I was young. And people made sure I knew it. Opinions I offered were overlooked. Perspectives I brought were discounted before they were fully considered. The assumption was clear, even when it was unspoken: you have not been around long enough for what you think to carry much weight. Age was the credential I did not have, and no amount of preparation or ability seemed to fully compensate for it.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward a few years. My son now takes great pleasure in reminding me of just how old I am. And when I look at the younger people around me, moving with the energy and agility I used to take for granted, I cannot honestly argue with him. The person who was once too young to be taken seriously is now well aware that the calendar has been moving.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out age works against you from both directions. Paul writes to Timothy with an instruction that speaks to exactly that tension. Let no man despise thy youth. Timothy was a young leader entrusted with significant responsibility in the early church, leading older believers, navigating complex situations, carrying authority that some around him likely questioned because of how many years he had or had not lived. The resistance was real. The dismissal was real.<\/p>\n<p>But Paul\u2019s response is not to argue the case for youth. It is to live the case. Be thou an example. In word. In conversation. In charity. In spirit. In faith. In purity. The instruction covers the whole of a life, not just the public moments but the private ones, not just what is said but how it is said, not just the visible faith but the character underneath it. Paul is telling Timothy that the answer to being underestimated because of age is not a better argument. It is a better life. Be so clearly an example of what a believer looks like that the age conversation simply runs out of material.<\/p>\n<p>That instruction works in both directions. The person who feels too young to be taken seriously and the person who feels too old to still matter are facing the same lie from opposite ends. The lie says your season of life determines your value and your usefulness. That too few years means too little credibility. That too many years means too little relevance. That God\u2019s work in and through a life has an age requirement that you either have not reached yet or have already passed.<\/p>\n<p>Scripture does not support that conclusion. Not once. Moses was eighty years old when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt. Jeremiah was told he was known and set apart before he was born. Mary was a teenager when she was entrusted with the most significant assignment in human history. Anna was eighty-four years old when she recognized the Messiah and became one of the first to proclaim Him. God has never once looked at the age of a person and decided they were outside the range of usefulness.<\/p>\n<p>The answer to being despised for your season is the same regardless of which end you are on. Live the example. Be the kind of person in word, in spirit, in faith, and in character that makes the age argument irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>My son can remind me of my age all he wants. And the younger generation can move faster than I do. But the God who called me has not checked the calendar. He called me for this season. And He called you for yours.<\/p>\n<p>You are not too young. You are not too old. You are exactly the age God needs you to be right now. God has never once been limited by someone\u2019s age when He had a purpose for them. Your season is not a disqualifier.
