For more than 25 years, the Airbus A340 was one of the aircraft types most closely associated with Virgin Atlantic.<\/p>\n
Alongside the airline\u2019s Boeing 747s, these four-engined Airbuses became familiar sights at London Heathrow and Gatwick, flying passengers to destinations across North America, Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n
Virgin Atlantic would ultimately operate both the Airbus A340-300 and the much larger A340-600, becoming particularly closely associated with the latter.<\/p>\n
\n You Might Be Interested In<\/span><\/p>\n But where did Virgin Atlantic\u2019s A340s go after they left the fleet, and are any still flying today?<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Virgin Atlantic introduced the Airbus A340-300 in 1993, making it one of the airline\u2019s first major moves away from the Boeing 747 on its long-haul network.<\/p>\n The airline operated 10 A340-300s in total, including the second off the production line.<\/p>\n With four CFM International CFM56 engines and impressive long-range capabilities, the A340 was ideally suited to Virgin Atlantic\u2019s expanding network at a time when restrictions and perceptions surrounding twin-engined aircraft still made four engines attractive for long overwater flights.<\/p>\n The type flew from London to destinations including New York, Boston, Orlando and many other points on Virgin\u2019s growing network. Early schedules in 1993 and 1994 saw the aircraft operating from both Gatwick and Heathrow.<\/p>\n It also fitted perfectly with Virgin Atlantic\u2019s marketing.\u00a0For many years the airline famously promoted the slogan \u201c4 Engines 4 Long Haul\u201d<\/strong>, referring to its fleet of A340s and Boeing 747s.<\/p>\n Eventually, however, the economics of four-engined airliners began working against them.\u00a0Newer twin-engined aircraft could fly just as far while burning significantly less fuel, and Virgin Atlantic began introducing Airbus A330s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners as part of its fleet renewal.<\/p>\n The final Virgin Atlantic A340-300 commercial services took place in 2015<\/strong>, bringing more than two decades of service with the airline to an end.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Virgin Atlantic was the launch customer for the A340-600<\/strong>, introducing it in August 2002.<\/p>\n At more than 75 metres long, the A340-600 was an extraordinary-looking aircraft and, until the arrival of the Boeing 747-8, held the title of the world\u2019s longest passenger airliner.<\/p>\n Virgin Atlantic would operate 19 A340-600s, according to the airline\u2019s historical fleet records.<\/p>\n The aircraft offered much greater capacity than the earlier A340-300 and became a regular sight on some of Virgin Atlantic\u2019s most important long-haul routes.<\/p>\n Powered by four Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines, the huge A340-600 was particularly impressive to see departing Heathrow fully loaded for a long-haul flight.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Chris Lofting (GFDL 1.2 The problem was simple: four engines were becoming increasingly difficult to justify.<\/p>\n Aircraft such as the Boeing 787-9 offered Virgin Atlantic similar long-haul capabilities with two engines instead of four, bringing significant improvements in fuel consumption and operating costs.<\/p>\n Virgin therefore gradually reduced its A340 fleet as Dreamliners arrived.<\/p>\n The A340-600 actually survived longer than originally expected. Its retirement was postponed several times, partly because Virgin Atlantic needed additional aircraft while some of its Boeing 787s underwent Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine work.<\/p>\n Virgin Atlantic\u2019s final scheduled A340-600 passenger flight operated from Lagos to London Heathrow on 8 March 2020<\/strong>. The type was formally retired the following day.<\/p>\n The timing was remarkable. Within days, the Covid-19 pandemic would cause international air travel to collapse, with Virgin Atlantic subsequently parking most of its fleet.\u00a0There would be no comeback for the A340.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n By Anna Zvereva from Tallinn, Estonia (Mahan Air, EP-MMR, Airbus A340-642) [CC BY-SA 2.0 (https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Retirement from Virgin Atlantic did not necessarily mean the end of the aircraft themselves.<\/p>\n As you will see from our fleet list below, the former Virgin aircraft followed a surprisingly varied range of paths.<\/p>\n Some were placed into storage or eventually broken up, while others found new owners and continued flying.<\/p>\n Perhaps most interestingly for today\u2019s aircraft spotters, some former Virgin Atlantic A340s found their way into the fleets of airlines in Iran<\/strong>, where older Western-built widebody aircraft have often enjoyed much longer careers.<\/p>\n Mahan Air in particular became a major operator of the A340 family, including the enormous A340-600. The airline has operated A340-200, -300 and -600 variants as part of its unusual long-haul fleet.<\/p>\n Other former Virgin aircraft found completely different roles.\u00a0Some of the airline\u2019s old A340s have been associated with European Cargo<\/strong>, the Bournemouth-based operator which has given a new lease of life to ageing Airbus widebodies in the cargo market. The airline went into administration earlier in 2026, but there are hints that the aircraft could be flying once again with a recent rescue package and a new owner.<\/p>\n This means that, despite disappearing from Virgin Atlantic\u2019s fleet years ago, examples of the airline\u2019s former A340s have continued to turn up in some unexpected corners of the aviation world.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n\n
