But we don\u2019t always know what makes them good. It has, of course, a lot to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2023\/03\/12\/kindness\/\">kindness<\/a>. It has to do with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2023\/11\/07\/may-sarton-on-generosity\/\">capacity to give<\/a>, and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2022\/11\/21\/john-steinbeck-sea-of-cortez-receiving\/\">to receive<\/a>. It has to do with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2023\/04\/09\/george-saunders-uncertainty\/\">courage of uncertainty<\/a>. And yet like all the great truths, the essence of a person, the goodness of a person, is both clear and ineffable. <\/p>\n<p>In the bleak Siberian winter of 1856, <a href=\"https:\/\/themarginalian.org\/tag\/fyodor-dostoyevsky\">Fyodor Dostoyevsky<\/a> (November 11, 1821\u2013February 9, 1881) \u2014 thirty-five, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2024\/09\/01\/dostyevsky-general-letter\/\">dreaming of being a writer while stationed at a labor camp<\/a>, having narrowly escaped a death sentence that had given him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2019\/12\/05\/dostoyevsky-execution-life\/\">a lucid glimpse of the meaning of life<\/a> \u2014 sent his older brother a letter of introduction to a young friend whose goodness had touched his life, had changed it. \u201cIn the most selfless way he has undertaken to look after my concerns and help me with all his might,\u201d Dostoyevsky tells his brother, \u201cand he loves me.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Complete-Letters-1832-Fyodor-Dostoevsky\/dp\/0882338978\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themarginalian.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/dostoyevsky1.jpg?w=680&amp;ssl=1\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portrait of Fyodor Dostoyevsky by Vasily Perov, 1871<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Throughout the ten-page letter, he goes on to enumerate his friend\u2019s noble qualities. Pulsating beneath the particular is a simple, precise articulation of what makes a good person in a universal sense. (In one of the most logically elegant and morally compelling arguments for humanity, Dostoyevsky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2014\/12\/02\/dostoyevsky-good-fellows\/\">believed there are no bad people<\/a> \u2014 which is precisely what renders his concern with goodness all the more commanding.) <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a very young, very gentle person,\u201d he writes, \u201cbut with a strongly developed point of honor, incredibly kind.\u201d In describing his friend\u2019s modest education and intellectual disposition, he makes a subtle, profound point \u2014 it is far better to enjoy studying than to be overeducated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live in great poverty,\u201d Dostoyevsky tells his brother, \u201cdeny myself everything, and in the meantime I\u2019ve made debts!\u201d Perennially penurious, he was constantly asking friends, relatives, acquaintances, and even near-strangers for loans, which he rarely repaid. His young friend frequently helped him financially and not once asked for the money back, implicitly understanding that money is not a special species of resource, but \u2014 like time, like love \u2014 just another form of energy that circulates between us, flowing toward where it is most needed. \u201cHe blushes when I start up about my debt,\u201d Dostoyevsky writes, \u201cand is even annoyed if I remind him of it\u201d \u2014 a beautiful testament to the non-transactional nature of true generosity. <\/p>\n<p>In a passage that calls to mind D.H. Lawrence\u2019s timeless insight into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2026\/10\/03\/d-h-lawrence-brute-force\/\">the strength of the sensitive<\/a>, Dostoyevsky arrives at the young man\u2019s noblest quality. Observing that he is \u201cprone to depression and rather over-anxious,\u201d he reflects on the superpower of his friend\u2019s vulnerability \u2014 one all the more needed in our Age of Outrage:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>What infuriates and enrages someone else saddens him \u2014 the sign of a superior heart.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Couple with Susan Sontag on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2015\/03\/30\/susan-sontag-writing-storytelling-at-the-same-time\/\">what it means to be a good human being<\/a>, then revisit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2014\/11\/11\/dostoyevsky-dream\/\">the day Dostoyevsky discovered the meaning of life in a dream<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We know good people when we encounter them, when they fall upon our lives like a sunbeam, like a song.
