American entertainment is moving further from stories built around traditional family life, faith, male responsibility, and national identity. Many studios and publishers now place feminist, racial, and LGBT themes at the center of major franchises.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The shift isn\u2019t limited to small projects or niche programming. HBO\u2019s Lanterns<\/i>, part of DC Studios\u2019 new screen universe, has made race a major part of its John Stewart storyline. The series places Stewart, a Black Green Lantern, beside Hal Jordan, an older white Green Lantern, while exploring racial expectations, perceived injustice, family pressure, and generational trauma.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Episode three, \u201cOutKast,\u201d focuses on the idea that Stewart\u2019s parents urged him toward becoming a Green Lantern because Black Americans are often expected to overcome barriers through exceptional achievement. Race can be part of a character\u2019s background without taking over the story. Critics, however, have argued that Lanterns<\/i> moves away from space adventure, courage, and partnership to frame its heroes through on the nose racial conflicts, where the showrunners and writers are making Hal Jordan \u201clow key racist\u201d in order to elevate John Stewart.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

DC has also made sexuality a key part of several established characters, and they\u2019ve been doing it for years, including the Golden Age Green Lantern. And it\u2019s not just the adult male heroes. Batwoman, Kate Kane, was reintroduced by DC in 2006 as a Jewish lesbian and later led the CW series Batwoman<\/i>. The network promoted the character as the first lesbian superhero to headline a DC television title.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Clark Kent and Lois Lane\u2019s son, Jon Kent, was written as bisexual in Superman: Son of Kal-El<\/i>. His relationship with reporter Jay Nakamura became a major part of the comic\u2019s direction. These characters can exist in superhero fiction, but many fans question why publishers place identity labels ahead of adventure, conflict, sacrifice, and character growth, and the promotion of a global brand like Superman, which has worldwide readership, can\u2019t be understated when they have a guy in the Superman costume making out with a pink haired boy on the cover of the comic. What a long way from the more masculine version of the character fans had known for decades.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This trend almost uniformly affects the treatment of straight white male characters. They\u2019re often written as corrupt executives, abusive authority figures, weak fathers, fools, or symbols of an older culture that must be rejected. Female leads are more often presented as a \u201cgirl boss,\u201d the moral center, while traditional masculine traits such as duty, authority, strength, discipline, and protection are treated with suspicion unless they are remade to fit current political standards. In fact, it\u2019s often labelled \u201ctoxic masculinity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This doesn\u2019t mean women, racial minorities, lesbians, or gay characters don\u2019t belong in popular entertainment.Of course they do. The issue is whether major studios still believe audiences want stories rooted in universal human conflict rather than lessons about approved identities and disfavored ones.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A superhero story shouldn\u2019t need to demean fathers, straight men, traditional families, or American ideals to elevate other characters. When identity politics becomes more important than story, established heroes become tools for messaging. That\u2019s where feminization, wokeness, DEI, and corporate ESG thinking have turned entertainment into a lecture, and slowly into a product audiences stop buying.<\/p>\n
