Ever heard of the Crit\u2019Air Sticker (Vignette)?\u00a0<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t\u2014until a reader emailed me in a panic a while ago. Diane wrote:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are flying from Canada and staying in Paris for seven days before picking up our leased car. But it doesn\u2019t seem possible to get the Crit\u2019Air sticker in time\u2026.. Any advice?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her email came at an opportune time because I realized I\u2019d be in the same position as her. I was going to be leasing a car and had no idea about the Crit\u2019Air sticker. That got me digging and like Diane, I learned that understanding France\u2019s Crit\u2019Air rules early could save headaches later.<\/p>\n

1. What Is A Crit\u2019Air Sticker?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Introduced in 2016 to reduce air pollution from vehicles, the Crit\u2019Air<\/strong> (Air Quality Certificate or \u201cCertificat qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019air\u201d) is a colour-coded sticker (\u201cvignette\u201d) placed on your windshield that rates your vehicle from 0 to 5 based on its emissions and age.<\/p>\n

It restricts traffic in high-density areas\u2014mainly large urban centres\u2014known as Low Emission Zones<\/strong> (Zones \u00e0 Faibles \u00c9missions, or ZFE).<\/p>\n

You can check your car\u2019s classification using the official site: https:\/\/www.certificat-air.gouv.fr<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The vignette is inexpensive, valid for the vehicle\u2019s lifetime, and must be displayed on the lower right-hand corner of your windshield. (Don\u2019t remove it\u2014you might rip it and won\u2019t be able to reapply it!)<\/p>\n

2. Where And When Do You Need It?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

All French cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants are now required to implement ZFE rules (Source: https:\/\/www.service-public.gouv.fr\/particuliers\/actualites\/A17999?lang=en<\/a>)<\/h3>\n

Paris and Lyon already enforce weekday Crit\u2019Air 3 bans, and even smaller towns may apply short-term restrictions during smog alerts.<\/p>\n

Tip:<\/strong> Use the official ZFE map<\/a><\/strong> to check if your route enters a restricted zone\u00a0<\/p>\n
