I read and share a lot of stories about what happens while we travel, and lately far too many of them involve behavior that leaves you wondering how people can think it is acceptable.<\/p>\n
There was the Delta passenger who found another family already sitting in the seat she had paid for<\/a>, and the man who paid extra for a window seat only to find someone else sitting there<\/a>.<\/p>\n Sometimes, though, another passenger isn\u2019t the problem. One man paid hundreds of dollars to upgrade his wife<\/a> for an eight-hour flight, received confirmation and a seat assignment, and then she arrived at the gate to discover that her premium seat was gone.<\/p>\n Then there was the passenger who had already been sitting beside his wife for around 25 minutes when his boarding pass suddenly moved him 18 rows back<\/a>. More recently, an 83-year-old man with mobility issues arrived at the gate with a first-class ticket, only to have his boarding pass flagged and his seat downgraded<\/a>.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve even shared the story of two travelers who agreed to help when an airline needed volunteers, gave up their seats for another couple, and then were told there was no record of the agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n And those are only some of the recent ones. Flight attendants themselves have been talking about the passenger behaviors they encounter flight after flight<\/a>, while viral seat disputes continue to turn something as simple as sitting in the seat on your boarding pass into an internet debate.<\/p>\n So, since it is Monday, I thought we could start the week with something different.<\/p>\n This story begins at an airport gate, where a passenger asks a simple question before boarding a Delta flight. When I turned 17 on 17 (date), I wanted a memorable anniversary. I got one \u2013 but not in the way you think (I got double medium otitis). Yes, unforgettable \u2013 but I realized I forgot to add, in my initial wish, that I want a GOOD memory \ud83d\ude00 Anyway, let\u2019s get back to the story.\u00a0<\/p>\n The passenger shared what happened in the Delta subreddit, explaining that she was flying home after a work trip and would officially turn 30 while she was somewhere around 30,000 feet in the air.<\/p>\n She said she normally wouldn\u2019t ask for an upgrade, but this seemed like a fun enough reason to try.<\/p>\n So she approached the gate and asked whether an upgrade was available.\u00a0There wasn\u2019t, and she made it clear that this wasn\u2019t the problem. She wasn\u2019t expecting special treatment because it was her birthday, and she wasn\u2019t angry that the airline couldn\u2019t move her to a better seat.<\/p>\n Instead, something one of the gate agents reportedly said during the exchange stayed with her.<\/p>\n According to the passenger, the agent remarked that she looked older than 30.<\/p>\n It might have been intended as a joke. For the person hearing it, though, it didn\u2019t feel very funny.\u00a0She explained that she was already insecure about looking older than her age, and she returned to the seating area feeling embarrassed.<\/p>\n She probably thought that was the end of it.<\/p>\n Someone else had heard the conversation.<\/p>\n When boarding began, another woman approached her and asked whether the gate agents had found her an upgrade.<\/p>\n The birthday passenger told her they hadn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n And then this complete stranger offered her something she had absolutely no obligation to give away: her own Delta Comfort+ seat.\u00a0She would take the other woman\u2019s regular seat instead.<\/p>\n If you\u2019ve read many of the airplane seat stories I\u2019ve shared here, you can probably understand why I love this one so much.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve seen passengers being expected to move from seats they specifically selected. We\u2019ve seen people arguing over whether someone should<\/em> surrender a better seat so another family can sit together. We\u2019ve even seen couples deliberately book the window and aisle seats<\/a> hoping nobody will take the middle.<\/p>\n This woman wasn\u2019t asking for anything.<\/p>\n She already had the better seat, had apparently heard what happened at the gate, and decided to give it to a stranger who was having a bad start to her birthday.<\/p>\n \u201cDuring boarding a woman who\u2019d apparently overheard the interaction approached me and asked if they were able to find me anything. I said no, and she offered for me to take her comfort + seat and she would take mine. My initial response was of course no, that was an incredibly generous and kind offer but that I couldn\u2019t accept. She insisted. So now I\u2019m sitting in comfort, crying quiet, happy tears because I am so touched by her kindness.<\/p>\n If anyone at Delta sees this, and there is anything you can do to help me repay the woman who was supposed to be sitting in 10c on flight DL1351 to Pittsburgh, she deserves incredible kindness repaid to her.<\/p>\n If the woman who was supposed to be in 10c sees this \u2013 29 has been one of the hardest years of my life: thank you so, so much for helping me start of 30 on a better note. I promise will find a way to pay your kindness forward when I travel next.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Perhaps the sweetest part of the story is that the passenger apparently couldn\u2019t properly thank the woman afterward because she didn\u2019t know her name.<\/p>\n That is why she took the story to Reddit.\u00a0She addressed her post to the passenger who had traded away her Comfort+ seat and explained how much that gesture had meant to her.<\/p>\n But she went further than simply saying thank you.\u00a0She wanted Delta to find the woman.<\/p>\n In her message to the airline, she asked Delta to identify the passenger and reward her with miles, an upgrade or something else to recognize what she had done.<\/p>\n I love that part almost as much as the original gesture.\u00a0The stranger didn\u2019t give up her seat expecting anything in return. The passenger who received it, however, didn\u2019t want the kindness to end with her. She wanted the person who made her birthday better to get something back, too.<\/p>\n The post quickly attracted more than 4,400 upvotes, and while plenty of people wished her a happy birthday and praised the stranger who gave up her Comfort+ seat, something else happened in the comments that I wasn\u2019t expecting.<\/p>\n People who had already lived through their 30s, 40s, and 50s started telling her what getting older had actually been like for them \u2013 and, overwhelmingly, they told her she had a lot to look forward to.<\/p>\n One person wrote:<\/p>\n \u201cMy 30s were 10x better than my 20s.!!!! Happy Birthday OP!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n That prompted someone else to take it even further:<\/p>\n \u201c100%. And my 40s were better than my 30s which were better than my 20s. OP: the best is yet to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n And then came a wonderfully simple response from someone further along:<\/p>\n \u201cWait til 50s. Believe it or not it\u2019s even better.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n But one of my favorite comments came from a 53-year-old who wrote a much longer message about what those decades had taught her. She said her 20s were the decade she wouldn\u2019t choose to repeat, while her 30s and 40s brought her more comfort with herself and her life.<\/p>\n One line from her comment stayed with me:<\/p>\n \u201cI learned to give myself the grace I previously saved for others.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n She described her 20s as a time when she spent too much time questioning whether she was making the right decisions, worrying about other people\u2019s judgment, and comparing herself to standards other than her own. Her advice to the woman turning 30 was to stop thinking of her birthday as the loss of the life she had before.<\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t feel like you\u2019re losing your old life you\u2019re gaining a new rung on the ladder.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n She even suggested saving the Reddit post and coming back to it ten years later, because by then she would probably look back and realize just how good her 30s had been.<\/p>\n Another unexpected moment came when a commenter shared an original poem about learning to look beyond the person we see in the mirror and offer ourselves more kindness. That resonated with other women too. One person approaching 40 said she wanted to print it and put it on her mirror, while another simply responded, \u201cThis is lovely, thank you from turning 65.\u201d<\/p>\n And, of course, people loved what the stranger on the plane had done.<\/p>\n One commenter focused on the birthday passenger\u2019s promise to pass that kindness on:<\/p>\n \u201cJust by saying that you\u2019ll pay her kindness forward\u2026. OP, you\u2019re brave and awesome!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The passenger herself later returned to the post after seeing how much attention it had received. She explained that she had shared the experience because she was genuinely touched by the woman\u2019s kindness and knew that things had been feeling bleak for many people.<\/p>\n Her hope for everyone reading was simple: that they would experience a random act of kindness themselves on a difficult day and, when they could, pass that kindness on to somebody else.<\/p>\n Which makes the whole thing even better. One woman heard a stranger having a difficult moment at an airport and decided to make her day better. That passenger told Reddit about it because she wanted the woman to receive some recognition. Then thousands of strangers arrived with birthday wishes, encouragement and stories about why turning 30 might actually be the beginning of some very good years.<\/p>\n In a later edit, she thanks everyone for all the wishes, Delta crew and she adds:<\/p>\n \u201cEvery other interaction I had with Delta staff during this trip were completely lovely, and I\u2019m not judging the gate agent who made the age comment \u2013 sometimes people put their foot in their mouth, and they don\u2019t deserve to have their character as a whole judged by that. Even with the best intentions, we can still inadvertently hurt someone\u2019s feelings, it\u2019s part of the beautiful complexity of being human.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The best part? She invites people to pay kindness forward:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cMostly, I hope that each and every one of you gets to experience their own random act of kindness during a difficult day, and that you pay those kindnesses forward when you can, too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Airplane seat swaps have become such a reliable source of arguments that even a request to move can divide people immediately. Who paid for the seat? Is the alternative better or worse? Is a family involved? Should someone move just to be nice? Was the passenger already sitting in a seat that wasn\u2019t theirs?<\/p>\n I\u2019ve written about these variations again and again, and some have sparked enormous debates.<\/p>\n This one required none of those questions.\u00a0The passenger didn\u2019t ask the woman for her Comfort+ seat. She didn\u2019t pressure her, tell her it was her birthday or suggest that she somehow deserved an upgrade.\u00a0The woman offered it herself.<\/p>\n Maybe Delta will see the post and manage to identify her. I hope they do, because the birthday passenger\u2019s request that the airline reward the stranger who gave away her better seat might be my favorite part of the entire story.<\/p>\n But even if that never happens, thousands of people now know about something that would otherwise have remained between two strangers on a flight.<\/p>\n After so many stories about passengers making somebody else\u2019s journey worse, I think this was a pretty good way to start the week.<\/p>\n Note:<\/strong> I usually cover the surprising, frustrating or unusual situations travelers encounter, but I believe wonderful gestures deserve to be shared too.
