Now, wool is facing the same scrutiny it deserves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of PETA, <strong>71% of U.S. adults agreed that, from an animal-welfare perspective, raising and slaughtering animals for wool is just as cruel as raising and slaughtering animals for fur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/sheep-at-camera-hp.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/sheep-at-camera-hp-602x293.jpg\" alt=\"Sheep looking at the camera\" class=\"wp-image-1147799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/sheep-at-camera-hp-602x293.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/sheep-at-camera-hp-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/sheep-at-camera-hp-768x374.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/sheep-at-camera-hp-750x365.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/sheep-at-camera-hp.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings come on the heels of PETA\u2019s headline-making protest at the COS runway show during New York Fashion Week and suggest that consumers are recognizing that sheep suffer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-clothing\/wool-industry\/\">wool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-happens-to-sheep-in-the-wool-industry\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happens to Sheep in the Wool Industry?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheep are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-clothing\/wool-industry\/hidden-lives-sheep\/\">gentle, social individuals<\/a> who form close bonds with one another. They seek out friends, look out for their companions, and have distinct personalities\u2014some are bold and curious, while others are more cautious. Yet the wool industry treats sheep as little more than wool-producing machines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PETA Asia recently documented workers at a NATIVA-certified wool operation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/media\/news-releases\/breaking-first-ever-investigation-into-wool-farm-with-ties-to-hm-group-reveals-extreme-cruelty-to-sheep\/\">kicking and stomping on sheep<\/a>, dragging lambs by their legs, and leaving sheep with gaping wounds after shearing. The farm sold wool through a contracted supplier connected to COS\u2019s parent company, H&amp;M Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this wasn\u2019t an isolated expos\u00e9. PETA entities have documented cruelty at more than 150 wool-industry operations around the world, repeatedly exposing workers beating and kicking sheep, cutting them during shearing, and sending them to slaughter when they no longer produce enough wool to be considered \u201cprofitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-peta-takes-the-message-to-new-york-fashion-week\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PETA Takes the Message to New York Fashion Week<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PETA took that message straight to the runway. On September 13, advocates disrupted COS\u2019 New York Fashion Week show, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/wool-protest-nyfw\/?pl=88_25_0\">calling attention to sheep who suffer in the wool industry<\/a> and urging H&amp;M Group to stop selling wool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As protesters spoke out, a fashion executive physically intervened, grabbing and restraining them. Video of the confrontation quickly spread online and drew international attention. For 40%, the protest was the first time they had heard about the issue. Another 41% were already aware of it but said they learned more because of the protest.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-consumers-are-rethinking-wool\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consumers Are Rethinking Wool<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discovering what sheep endure appears to be influencing how people think about what they wear. After learning of PETA\u2019s New York Fashion Week protest about cruelty to sheep in wool production, <strong>42% of Americans said they were less likely to buy wool, while 56% said they were more interested in animal-free or vegan fashion<\/strong>. And the industry has reason to pay attention: 45% said they would view a retailer more positively if it stopped selling wool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every wool sweater, coat, and scarf comes from a sheep whose fleece belongs to them. Never buy or wear wool.
