I\u2019ll be doing that next week, because despite my wife&#8217;s\u00a0 protestations to the contrary, I remain the tidiest and most organised of the<br \/>\npair of us. <span style=\"mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\">Anyway, that\u2019s enough of our domestic<br \/>\nshenanigans. There are still<br \/>\nquite a few pubs left for me to tick off in <b>Tunbridge Wells,<\/b> but I fancied<br \/>\ngoing somewhere a little different. mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\">Before describing the day<br \/>\nitself, here are a few facts and figures about the <b>Tonbridge-Redhill<\/b> line, a<br \/>\nroute that was once the main railway artery between the capital and the <b>Kent coast<\/b>.<br \/>\nRather than bury myself in dates and statistics (which, knowing me, would have<br \/>\ntaken all afternoon), I let my <b>Copilot<\/b> friend do the research instead, and this<br \/>\nis what it came back with.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; font-size: small;\"><strong>Redhill\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>line, <\/span>is<br \/>\none of the oldest sections of main\u2011line railway infrastructure in the <b>Southeast.<\/b><br \/>\nIts story is surprisingly rich for a line that today feels like a quiet local<br \/>\nshuttle, so make yourselves comfortable and read on.\u00a0The <b>Tonbridge- Redhill <\/b>line opened in <b>May<\/b> <strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: small;\">1842<\/span><\/strong>, after being authorised<br \/>\nby <b>Parliament <\/b>in <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">1836<\/span><\/strong><\/span>.<br \/>\nIt was part of the <b>South-Eastern Railway\u2019s <\/b>original <b>London-Dover<\/b> main line, running<br \/>\nfrom <b>Redhill<\/b> through to<b> Tonbridge.<\/b> Because it was intended for fast long\u2011distance<br \/>\nrunning, it was designed with <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">few curves<\/span><\/span><br \/>\nand little concern for local population centres, which is why today, many<br \/>\nstations sit some distance from the villages they serve.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; font-size: small;\"><strong>1868<\/strong>,<br \/>\n<\/span>the <b>SER<\/b> opened a new, and more direct main line via <span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: small;\"><strong>Orpington and Sevenoaks<\/strong>,<\/span> with<br \/>\nseveral major tunnels and faster running times. This relegated the<br \/>\n<b>Tonbridge-Redhill<\/b> line to <b><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">local<br \/>\nservice <\/span><\/span><\/b>status. The line became part of <span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: small;\"><strong>Southern Railway<\/strong> i<\/span>n <b>1923<\/b>, and then <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>British Railways Southern Region<\/strong><br \/>\ni<\/span><\/span>n <b>1948. <\/b>Steam services ended in <strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: small;\">1965<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nand were replaced by diesel multiple units.<b>Electrification,<\/b>\u00a0 <b>750 V DC third rail<\/b>, was authorised in <strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: small;\">1990<\/span><\/strong> and completed in <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">1993\u201394<\/span><\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Aptos&quot;,sans-serif; font-weight: normal; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">process<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Aptos&quot;,sans-serif; font-weight: normal; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> that <\/span><\/strong>allowed<br \/>\nthe role of the line to shift again, to a diversionary line for both<b> Eurostar,<\/b><br \/>\nas well as <b>Southeastern<\/b> services, before settling back into today\u2019s all\u2011stations<br \/>\nshuttle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjCS_x9Ji_r2HZjncqf7GduXSm9IuLBIM-6hjD9f1awrgWKJ2LlVOxXnbeyU8j0IbOvn7KckAnOLKHi-pk2LLOs4knhsHg2C2sgYoqHoeDbktyBBbrW_Slp7Z838HyZX1Z-V6Y2zJYWrAWsly8OyENqXZW7cQcXP2vZjghFDPRXyaIELOgZjCR_qcZCE7I\/s2592\/IMAG1531.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1552\" data-original-width=\"2592\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjCS_x9Ji_r2HZjncqf7GduXSm9IuLBIM-6hjD9f1awrgWKJ2LlVOxXnbeyU8j0IbOvn7KckAnOLKHi-pk2LLOs4knhsHg2C2sgYoqHoeDbktyBBbrW_Slp7Z838HyZX1Z-V6Y2zJYWrAWsly8OyENqXZW7cQcXP2vZjghFDPRXyaIELOgZjCR_qcZCE7I\/w400-h240\/IMAG1531.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I became a regular user of the <b>Tonbridge-Redhill<\/b> line, when<br \/>\nI moved to <b>Tonbridge <\/b>at the tail end of <b>1984,<\/b> because coinciding with my change<br \/>\nof address, was me joining, a moribund<b> CAMRA<\/b> branch, and helping to get it back<br \/>\non its feet. So, what was originally the <b>Tonbridge &amp; Tunbridge Wells<\/b> branch<br \/>\nof <b>CAMRA<\/b>, eventually became <b>West Kent <\/b>branch<b>.<\/b> I shan\u2019t go into any more details<br \/>\nhere, but having re-established the branch and formed a new committee, we were<br \/>\ncharged with surveying all the pubs in the area (keg as well as cask), with a view<br \/>\nto selecting suitable pubs for the following year\u2019s <b>Good Beer Guide.<\/b> <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgrVkRCfjtDVL02u0D2qUh-fexCrIh3bWeAcow33Qie_ktGJkOwV4Se7c8kuaFWji_131AuDxB2b-ZvsrDSbYw0NO7pd76MXITDCWgZb7dW3VjNZqfBBo5EogAQjbFxlkY7bRa9eprN9DpbM5fh4i0A6DQxPl2tHhTp4Au-xpVCMlEOwV3D2WnImwv6MPg\/s4000\/IMG_20220826_153229.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2250\" data-original-width=\"4000\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgrVkRCfjtDVL02u0D2qUh-fexCrIh3bWeAcow33Qie_ktGJkOwV4Se7c8kuaFWji_131AuDxB2b-ZvsrDSbYw0NO7pd76MXITDCWgZb7dW3VjNZqfBBo5EogAQjbFxlkY7bRa9eprN9DpbM5fh4i0A6DQxPl2tHhTp4Au-xpVCMlEOwV3D2WnImwv6MPg\/w400-h225\/IMG_20220826_153229.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Quite a task, but I was <b>40 years <\/b>younger then, as were my<br \/>\nfellow new committee members. One stipulation we made was that future branch<br \/>\nmeetings should be held at pubs that were accessible, as much as possible, by<br \/>\npublic transport, and with few bus services operating into the evening, this<br \/>\neffectively meant places close to a station. It was during these surveys that I<br \/>\nfirst became acquainted with settlements along the <b>Tonbridge- Redhill <\/b>line, including<br \/>\n<b>Leigh, Chiddingstone Causeway, Edenbridge<\/b> and <b>Redhill <\/b>itself. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjAG6aOtBdaza5_6m9dIHgOQLYYGcqpdSjrnYkeUcNbjO4JaHBymWcdCIPIBcCGvqtSuPxvPstKSZ_1w0LI-srq3gtE8Hzv_x9rWruhmW6Hy1lNVLls2_Huja_R0cFDbzSq-VG-oG0fMIVut3B8OsQiJ4TiKICwZIA7AfqizFb45NEFMF4gKZgAMUkP1CM\/s3880\/Nutfield%20station.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2212\" data-original-width=\"3880\" height=\"228\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjAG6aOtBdaza5_6m9dIHgOQLYYGcqpdSjrnYkeUcNbjO4JaHBymWcdCIPIBcCGvqtSuPxvPstKSZ_1w0LI-srq3gtE8Hzv_x9rWruhmW6Hy1lNVLls2_Huja_R0cFDbzSq-VG-oG0fMIVut3B8OsQiJ4TiKICwZIA7AfqizFb45NEFMF4gKZgAMUkP1CM\/w400-h228\/Nutfield%20station.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The latter town whilst not within the <b>West Kent <\/b>area, provided<br \/>\nan ideal meeting point for socials with one of the neighbouring <b>Surrey <\/b>branches.<br \/>\nThe <b>Home Cottage,<\/b> owned by <b>Young\u2019s Brewery, <\/b>was the pub of choice, given its<br \/>\nproximity to <b>Redhill s<\/b>tation. I also starting using the line for other purposes,<br \/>\nsuch as travel to work, where <b>Penshurst<\/b> station, provides an occasional<br \/>\nalternative to driving. Just walk away from the down platform, turn<br \/>\nthe corner, and less than five minutes later, you will come across this large,<br \/>\nand much altered, late-<b>Victorian <\/b>establishment. I\u2019m assuming that in its heyday, the place must<br \/>\nhave provided accommodation for travellers, and those stepping inside will be<br \/>\ngreeted by a number of bright and characterful rooms, overlooking a well-laid<br \/>\nout, rear garden. Today, the pub proudly proclaims that it\u2019s a drinks-focused<br \/>\npub, with no kitchen and no fuss, but that doesn&#8217;t mean visitors will go<br \/>\nhungry. Instead, a range of regular, food <b><i>\u201cpop-up partners\u201d<\/i><\/b> bring something<br \/>\nspecial to the table when they visit. I noticed a woman who I\u2019d seen on the train, standing at the bar. She<br \/>\nseemed to know the barmaid and must have hurried away from the station to get<br \/>\nthere before me. The pair paused their conversation to allow the barmaid to serve<br \/>\nme, offering a choice <b>Taylor\u2019s Landlord <\/b>\u2013 complete with the new look pump clip,<br \/>\na <b>Hobgoblin<\/b> ale of some description, and the ubiquitous <b>Harvey&#8217;s Best<\/b>. I opted<br \/>\nfor the latter, but unfortunately, it wasn\u2019t the best pint of <b>Sussex<\/b> that I\u2019ve<br \/>\nhad recently. I also realised<br \/>\nthat my train back towards <b>Edenbridge <\/b>was due shortly, so I returned about a<br \/>\nquarter of the unfinished pint to the bar and apologised to the girl by explaining<br \/>\nthat I wasn\u2019t feeling particularly bright. A <b>white lie<\/b> I know, but one that<br \/>\nprevented a minor diplomatic incident, without bruising anyone&#8217;s ego! The sole cask offering was <b>Taylor\u2019s<br \/>\nLandlord<\/b>, and this time still with the old-style clip. It was also in tip-top<br \/>\ncondition. With the sun now shining, and the temperatures starting to climb, I<br \/>\ntook my pint outside, into the extensive garden, at the rear of the pub, and<br \/>\nsat there enjoying the beer. One could tell it was <b>Friday <\/b>by the number of<br \/>\nbuilders\u2019 vans pitching up, as the thirsty chippie\u2019s, brickies and electricians<br \/>\nfinished their work for the week, to be rewarded with a well-earned pint or<br \/>\ntwo.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;
