Sassy dragons and their riders

When and what is Threshing Day? Well, it’s the 1st October and it’s the day a cadet bonds with a dragon and becomes a rider. If that sentence means nothing to you, I would suggest you go back and read the previous 3 books, as this book very much needs the context of those.

Threshing Day gives us the moment 13 (much loved!) characters bond with their dragons, all told from their unique POVs. The stories are in chronological order, with the older characters going first, finishing with the newest year of cadets at Basgaith.

I can honestly say I loved every story, they were far more varied and packed full of emotional depth than I was expecting. One or two even made me cry! Of course, we all wanted the epic story of Xaden and Sgaeyl meeting for the first time, and it didn’t disappoint.

I really enjoyed the crossover in the stories of characters going through threshing in the same year and there was a lot of extra details revealed about character motivations, the overall story and, more importantly, the dragons. They are clearly plotting something!

My dream is to get a whole dragon (yes, mainly Sgaeyl) POV book and Threshing Day is the closest we’ve got to that so far. So I’ll take it.

Glad to be proved wrong

I will admit that when Threshing Day was announced, it did feel like a quick money-maker to cash in on the huge fandom. I dutifully read it anyway and have to say, I’ll happily eat my words. I love it. Could easily have read 30 more POV stories. Violet’s mum or Jack Barlowe would have been great to read, for example.

The physical book is a highlight too. From the glittering silver sprayed edges to the illustrations of the dragons throughout, (representing Colonel Kaori’s cards that he uses to teach the cadets about dragons) I was just blown away.

Loved the extra illustrations of Tairn and Andarna even though they don’t feature in the book (as we’ve already had their threshing story in the main series). They are so wonderfully imagined.

It was also very refreshing to read a book in this genre that wasn’t 3,000 pages long. Interestingly, I saw that the audiobook was called Threshing Day (Wing and Claw Collection) which definitely implies more of this shorter series is coming… and I can’t wait.
