A thoroughly welcome result and a reminder that local campaigning deserves<br \/>\nits place alongside the Westminster headlines. Congratulations to everyone who<br \/>\nknocked on doors, delivered leaflets and helped get voters to the polls.<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nCheers <\/b>to Andy Burnham for probably the most positive conference speech from a<br \/>\nserving Prime Minister in living memory. Yes, I would have liked to hear a<br \/>\nlittle more detail on some proposals\u2026 but overall Lib Dems should be broadly<br \/>\nsupportive because he was articulating the kinds of things Lib Dems want to<br \/>\nhear. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Cheers<\/b> \u2013 cautiously \u2013 to the Labour Party for finally<br \/>\ncommitting to a Commission for Electoral Reform. After so many false starts it<br \/>\nfeels like overdue progress may finally be being made. Liberal Democrats have<br \/>\nevery reason to welcome a chance to make votes count more fairly, while keeping<br \/>\na close eye on what happens next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Cheers <\/b>to Pippa<br \/>\nHeylings<\/span> for pressing the government this week to introduce the Liberal<br \/>\nDemocrats\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libdems.org.uk\/press\/release\/heylings-protect-our-most-vulnerable-this-winter-pm-introduce-our-essential-energy-guarantee\" target=\"_blank\">essential energy guarantee<\/a> to protect vulnerable households. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Cheers <\/b>to the<br \/>\nGreen-Lib Dem controlled Folkestone and Hythe District Council\u2019s staff<\/span><br \/>\nfor winning the national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhld.uk\/news\/article\/folkestone-hythe-dc-irrv-excellence-in-social-inclusion-winners-2026\" target=\"_blank\">IRRV award for Excellence in Social Inclusion<\/a> for the<br \/>\nthird year running, alongside a highly commended award for its benefits and<br \/>\nwelfare team. Helping vulnerable residents rarely attracts the attention given<br \/>\nto political rows, but this is council work worth celebrating. Congratulations<br \/>\nto those delivering practical support when people need it most.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Cheers<\/b> to the<br \/>\nOrganization of American States<\/span> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/top-americas-diplomats-back-joint-call-nicaragua-restore-civic-liberties-2026-10-02\/\" target=\"_blank\">calling on Nicaragua to restore civil liberties<\/a> and release political prisoners<span style=\"background: white; color: #212121; font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 13.5pt; letter-spacing: .25pt; line-height: 115%;\"> <\/span>following President Daniel Ortega\u2019s<br \/>\nannouncement earlier this summer that he\u2019s ending national elections and<br \/>\neffectively banning opposition.\u00a0International pressure needs to be<br \/>\nsustained, defending the right to organise and oppose a government is a<br \/>\nsignificant step.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Cheers<\/b> to those<br \/>\ndelivering food and medicine to Oleshky<\/span>, the Russian-occupied Ukrainian<br \/>\ntown where civilians face severe shortages. Reuters reported this week that<br \/>\nUkrainian forces had used heavy-lift drones to deliver around four tonnes of<br \/>\nsupplies, according to the regional governor. Amid the destruction of war,<br \/>\nefforts to keep people fed and cared for deserve recognition. Britain should<br \/>\ncontinue supporting Ukraine and pressing for humanitarian access and the<br \/>\nprotection of civilians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Cheers<\/b> to Latvian<br \/>\nvoters<\/span>. Latvia\u2019s General Election offers a mixed picture for Liberals,<br \/>\nbut Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs\u2019 pro-Ukraine United List securing 35.8% of<br \/>\nthe vote is an encouraging result for those who believe European cooperation<br \/>\nand solidarity with Ukraine are essential to defending freedom. Kulbergs will<br \/>\nstill need partners and talks may prove difficult as his former coalition<br \/>\nallies, the Union of Greens and Farmers, lost all 16 of their seats while<br \/>\npopulist parties have gained. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Nevertheless,<br \/>\nKulbergs\u2019 stated refusal to govern with Latvia First is welcome. Support for<br \/>\nUkraine should not become a bargaining chip in coalition negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Jeers <\/b>to those<br \/>\noffering accommodation with Moscow as an answer to Latvia\u2019s problems<\/span>,<br \/>\nexploiting understandable anxiety about living costs and security<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jeers <\/b>to Ed Davey for his churlish, misguided and mean-spirited<br \/>\nknee-jerk response to the Prime Minister\u2019s speech and specifically in relation<br \/>\nto social care and the pensions triple lock. To state that \u201cBurnham is risking<br \/>\na repeat of the Winter Fuel Payment fiasco\u201d or that Labour plans to fund social<br \/>\ncare \u201cfrom the pockets of our poorest pensioners\u201d is nonsense. I might expect a<br \/>\nformer coalition minister to defend the triple lock, but there is no excuse for<br \/>\nperpetuating untruths. I suspect Ed does actually know how pensions work, so I<br \/>\ncan only assume he is deliberately peddling misinformation for cynical<br \/>\npolitical motivations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jeers<\/b> too for John Swinney, for his dishonest claim that Scottish<br \/>\npensioners will be \u00a32000 worse off by 2049 under Andy Burnham&#8217;s proposed<br \/>\nchanges to the triple lock. The figure is derived from a Scottish Govt<br \/>\nextrapolation of UK-wide savings for 2049-50, not money taken from pensioners. The<br \/>\nFirst Minister seems to ignore the impact of Barnett consequential generated by<br \/>\nthe proposed social care spending rises in England. He also told parliament:<br \/>\n\u201cwe\u2019ve been taken out of the European Union, we\u2019re now going to lose out<br \/>\npensions, Scotland needs to have independence\u201d. I expected better from him than<br \/>\nto deliberately mislead in order to manufacture grievance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Jeers<\/b> to Nigel<br \/>\nFarage and Reform UK for their reckless scaremongering over Fairford<\/span>,<br \/>\nseizing on the arrests to suggest a connection with Iranian agents supposedly arriving<br \/>\non small boats (an idea as implausible as it is laughable) before the facts<br \/>\nwere established. Police subsequently confirmed that all five suspects were<br \/>\nBritish nationals; they were released on bail while investigations continued.<br \/>\nThat does not settle questions about possible foreign involvement, but it<br \/>\ncertainly does not substantiate his small-boats insinuation. Serious security<br \/>\ninvestigations demand evidence and restraint. Turning uncertainty into<br \/>\ninflammatory migration rhetoric is disgracefully irresponsible from anyone<br \/>\naspiring to lead the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Jeers<\/b> to Reform-run<br \/>\nDerbyshire County Council<\/span> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckg59rp4lpvvo\" target=\"_blank\">refusing to cooperate with local democracy reporter Eddie Bisknell<\/a>. Elected representatives should answer scrutiny,<br \/>\nincluding questions they find awkward. Public accountability cannot depend on<br \/>\nwhether a council approves of a journalist\u2019s coverage: residents are entitled<br \/>\nto know how their money is spent and decisions are made.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jeers<\/b> to the return of the Drumcree dispute, which most of<br \/>\nus had naively believed had been successfully consigned to history. For 28<br \/>\nyears, the Orange Order has been prevented from completing its traditional Drumcree<br \/>\nreturn parade along the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown, but this<br \/>\nweek the issue has exploded back into controversy. In the words of Naomi Long,<br \/>\nAlliance MLA for East Belfast, \u201cPandora\u2019s box has been opened, unleashing an<br \/>\nentirely predictable, destructive and wholly avoidable sequence of events\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ulster has spent decades trying to move beyond the sectarian<br \/>\ndivisions and violence of the past.\u00a0Without going into detail, this raises<br \/>\nall kinds of questions. What does reopening this dispute actually achieve? Does<br \/>\nit improve relations between unionists and nationalists? Does it contribute<br \/>\nanything towards reconciliation? Why bring this battle back now? What is the<br \/>\nOrange Order trying to achieve? Is it likely to prove counterproductive? And<br \/>\nwhat does this say about where Unionism is at the moment? <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jeers<\/b> also to St Helens Council leader George Woodward<br \/>\n(Reform). Speaking to Kevin Duala on Radio Merseyside, he was asked if the<br \/>\ncouncil would me marking Holocaust Memorial Day. Woodward\u2019s response was: \u201cThe<br \/>\njury\u2019s out on that. We\u2019ll come to that when we get there. We have cancelled<br \/>\nRefugees\u2019 Week, we then didn\u2019t celebrate Pride\u2026 on the whole we said broadly we<br \/>\nwon\u2019t be doing these sorts of celebrations\u2026 we\u2019re OK with Christian calendar<br \/>\nevents and things which are unifying.\u201d How does Holocaust Memorial Day divide? After<br \/>\nspeaking with council officers Woodward later confirmed the council will mark<br \/>\nHMD, but if a council leader, even a Reform council leader, isn\u2019t able to<br \/>\nrespond to that kind of question with anything other than \u201cYes, of course!\u201d, <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>then their judgement is seriously in question.<br \/>\nAny reasonable person should instinctively recognise the importance of<br \/>\nremembering the Holocaust and its victims. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Jeers<\/b> to the state<br \/>\nof Tennessee for its appalling and utterly horrifying attempted execution of<br \/>\nChrista Pike<\/span>, who survived two lethal injections and is now critically<br \/>\nill in hospital. Her lawyers had warned about the medical difficulties that<br \/>\ncould make the procedure disastrous. In any ordinary moral sense, \u201ccruel and<br \/>\nunusual punishment\u201d scarcely begins to describe this ordeal. The state\u2019s<br \/>\ninsistence that it followed its protocol makes the defence more chilling: what<br \/>\ndoes that say about the protocol? Colleen Slemmer\u2019s murder was horrific, and<br \/>\nher family deserves compassion, but their suffering cannot justify the state<br \/>\ninflicting further deliberate suffering. Tennessee\u2019s treatment of Christa Pike<br \/>\nis such a damning indictment of capital punishment that it should shame the<br \/>\nUnited States into abolishing this barbaric practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Jeers<\/b>, too, to the<br \/>\nmachinery that worked to ensure the execution went ahead<\/span>, with<br \/>\nTennessee\u2019s lawyers seeking to overturn a temporary stay so Pike could be<br \/>\nkilled before further consideration of her childhood sexual-abuse claims. A<br \/>\nprocedural review is an utterly inadequate response to such a profound moral<br \/>\nfailure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Jeers <\/b>to Senator<br \/>\nMarsha Blackburn<\/span>, who responded to this horror by pledging to \u201cbring back<br \/>\nthe electric chair\u201d if elected governor of Tennessee. Sadly, calls to abolish<br \/>\ncapital punishment will be unlikely to be successful as long as politicians see<br \/>\nelectoral advantage in cruelty and inhumanity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Jeers <\/b>to Georgia\u2019s<br \/>\ngovernment<\/span> as funding restrictions and its crackdown on civil society<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sovanews.tv\/en\/2026\/10\/03\/alde-party-calls-for-sanctions-against-those-responsible-for-repression-in-georgia\/   https:\/\/georgiatoday.ge\/friedrich-naumann-foundation-closes-tbilisi-office\/\" target=\"_blank\">prompt the liberal Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom to leave the country<\/a>. Independent organisations and a free press are essential to democratic<br \/>\naccountability. Making their work increasingly difficult should alarm anyone<br \/>\nwho cares about Georgia\u2019s democratic future and its citizens\u2019 freedom to<br \/>\nchallenge those in power. ALDE have already called for sanctions against the Georgian<br \/>\nregime. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Tears <\/b>for Dame<br \/>\nEsther Rantzen, who died this week aged 86, leaving an extraordinary legacy of<br \/>\ncompassion and campaigning. Through <i>That\u2019s Life!<\/i>, Childline and The<br \/>\nSilver Line, she helped bring neglected suffering into public view and offered<br \/>\npeople somewhere to turn when they felt frightened, isolated or unheard. The<br \/>\nmoment she surprised Nicholas Winton with an audience containing people he had<br \/>\nrescued as children from the Nazis was arguably the greatest moment in<br \/>\ntelevision history \u2014 an unforgettable revelation of lives saved and humanity at<br \/>\nits finest. In her final years, she brought the same determination to<br \/>\ncampaigning for choice and dignity at the end of life. Her finest memorial will<br \/>\nbe the people who found help because she insisted their voices mattered. Our<br \/>\nthoughts are with her family, friends and everyone whose life she touched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Tears<\/b> for those<br \/>\nkilled and injured in Monday\u2019s Russian attacks on Ukraine<\/span>, including the<br \/>\nvictims of a strike on the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv. Reuters<br \/>\nreported at least ten deaths across the country and more than eighty people<br \/>\ninjured. Behind every casualty figure are families, colleagues and communities<br \/>\nwhose lives have been shattered. Our solidarity with Ukraine must include<br \/>\nsustained support for civilian protection, as well as a just peace that respects<br \/>\nits sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>Tears<\/b> for the three<br \/>\npeople, including a child, who died attempting to cross the Channel on Monday<\/span>,<br \/>\nand for the survivors and bereaved families. French authorities reported that<br \/>\nthe overcrowded dinghy had run into trouble off northern France. Every such<br \/>\nloss should strengthen the determination to tackle smugglers, improve rescue<br \/>\ncooperation and provide workable safe routes for people seeking protection.<br \/>\nCompassion belongs at the centre of the response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Finally, in non-political news, <b>c<\/b><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"><b>heers <\/b>to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c6grve8en0e4o\" target=\"_blank\">Xanthe the python<\/a><\/span>, reunited with her owner in<br \/>\nPeterborough after more than two weeks missing. Having escaped her enclosure<br \/>\nand slipped through an open door, local people spent over a fortnight trying to<br \/>\nlocate her safely. Xanthe was eventually found in a neighbour\u2019s garden on<br \/>\nTuesday. A happy ending for owner Jacob Edwards, and a reassuring reminder that<br \/>\nsome lengthy neighbourhood disputes can be resolved without a planning appeal.<span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;\"> <\/span>Any<br \/>\nLiberal Democrat campaign organiser must surely admire her ability to cover a<br \/>\npatch without being seen. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>I wish Xanthe<br \/>\na comfortable retirement from escapology. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Julie Calder (Photo: Scottish Lib Dems) Here is another weekly round-up of the news, this week with far more jeers than there are cheers.
