{"id":7075658,"date":"2026-10-04T13:17:22","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T13:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7075658"},"modified":"2026-10-04T13:17:22","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T13:17:22","slug":"decanter-hall-of-fame-lalou-bize-leroy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7075658","title":{"rendered":"Decanter Hall of Fame: Lalou Bize-Leroy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p id=\"elk-23e0fffe-bc07-11f1-8621-cf3f765963b7\">Visitors to Domaine Leroy are greeted with a version of a quote attributed to Salvador Dali: \u2018Those who know how to taste no longer drink wine but taste secrets.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Many would doubtless be delighted to learn the secrets of the proprietor, Madame Bize-Leroy, one of the wine world\u2019s most successful entrepreneurs. Leroy has long been a name with which to conjure.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"wine\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"elk-23e0fffe-bc07-11f1-8621-cf3f765963b7-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Maison Leroy was created in 1868 by Fran\u00e7ois Leroy and developed by his son Joseph and grandson Henri, who took charge in 1919.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The present pinnacle of the house\u2019s renown, however, is due to both Henri and his daughter Marcelle, known to the world as &#8216;Lalou&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Few winemakers have had as lasting an impact on Burgundy and the larger world of winemaking as she has.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Hers were the first notable estates in Burgundy to adopt biodynamic viticulture, and she has produced wines of hitherto inconceivable concentration and power.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Her leadership on biodynamic grape-growing has influenced generations of growers, with many implementing elements of this philosophy, even as the number of certified-biodynamic domaines remains fairly modest.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-omp424MBGu6oGKBMCLWFQ8\" rigorous sorting, although her success here was often admired but seldom imitated, since few domaines could command the prices she did, which made this approach economically viable.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5c2aa558-bc08-11f1-b8bb-81c181de0e53\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Born in Paris in 1932 to Henri Leroy and his wife Simone Brun, Lalou always longed to work beside her father.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Her dream didn\u2019t take long to materialise \u2013 he gave her control of the n\u00e9gociant business in 1955 at the age of 23.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The family had long owned vineyards, and had developed other businesses as well, buying and selling both wines and spirits.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Henri\u2019s great passion, however, was the wines of Domaine de la Roman\u00e9e-Conti (DRC).<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">He had been a devoted customer and friend to proprietor Edmond Gaudin de Villaine throughout the difficult years of the Great Depression (1929-1939).<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">When de Villaine\u2019s business partner Jacques Chambon decided to sell his half of the domaine in 1942, Henri Leroy leapt at the chance to purchase it, and in the years that followed, he lavished his attention on it.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">As his daughter notes: \u2018Henri Leroy made this domaine one of the jewels of Burgundy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Perhaps inevitably, his n\u00e9gociant business received less of his attention, and in 1955 his young daughter began to buy the wines for Maison Leroy.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">She has long been famed for her acuity as a taster and, judging by the results, she did a remarkable job, even from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">I have had the extraordinary good fortune to taste many vintages of Maison Leroy wines from the 1960s and 1970s with collector friends, providing indelible wine experiences during the years I was living in Asia and later.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Bottles of 1962 La Roman\u00e9e, 1966 Grands Echezeaux, and 1971 Corton from Maison Leroy were just a few of the spectacular wines from that era that I still remember vividly.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Roemer, the maison\u2019s sales director and Mme Bize-Leroy\u2019s right-hand man, explained at the time that she looked for a classic style, remarking that &#8216;the 1955 is the reference standard of where the house wants to be with the Chambertin, while 1949 is the reference for retirement, working alongside Aubert de Villaine.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Then in 1988, she purchased Domaine Charles No\u00ebllat in Vosne-Roman\u00e9e and Domaine Philippe R\u00e9my in Gevrey-Chambertin with the backing of Japanese partners, combining the vineyards to form the nucleus of Domaine Leroy.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">At the same time, she purchased the interest of her sister Pauline Roch in the vines that they had inherited jointly from their parents and incorporated them into Domaine d\u2019Auvenay, which she owns outright.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">D\u2019Auvenay is the home in the hills above St-Romain that she shared with her late husband Marcel Bize and where she still abides.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In 1992, she resigned from her role as co-director of DRC to focus on her two domaines; she was succeeded in this role by her daughter, Perrine Fenal. Domaine Leroy focuses on red wine.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Mme Bize-Leroy is quite specific about its dimensions, stating that \u2018it currently comprises 22ha, 19 ares and 85 centiares\u2019.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">It includes eight village-level vineyards and eight premiers crus (see box). The pride of the domaine, however, are the nine grands crus.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">At Domaine d\u2019Auvenay, on the other hand, the focus was initially on white wine.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">She began with vineyards in Auxey Duresses and Meursault, to which she added holdings in PulignyMontrachet and Meursault, including grands crus Chevalier-Montrachet, Criots-B\u00e2tard-Montrachet and B\u00e2tard-Montrachet, with red wines from Bonnes-Mares and Mazis-Chambertin thrown in for good measure.<\/p>\n<div class=\"boxout fancy-box id=\"elk-5c2aa792-bc08-11f1-b5f6-0b01cef9d960\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"biodynamic-from-the-start-3\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Biodynamic from the start <\/h2>\n<p id=\"elk-5c2aa800-bc08-11f1-b7c9-b9c87d57fea5\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Although the n\u00e9gociant wines Mme Bize-Leroy bought for Maison Leroy were brilliant, her lasting contribution to the art of winemaking stems from the rigour and precision she brings to grape-growing and winemaking at her two domaines.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">From the beginning, these domaines have been cultivated organically and biodynamically.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Her conversion to biodynamics in 1988 was among the first in Burgundy, and she led the way for a great many others.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Today, many of the region\u2019s top domaines are certified biodynamic, including Domaine Leflaive (certified in 1997), Domaine Trapet P\u00e8re et Fils (2009), Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair (2012), and DRC (2016), among others.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Mme Leroy specifies: \u2018Among other treatments, the vines receive herbal teas and plant decoctions tailored to the season, weather and temperature.\u2019<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Bottling is done according to biodynamic principles, on \u2018fruit days\u2019 \u2013 when the moon is passing through the \u2018fire constellations\u2019 of Aries, Sagittarius and Leo (her preference is for the latter two).<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">When necessary, vines are replanted one by one using massal selection (taking cuttings from a diverse group of the healthiest, highest-quality old vines) rather than replanting an entire block \u2013 a technique called <em>repiquage<\/em> in French, preserving the older vines and increasing the vineyard\u2019s average class=\"kiosq-b\">The domaine also led the way in introducing a technique known as <em>tressage<\/em> to Burgundy.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Vines grown in this way aren\u2019t hedged in the more common method; instead, the vine tips are folded back over themselves (tressage translates as \u2018braiding\u2019 or \u2018plaiting\u2019).<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Mme Bize-Leroy believes this reduces the trauma to the vine from the traditional hedging, explaining that the vine tip or apex is \u2018the force that pulls the vine from the ground\u2019.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Once the shoots are set, in an effort to encourage photosynthesis the canopy isn\u2019t trimmed. In her words: \u2018<em>Le soleil grille, les feuilles nourrissent<\/em>.\u2019 (\u2018The sun scorches, the leaves nourish.\u2019)<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Some winemakers resist using the technique, arguing that the larger canopies it provides can hold humidity and increase disease pressure, particularly in a humid year.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In all likelihood, however, disease pressure is diminished in the generally hot, dry climate of global warming, and tressage may be the way of the future.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">If some decry this labour-intensive technique because it can triple the staff required to work a vineyard, Bize-Leroy values it for producing tiny, concentrated berries.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Some winemakers also suggest that sugar levels are naturally lower when tressage is used, which can be beneficial in a hot, dry year.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">She goes on to describe another pillar of her philosophy: \u2018Yields are controlled through strict pruning,\u2019 noting that the canes are pruned to three or four buds.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Even in an optimal year, this will yield only 15-16hl\/ha, dipping to 10hl\/ha or less under problematic conditions.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Yields this low are possible only for exorbitantly expensive wines, and Domaine Leroy has some of the region\u2019s lowest yields.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Leroy fans find that such yields give wines of intense concentration, although some top domaines prefer the equilibrium of wines made from higher yields.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">After sorting at the end of the Pinot Noir harvest, the central stem (<em>rachis<\/em>) is removed with scissors, but the bunches are either left whole, re-shaped with scissors, or snipped with scissors and sorted berry by berry.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Above all, the grapes are left whole to preserve the yeast and other microflora on their skins.
