I want to remain anonymous because I already know people will misunderstand me when they hear this story. I never dated my boyfriend because I wanted his money, and I never expected him to pay all my bills or finance my entire life. However, I have always believed that if a man asks a woman to be his girlfriend, he should at least be in a position to make the relationship comfortable for both of them. I am not asking for luxury or an extravagant lifestyle, but I do expect effort, consistency and the ability to afford some of the basic things that come with dating.<\/p>\n

When we first met, he told me he was working hard and trying to build his career. I respected that because I also have my own goals and I understand that nobody becomes successful overnight. In the beginning, I was very patient. I did not complain when we could not go to expensive restaurants, and I was perfectly happy with simple dates as long as he put some thought into them. The problem was that, after a while, I realized I was constantly adjusting my expectations while he was making very little effort to improve his situation.<\/p>\n

There were times when I would suggest that we go somewhere together, only for him to tell me he could not afford it. I eventually started paying for things myself because I did not want every outing to turn into an argument about money. But whenever I stopped making plans, we would simply stay indoors and do nothing. Even birthdays and special occasions became difficult because he would say he was broke. I began wondering whether I was being unreasonable for wanting to experience the normal things couples do together.<\/p>\n

The conversation finally happened after I complained about how stagnant the relationship had become. He accused me of being materialistic and said that I must have chosen him because of what I thought he could give me financially. That statement really hurt me because I had supported him emotionally through some of his most difficult periods. I reminded him that I had never demanded designer bags, expensive holidays or a particular amount of money. What I wanted was a partner who could occasionally take me out, plan something special and make me feel like dating me was something he genuinely wanted to invest in.<\/p>\n

I also had to be honest with myself. Love is important to me, but I do not believe love means completely ignoring compatibility. I have ambitions for the kind of life I want to build in the future, and I know that financial stability is part of that picture. There is a difference between dating someone because of his money and wanting a partner whose financial situation and lifestyle are reasonably compatible with yours. I don\u2019t expect a man to be rich, but I also don\u2019t want to enter a relationship where I constantly have to pretend that my needs and expectations do not matter.<\/p>\n

We eventually decided to take a step back and seriously discuss what we both wanted from the relationship. I told him that I was not looking for a millionaire; I simply wanted someone who was willing and able to put effort into building a relationship with me. He told me he felt pressured because he believed I was measuring his love by what he could spend. We both realized that we had been looking at the situation from completely different perspectives. I didn\u2019t date him for his money, but I also don\u2019t think having standards automatically makes a woman materialistic. For me, the real question is whether two people can build a relationship where love, effort, expectations and financial realities can exist together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
