Every season has its share of data storytelling \u2014 games that weren\u2019t all they appeared to be; some coulda-woulda-shoulda\u2019s \u2014 but since 2020 there have been a higher share of those (including in the late Saban years), as well as a few real duds:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement tswlmh1 tswlmh0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list _1upudxki _1kyuonb0 _1mt21p01\">\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollbamaroll.com\/2024\/11\/24\/24304770\/graphing-the-tide-at-oklahoma-im-not-gonna-try-to-talk-you-out-of-this-one\">Graphing the Tide at Oklahoma: I\u2019m not gonna try to talk you out of this one<\/a> (2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollbamaroll.com\/alabama-crimson-tide-stats\/77689\/9-whatever-charts-from-the-seccg-loss\">9 \u201cwhatever\u201d charts from the SECCG loss<\/a> (2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">This season we\u2019ve had shades of nuance, including charting some \u201cwhiplash\u201d performances in the comebacks vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollbamaroll.com\/alabama-crimson-tide-football\/83951\/12-whiplash-graphs-from-the-kentucky-game\">Kentucky<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollbamaroll.com\/alabama-crimson-tide-stats\/84193\/13-whiplash-pt-2-charts-from-the-florida-state-game\">Florida State<\/a>. But the team \u2014 the offense especially \u2014 seems to be rounding into form just in time, and it\u2019s made graphing these games a relative breeze. (Dare I say, akin to some peak mid-late Saban years? Let\u2019s not get ahead of ourselves \u2026)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p><h2 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">Easy street: practical dominance<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Listen, it wasn\u2019t perfect: we knew we were going into a <s>noisy redneck<\/s> rough away environment against a QB, Kamario Taylor, that had a lot of deserved hype behind him. So you take the blows where they come and live with some ups and downs. <strong>But to end the first half with a &gt;80% win likelihood is a good feeling<\/strong>, and zipping it up to a &gt;95% chance early in the 3rd quarter is just fine and dandy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">I had reason to believe Alabama would be fine in this one (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollbamaroll.com\/post\/lwDKWREyOzkc\">posted accordingly<\/a>), but you never know with individual game performance. <strong>But I\u2019m feeling validated in this one:<\/strong> \u2018Bama\u2019s defense couldn\u2019t <em>zero out <\/em>the MSU Bulldogs, but they did plenty to put them in their place while the offense <em>feasted <\/em>on an <em>I-told-you-so <\/em>weaker Miss State defense.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">I mean, heck, <strong>it took <em>eight plays<\/em><\/strong> until the offense actually put up an <em>unsuccessful play<\/em>. And we only had three the entire first quarter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">From there it wasn\u2019t always cheery: in the 2nd quarter the passing offense shelled up, and the rushing offense also followed it down from its <em>divine<\/em> first quarter. <strong>But Keelon rallied<\/strong>, finding Lotzier for 50, then RCW for 22, and then Trayshawn Brown punched in the TD. Back on schedule.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\"><strong>They didn\u2019t stop in the 2nd half either:<\/strong> that Passing SR line trended back up into <em>well <\/em>above average territory, and the running game <em>thundered <\/em>through the 4th quarter to nearly reach a 70% Rushing SR before a few merciful kneel-downs at the end.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">So in the end, the totals look something like a <strong>60% total SR to MSU\u2019s 35%. In SEC play, that\u2019s domination.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">The Tide\u2019s Explosive Rate (XR) wasn\u2019t quite as remarkable, but was solidly high at 17%. Sure, Mississippi State closed out that 2nd quarter with a long (and fast) drive, but Alabama put up touchdowns in every quarter, and multiple scores in every quarter (albeit with the first quarter including a contribution from the Defense).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Note how \u201cflat\u201d the Tide\u2019s is compared to MSU, too: they were burning clock and moving the ball, keeping things on schedule instead of the boom-or-bust effect we\u2019ve seen before (and we saw from the other sideline).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\"><strong>Just compare the Drive charts for another view of how consistent Alabama\u2019s offense was:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">I mean, that\u2019s remarkable, even for our recent \u201cpretty good to great\u201d offenses. <strong>We only had 4 drives all day that were less than 6 plays<\/strong>, and that includes turnovers and that opening 5-play scoring drive (with a 100% SR).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Meanwhile, Kamario and co. had a few feisty drives in them: they scratched together a 12-play, 11-play, 10-play, and an 8-play drive in this game. (Yes, most while the result was solidly in hand). Otherwise, lots of 3-and-outs, a few turnovers, and dust.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\"><em>But let\u2019s find something to complain about, shall we?<\/em> Wouldn\u2019t be an \u201canalytics\u201d article _1mt21p01\">\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>The explosiveness really wasn\u2019t as high<\/strong> as we expected for either team, with MSU beating Tide with a middling 1.31 (to our even-more-middling 1.22) in the Explosiveness Index.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>MSU\u2019s late downs efficiency was workable<\/strong>, with a league-average-ish 41% 3rd down conversion rate, aided by a 100% (2\/2) 4th down conversion rate. In close games, that stuff counts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">The Tide was +2 in Turnover Margin, <em>but <\/em>in a game where <strong>they did have 2 turnovers.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>And the Bulldogs had 4 sacks on Keelon<\/strong>, mostly in the first half. (Albeit, Alabama had 5).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Oh, and how about this Anthony Evans III fella on Miss State\u2019s team?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">That is a <em>heck <\/em>of a game from Mr. Evans. This looks more like a Devonta Smith line than anything we\u2019ve seen around these parts for a few years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">But, hey, one breakout receiver performance <em>does not necessarily add up <\/em>to a win (or even close to it). Let\u2019s get a palette cleanser in Crimson:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Ahh, that\u2019s more like it. <strong>Keelon was slingin\u2019 it this week<\/strong>, delivering 7 explosive passes across 5 receivers \u2014 yep, that Noah Rodgers explosive was actually from <strong>Austin Mack<\/strong> \u2014 plus a few more targets for successful catches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">I\u2019m happy (if a little surprised) to report that <strong>Rico Scott<\/strong> is somewhere towards the top of our rotation, and he technically caught the most successful catches of anyone this week; <strong>it\u2019s Rico\u2019s first \u201cgame leading line\u201d as far as I can recall.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">So obviously, Keelon\u2019s passer line looks great this week \u2026 if, a little short? I kept re-checking the numbers here, but <strong>it seems like Keelon just did a lot of good work with only 22 pass attempts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">So his efficiency speaks volumes here: that\u2019s a 63.6% Passing SR with a 31.8% (!) Passing XR. Yep, about 1 in every 3 passes that Keelon threw went for &gt;15 yards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Look, Grubb and co. weren\u2019t exactly leaning <em>heavily <\/em>onto the run during all of this one \u2014 we were in \u201cpass first\u201d territory for most of the second half, in fact \u2014 but when we did, we made it work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">That Rushing SR gap between the Tide and the Bulldogs \u2014 65% to their 20% \u2014 is <strong>about the biggest gap I\u2019ve seen in either phase of the game<\/strong> from the Tide this year. <em>Wow<\/em>, more of that stuff, please!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">And the ordering of the backs feels a lot different this week, to boot. <strong>Trayshawn Brown<\/strong> \u2014 [insert comment about his being a 3-star freshman] \u2014 <em>easily <\/em>led the way in this one, with a <strong>strong 57% Rushing SR<\/strong> on a team-leading 14 attempts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">But the <em>height <\/em>of this Rushers chart is crazy this week: <em><strong>we actually had more rushers than receivers this week<\/strong><\/em>, which is highly unusual!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement tswlmh1 tswlmh0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list _1upudxki _1kyuonb0 _1mt21p01\">\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>Daniel Hill<\/strong> and <strong>E.J. Crowell<\/strong> gave some \u201cchange of pace\u201d in supporting roles this week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>Keelon<\/strong> and <strong>Austin Mack<\/strong> both did a little timely scrambling (all successful rushes)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>Kevin Riley<\/strong> helped clean up at the end.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\"><strong>A.K. Dear<\/strong> continues to get approx. 1 touch a game (I wonder what\u2019s going on there)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_1kyuonb2 _1kyuonb1\"><span class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">And some gadget runs to <strong>Marshall Pritchett<\/strong> and <strong>Rico Scott<\/strong> met mixed success. But it\u2019s interesting putting this stuff on tape!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">And that\u2019s all she wrote.
