory.
