SACRAMENTO\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span> Look, Xavier Becerra could cruise to a South Pacific island and bask on the beach until election day and Californians would still choose him as their next governor.<\/p>\n

So, last week\u2019s televised CNN debate between Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton<\/a> really had no election significance, although it was important for the Democratic frontrunner in other ways.<\/p>\n

Who won the debate?<\/a> Becerra, because he came across as calm, collected and capable of governing this troubled state \u2014 certainly very few voters\u2019 ideal candidate, but the only real choice for most Californians.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s simply no way Becerra can lose on Nov. 3 <\/a>because his only opponent is a Republican. Californians will not elect a Republican governor in this polarized era, particularly one endorsed by the reviled President Trump.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Moreover, Hilton\u2019s only previous political experience was as an advisor to a British prime minister <\/a>and his sole claim to U.S. notoriety was as a Fox News TV host\u2013not exactly resume boosters in California.<\/p>\n

Becerra \u2014 with public office experience spanning more than three decades \u2014 held a growing 25-point lead in a recent poll by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies.<\/a> <\/p>\n

He\u2019s a shoo-in simply because he has a \u201cD\u201d beside his name in this state where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2-to-1 and despise the GOP president.<\/p>\n

Californians haven\u2019t elected a Republican to statewide office in 20 years \u2014 and that\u2019s Hilton\u2019s main pitch to voters.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result,\u201d the GOP candidate asserted during the debate,<\/a> as he does several times a day.<\/p>\n

Turning to Becerra, Hilton said:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re the candidate who is supported by the machine in Sacramento \u2014 the unions, big business, all these people that for 16 years have given us the highest cost of living in the country, made it impossible to build anything, given us the highest unemployment rate, the highest poverty rate\u2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s why we\u2019ve got to try something different this time instead of voting for more of the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

OK, fair point. But try what exactly? That\u2019s where Hilton stalls or veers erratically.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d build \u201c10 new cities.\u201d Build them where exactly? He doesn\u2019t say.<\/p>\n

He definitely doesn\u2019t want to construct new apartment buildings in the suburbs \u201cwhen we have got so much space that we could be building on in California.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like out in Southern California deserts or Central Valley farm fields \u2014 requiring two-hour commutes to urban jobs?<\/p>\n

And where does the water come from for these 10 new cities as the West scrambles for what\u2019s left of diminishing supplies? But unfortunately there was no discussion of that during the debate.<\/p>\n

One debate exchange that caught my attention was about vaccines. Hilton seemed to be carrying the torch for whacko anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Becerra\u2019s successor as U.S. health secretary in the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Debate co-moderator Dana Bash recalled what Hilton said previously about children\u2019s vaccinations: \u201cThe government should have nothing to do with these fundamental and vital decisions.\u201d And she asked whether he\u2019d push to eliminate California\u2019s vaccine requirements.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Hilton replied. \u201cI\u2019m pro vaccine.\u201d But then he seemed to wander all over the stage looking to have it both ways.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a \u201cvery, very emotional issue for a lot of parents,\u201d he said, adding there\u2019s \u201cdata around the world\u201d showing that where vaccine \u201cmandates are lower\u2026 you actually have higher [vaccination] compliance, where parents don\u2019t feel that they\u2019re being bullied into doing something that they don\u2019t want to do. And that\u2019s what I want to see here.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he ultimately said,\u201cI\u2019d follow the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

In California, the law requires all children without medical exemptions to be vaccinated for several diseases \u2014 including polio, measles, mumps, chickenpox, hepatitis B and whooping cough \u2014 before they\u2019re admitted to school.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a blessing. When I grew up, practically every kid at some point was bedridden with one or more of those dangerous ailments. Then some saviors invented vaccines.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had nearly eradicated measles,\u201d Becerra said, responding to Hilton. \u201cWhen I left HHS, you rarely heard of a case of measles\u2026. Today, children are dying of measles. Today, the spread of measles has reached a proportion we haven\u2019t seen since the 1960s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what happens when vaccine deniers take over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Becerra achieved all he needed to in the debate. He didn\u2019t screw up. He kept cool and actually was fairly quick on his feet in replying to Hilton\u2019s attacks, while planting a MAGA hat firmly on the Republican\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

He missed an opportunity to accomplish more, however \u2014 like making Californians feel really good about voting for him, rather than merely because he\u2019s the only Democrat left standing in the contest to replace the termed out Gov. Gavin Newsom.<\/p>\n

Voters might like to hear what Becerra\u2019s vision is \u2014 if he has one \u2014 for the California he wants to build.<\/p>\n

What does he have in mind besides just defending California against Trump? That\u2019s a given. How\u2019s he going to lower our living costs? Upgrade public education? Prevent wildfires? Details, not platitudes.<\/p>\n

Rather than relaxing on his lead, Becerra should be constantly moving around the state, introducing himself to Californians and \u2014 more importantly \u2014 listening to their problems and ideas. To his credit, he\u2019s doing that this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe debate was boring and uneventful, but Becerra won it,\u201d says Republican consultant Rob Stutzman. \u201cHe is perfectly vanilla and that makes it really hard to pin him down in an attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got the genuine Xavier Becerra. That\u2019s exactly who he is,\u201d says veteran Democratic strategist Garry Sragow, a longtime political ally. \u201cThoughtful, committed and very decent, but does not go very high on the charisma meter.\u201d<\/p>\n

In California right now, a candidate\u2019s charisma rates much lower than a simple \u201cD.\u201d<\/p>\n
