She wants passion to be accompanied by knowledge and practical skills.

She has seen how difficult it can be for women and children to navigate systems designed to protect them. She also understands that domestic violence and sexual assault rarely affect only one part of a person’s life.

Violence can touch physical and mental health, housing, finances, parenting, education and personal safety simultaneously. Children living within those circumstances can experience consequences that adults may not immediately see.

For Brooke, that interconnectedness means advocacy cannot focus on only one piece of the problem.

It must see the whole person—and the whole family.

From Awareness to Action

Brooke initially became interested in helping people navigate complicated systems. Over time, however, another question began demanding her attention:

Why do these systems work the way they do, and what needs to change?

That question drew her increasingly toward policy and legislative advocacy.

One of the most significant projects she is developing focuses on protecting children affected by domestic violence. Her goal is to pursue meaningful reform at the federal level and address gaps within systems intended to keep children safe.

She is particularly interested in the intersection of child safety, domestic violence and family-court systems, and she wants to understand the legislative process from every angle—research, coalition building, policy drafting, legislative strategy and implementation.

“Children don’t choose the homes, circumstances or systems they are born into,” Brooke says. “They depend on adults to recognize danger, listen to them and make decisions that prioritize their physical and emotional safety.”

Ask Brooke what single issue she would most like people to act upon, and her answer is only two words:

Protect children.

But for Brooke, protecting children also means recognizing the environment surrounding them. It means supporting the women caring for them, addressing domestic and sexual violence, expanding access to mental-health services and examining policies that may unintentionally leave vulnerable families without adequate protection.

Listen Before You Lead

Among the leadership lessons Brooke has learned, one stands above the others:

Listen before you lead.

It is a deceptively simple philosophy, but in advocacy work, she believes it is essential.

“People don’t always need someone to immediately tell them what to do,” she explains. “Sometimes they need someone willing to hear them without judgment.”

Listening also means respecting another person’s agency.

“My role isn’t to take someone’s voice away by speaking over them,” Brooke says. “It is to help make sure their voice can be heard.”

That philosophy extends to the way she views leadership itself.

Brooke has also learned that compassion and boundaries can coexist. Caring deeply about others does not mean carrying everything alone. Sustainable advocacy requires collaboration, appropriate boundaries and the wisdom to recognize when another professional or organization is better equipped to provide the help someone needs.

And meaningful change requires patience.

“When you care deeply about an issue, you want to fix everything immediately,” she says. “But sustainable change requires patience, education, collaboration and persistence.”

Her answer has been to keep showing up, keep learning and keep moving the work forward.

A Woman Does Not Have to Fit Into One Box

There is another dimension to Brooke’s story that she embraces unapologetically.

She is also a model.

At first glance, modeling and public policy might appear to inhabit completely different worlds. Brooke sees no contradiction at all.

“I believe women can be intelligent, educated, feminine, creative, strong and deeply serious about changing the world,” she says. “We don’t have to choose one identity.”

Modeling gives her a creative outlet far removed from research, academics and advocacy. She enjoys fashion, beauty, art and the process of creating an image. She also loves music, cooking and history and is an enthusiastic admirer of classic cars and aviation.

That curiosity is part of who she is.

For generations, women have often been encouraged to make themselves easily definable—to select a lane and stay there.

Brooke rejects that idea.

“Intelligence and beauty aren’t opposites,” she says. “Neither are strength and femininity, compassion and ambition, or advocacy and creativity.”

It is a message that fits naturally within her larger mission: women deserve the freedom to be seen as whole human beings rather than categories.

Bringing the Voices Into the Room

In five years, Brooke hopes her advocacy will have expanded substantially into policy and legislative work.

But growth comes with an important condition.

She never wants to become so immersed in institutions that she loses sight of the people those institutions are supposed to serve.

“I never want advocacy to become so institutional that we forget the individual person,” she says.

Her vision reaches from the woman privately questioning whether what she is experiencing is abuse, to the child who needs an adult to advocate for their safety, to the rooms where legislation is debated and written.

Brooke wants those worlds connected.

She wants the experiences of people living these realities to travel all the way into the rooms where decisions affecting their lives are made.

That means continuing the boots-on-the-ground work: connecting with individuals and families, participating in community outreach, supporting fundraising efforts and collaborating with organizations already serving women and children.

It also means carrying what she learns there into conversations about policy.

One More Woman. One More Child.

When asked what she most wants WE Magazine readers to know, Brooke’s message becomes intensely personal.

“Your life matters,” she says. “Not because of what you accomplish, how strong you have been, how much you have endured, or how much you do for everyone around you. You matter simply because you are here.”

She wants women living with violence, trauma, sexual assault, depression or fear to understand that the moment they are experiencing today does not have to become the entirety of their story.

And she wants society to remember the children living quietly within those stories—the children who hear arguments through bedroom walls, learn to read the mood of a room before they understand why, and carry fears they may not yet have the words to describe.

For Brooke, this is where awareness must become something tangible.

Compassion can look like answering a phone call. Finding a safe bed. Sitting beside a frightened woman. Raising money for services. Listening without judgment. Improving access to physical and mental healthcare. Protecting a child.

And sometimes, it means challenging a system that is not adequately protecting the people it was created to serve.

Brooke intends to spend her life working across that entire spectrum—from individual advocacy and community involvement to the places where policy can create lasting change.

“If my work accomplishes anything,” she says, “I hope it helps one more woman make it to tomorrow. One more child feel safe. One more person understand that asking for help is not the end of their story.”

It is perhaps the clearest expression of Brooke Gaudi’s mission.

Awareness can begin the conversation.

But compassion must become action.

About Brooke Gaudi

Brooke Gaudi is a public service professional, independent advocate and model whose work focuses on women and children, including domestic violence, sexual assault, women’s physical and mental health, child safety and systemic change.
