They have not yet confirmed what caused the deaths.

Mariano Coscarella, a researcher at Argentina’s national research council CONICET, told AFP that deaths among calves were unusually high this season. Veterinarians suspect erysipelas, a disease caused by bacteria.

Coscarella said the evidence appeared to point to a natural cause, but he could not completely rule out an influence from human activity.

Local authorities in Chubut province are working with scientists to investigate. Teams have collected samples from the dead whales for laboratory tests.

In an update reported on September 28, environmental specialist Víctor Fratto said early findings pointed towards the suspected bacteria. He said more complete results could arrive towards the end of October.

The deaths have drawn attention to one of the species’ most important breeding areas. Mothers and calves gather around Península Valdés and Puerto Madryn each year.

A CONICET aerial survey on September 6 counted 1,375 southern right whales, including 409 calves. Last year’s survey recorded 2,110 whales, the highest count in 25 years.

Researchers warn against treating that difference as a count of animals lost. The surveys took place at different times, and whales move between areas. The team said this year’s count remained within the expected range.

About The Animal Reader: The Animal Reader is an international animal news organization covering the latest stories about animals from around the world.

Baby southern right whales have died along the coast of Patagonia in southern Argentina since June.
