Catalina mule deer is to protect endangered species is at best questionable<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>SALEM,\u00a0 Oregon;\u00a0 LOS ANGELES,\u00a0 California<\/strong>\u2013\u2013Blazing gunfire directed at barred owls in the Coast Range of Oregon and at mule deer on Catalina Island,\u00a0 26 miles west of Los Angeles,\u00a0 again demonstrates how successfully adaptive species can become allegedly maladaptive \u201cinvasive species,\u201d \u00a0\u00a0and be massacred,\u00a0 when their presence jeopardizes not endangered species so much as monied interests.<\/p>\n<p>The Oregon Department of State Lands on October 1,\u00a0 2026 became the first agency in Oregon to begin killing spotted owls as \u201cpart of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to kill more than 450,000 barred owls over 30 years in Oregon, Washington and California,\u201d\u00a0 reported Gosia Wozniacka a day later for the <em>Oregonian<\/em>\/OregonLive.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_83197\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_26-10-03_12-38-35-612-1-scaled-e1791056365140.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_26-10-03_12-38-35-612-1-scaled-e1791056365140.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-83197 lazyload\" alt=\"Barred and spotted owls.\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-83197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-83197\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_26-10-03_12-38-35-612-1-scaled-e1791056365140.jpg?resize=295%2C295&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Barred and spotted owls.\" width=\"295\" height=\"295\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a> <em><strong>(Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">$1.2 million to kill 350 barred owls per year for 15 years<\/h2>\n<p>The Oregon Department of State Lands,\u00a0 Wozniacka explained,\u00a0 \u201chas secured permits to kill up to 350 barred owls per year in the 83,000-acre Elliott State Research Forest in Coos and Douglas counties, northeast of Coos Bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe culling will take place year-round for at least 15 years and cost as much as $1.2 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Killing barred owls will purportedly protect endangered spotted owls from habitat competition.<\/p>\n<p>Reality,\u00a0 however,\u00a0 is that spotted owls feed almost exclusively on red tree voles,\u00a0 who live almost entirely in old growth forests,\u00a0 and that the major threat to spotted owls,\u00a0 both now and always,\u00a0 comes from old growth logging.<\/p>\n<p>Killing barred owls will not expand the diminishing old growth habitat that spotted owls need to survive.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_83211\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_26-10-03_13-04-04-246-scaled-e1791057960192.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_26-10-03_13-04-04-246-scaled-e1791057960192.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-83211 lazyload\" alt=\"Ranger shoots barred owl.\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-83211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-83211\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_26-10-03_13-04-04-246-scaled-e1791057960192.jpg?resize=300%2C275&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ranger shoots barred owl.\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a> <em><strong>(Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Oregon Fish &amp; Wildlife \u201cdoes not plan to participate\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to the Coast Range,\u201d\u00a0 Wozniacka wrote,\u00a0 \u201cbarred owls are slated to be killed in the Oregon Klamath region, \u00a0the Western Oregon Cascades, and the Eastern Oregon Cascades, \u00a0according to the federal plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Oregon Department of Forestry told the <em>Oregonian<\/em>\/OregonLive it will also participate in the effort,\u201d\u00a0 Woznicka added, \u00a0\u201cbut does not expect to receive a federal permit until next year and has not yet identified where or when barred owl removals would occur, \u00a0or how many owls will be killed, agency spokesperson Tim Hoffman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Oregon Department of Fish &amp; Kin \u201ctoday dismissed all claims brought by hunting groups and their partners challenging the Catalina Island Conservancy\u201d scheme to shoot the estimated 2,000 mule deer on Catalina island out of existence,\u00a0 in a multi-year extermination campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The Kin ruling followed his September 3,\u00a0 2026 denial of an injunction against the mule deer culling.<\/p>\n<p>Safari Club International and the California Rifle &amp; Pistol Association,\u00a0 both of which sought to preserve 78 years of sport hunting on Catalina Island,\u00a0 joined the Coalition to Save Catalina Island Deer in bringing the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ruling dismisses the case in full,\u201d\u00a0 Barton wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court dismissed the groups\u2019 claims under the California Environmental Quality Act, including arguments over the state\u2019s environmental notice and the California Department of Fish &amp;
