As a result of the long<br \/>\nhistory of atheism in the Soviet Union, now many people who call themselves<br \/>\nOrthodox Christians represent a passive audience during the Church<br \/>\nService.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>They know how to light a candle<br \/>\nin front of the icon and pray for their individual needs. But few understand<br \/>\nwhat it really means to \u201cglorify and hymn God\u2019s most honorable and majestic<br \/>\nname with one mouth and one heart.\u201d For the most part, singing the Symbol of<br \/>\nFaith and the Lord\u2019s Prayer is the best they can do at the Liturgy. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjXxPbj-ameOzW29nNaKVNY3VK0ehvfdolhBky83aF1rexDfrwcfSeDXkx-NlJXfpXzmnii0ilJm-ML9P5l8HPaD86fyRDMRtmvD_4a3GMgHsUQwnX7nyVIVzLRuLmsMXFpaZlxm6ARm2w\/s1600\/2.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"730\" data-original-width=\"1170\" height=\"398\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjXxPbj-ameOzW29nNaKVNY3VK0ehvfdolhBky83aF1rexDfrwcfSeDXkx-NlJXfpXzmnii0ilJm-ML9P5l8HPaD86fyRDMRtmvD_4a3GMgHsUQwnX7nyVIVzLRuLmsMXFpaZlxm6ARm2w\/s640\/2.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif;font-size: 14.0pt;line-height: 150%\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif;font-size: 14.0pt;line-height: 150%\">In<br \/>\nBelarus there are some parishes where the priests encourage all the<br \/>\nparishioners to sing at the Liturgy. Of course, the introduction of this<br \/>\npractice is a lengthy process, which requires much energy and patience from the<br \/>\npriests and choir conductors. Naturally, common people cannot rival the<br \/>\nprofessional singers who dedicated their whole lives to music. Hence, the<br \/>\nchants performed by the whole Church congregation should be as simple as<br \/>\npossible as far as the melody is concerned. In my opinion, we face yet another<br \/>\nproblem. Although the Divine Liturgy is the most important Church Service, the<br \/>\nVespers and the Matins are much more difficult regarding the structure of the<br \/>\nService. Without long and substantial preparation people with no music<br \/>\neducation cannot even think of taking part in such Services as singers.<br \/>\nNevertheless, even during the All-Vigil Night all the parishioners can sing<br \/>\ntogether a few prayers, such as \u201cVouchsafe, O Lord\u201d, \u201cRejoice! O Virgin<br \/>\nTheotokos!\u201d, etc.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiRY2KLyIQggbJc8a6H9-R49WJ5kD8SLvc21kNUZSd0_XryFgGwUy0_bImQ0k5GJRvGNfI45ImQ4e2RsOt3bmZemcbHspBhEU63kvubnQ-_J6N5YzsRIe0Xu0lFghgvvmRXwU5vjeInNAg\/s1600\/3.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"629\" data-original-width=\"450\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiRY2KLyIQggbJc8a6H9-R49WJ5kD8SLvc21kNUZSd0_XryFgGwUy0_bImQ0k5GJRvGNfI45ImQ4e2RsOt3bmZemcbHspBhEU63kvubnQ-_J6N5YzsRIe0Xu0lFghgvvmRXwU5vjeInNAg\/s320\/3.jpg\" width=\"228\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif;font-size: 14.0pt;line-height: 150%\">I think<br \/>\nthat practicing Orthodox Christian should realize that their participation at<br \/>\nthe Church Service cannot be limited to listening only. After all, the fathers<br \/>\nof the Local Council of 1917-1918 unambiguously stated that the choirs of<br \/>\nparishioners have a right to sing at the Services. As for the professional<br \/>\nchoir conductors and professional musicians, they should be more lenient to the<br \/>\n\u201ccommon people\u201d who possess neither musical skills nor nice voices. By the way,<br \/>\naccording to Saint Ambrose of Optina, \u201cIf you have a good voice, beware of<br \/>\ndemons.\u201d<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Moreover, in the eyes of God<br \/>\nour souls are more important than voices; \u201cwe know that God heareth not<br \/>\nsinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he<br \/>\nheareth.\u201d (John 9:31).
