Networking muscles atrophy faster than you think. I found that out the hard way.<\/p>\n

For three years, I worked head-down at a fast-growing production company. The job was great, but it was all-consuming and left no room for conferences or community. When I finally returned to the circuit, event networking felt less like second nature and more like rehab for the socially rusty.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/h2>\n

So why pour energy into something as unglamorous as small talk? Because for most of your attendees, it is the main event.<\/p>\n

In the Freeman Trends Report (via the Professional Convention Management Association, or PCMA), networking ranked as one of the four primary reasons people attend events. When attendees ranked what matters most, 81 percent chose interacting with experts, 68 percent chose meeting new contacts, and 64 percent chose peer-to-peer exchange.<\/p>\n

People do not travel for the slide decks. They come to meet peers, trade ideas, and build relationships. Yet event networking is often left to chance. My comeback taught me how to design it on purpose, and the networking tips below come straight from that reset.<\/p>\n

Give People a Reason to Talk<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The fastest way to get attendees talking is to give them a specific reason to. Skip the forced icebreakers and hand people a shared prompt, question, or industry challenge, and the conversation starts itself.<\/p>\n

My first stop was Minnesota Meetings & Events Day, where I stumbled into Nicole Coon\u2019s session, \u201cFive-Star Connections: Networking in Action.\u201d Her approach was deceptively simple. We rotated from table to table with specific prompts: likes, dislikes, and pain points in the events industry. No trust falls. No scrambling for a \u201cfun fact\u201d about yourself.<\/p>\n

Around the third or fourth shuffle, our groups quietly abandoned the rotation and just kept talking.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive people a reason to talk and they will. The hard part isn\u2019t the conversation. It\u2019s the opening.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lesson stuck with me. You do not need elaborate icebreakers. You need to remove the friction and let relevance take over.<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, I attended the Smart Meetings Innovation Experience in Boise, Idaho. If Minnesota was rehab, Boise was my first real game back on the court.<\/p>\n

Familiar faces like Dalia El Gazar and Nick Borelli reminded me of a rule I had half-forgotten: do not take yourself too seriously. Before I knew it, I had joined a full conga line through the venue. Later, I was dancing in the streets with Basque traditional dancers.<\/p>\n

Is there embarrassing footage? Almost certainly. That is kind of the point.<\/p>\n

Sitting networking out carries a real business cost, not just a social one. Attendees who leave without genuine connections rarely return, which turns attendee engagement into a retention problem rather than a soft metric.<\/p>\n

Not everyone joined. At the edge of the conga line, three or four people stood with phones out and heads down, opting out entirely.<\/p>\n

The contrast was telling. The people who danced, and who stayed too long at Nicole\u2019s tables, left with more than a business card. The people on their phones left with a slightly-less-full inbox and little else.<\/p>\n

Networking is not a passive activity. It asks for effort, a willingness to be uncomfortable, and a willingness to be seen.<\/p>\n

There is a business cost hiding in those screens, too. Attendees who leave without real connections rarely return, which makes attendee engagement a retention issue rather than a soft metric.<\/p>\n

For reluctant networkers, quality beats quantity every time. A handful of real conversations that continue after the event beats a stack of business cards. Stay at the table when a conversation gets good, even when you feel the pull to move on.<\/p>\n

By the time I reached IMEX Frankfurt, I was back up to strength. Pressed into booth service, I took 22 appointments instead of my six scheduled ones, and it was a joy to make scores of new connections.<\/p>\n

My advice for anyone still feeling rusty is blunt: go anyway.<\/p>\n

Stay at the table when the conversation gets good, even when you feel the pull to move on. The connections you make just outside your comfort zone tend to be the ones that stick.<\/p>\n

Then put the phone away. You can answer that email later. The conga line only comes around once, and strong attendee engagement starts with the decision to stay present.<\/p>\n
