You have revenue. You have a relationship with the bank. You have a track record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you walk into that same bank with your next big idea\u2014and hear:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the situation Vimal Shah and his brother found themselves in when they decided to move beyond their garment business and venture into soap manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were not complete strangers to business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brothers were already running a garment operation in Kenya. They understood manufacturing, had customers and had established relationships with financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But soap was different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The banks that had financed their garment business were not convinced that they should finance a move into soap manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason was straightforward: they had no track record in the new industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the brothers faced a choice that many entrepreneurs eventually encounter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abandon the idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or find another way to fund it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They chose the second option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Bank Says No<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without the financing they had hoped for, the brothers funded the venture themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1985, they established a small soap factory in Thika.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not the kind of beginning that attracts headlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no massive factory complex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No sprawling multinational operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No guarantee that the experiment would work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a small factory, a new product and the willingness to put their own money behind an idea the banks had rejected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction matters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone else provides the capital, you can sometimes afford to think about scale before the business has earned it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you are funding the business yourself, reality becomes your business partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You start with what you have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You test.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You learn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You reinvest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you grow when the business gives you the resources to grow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the path the Shah brothers took.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the small soap operation was only the beginning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Soap to Edible Oils<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six years after starting the soap manufacturing operation, the business expanded into edible oils.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company kept growing, adding products, brands and markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What began as a small manufacturing venture in Thika eventually developed into Bidco Africa, a major East and Central African manufacturing group with a portfolio spanning edible oils, personal care and other consumer products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company now has more than 60 brands and operates across 18 countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast is striking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The banks saw a company without a proven track record in soap manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to build something new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither side could see the future with certainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the rejection created a circumstance that would become important to the company\u2019s story:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The founders had to build it themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStart Small and Aim High\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vimal Shah has offered a simple piece of advice to entrepreneurs:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStart small and aim high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a deeper lesson hidden inside those six words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStart small\u201d is often presented as if it is entirely a matter of choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for many entrepreneurs, it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you start small because you don\u2019t have access to large amounts of capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes investors aren\u2019t interested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes banks don\u2019t believe in the idea yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes your first product is an experiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the only person willing to bet on the business is you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can feel like a disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But starting small can also force an entrepreneur to develop disciplines that become valuable later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have to understand your customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have to watch your costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have to make every investment count.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have to solve problems with creativity rather than simply throwing money at them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps most importantly, you have to learn how to grow from the inside out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where the second half of Shah\u2019s advice becomes important:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aim high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting small does not mean thinking small.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small beginning can contain a very large ambition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What If the Banks Had Said Yes?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an interesting question buried inside this story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if the banks had approved the loan?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the Shah brothers would have built the same company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they would have taken a different route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the business would have grown even faster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the ownership structure would have looked different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is tempting to romanticise rejection after success has arrived. Once a company becomes successful, the obstacles that once seemed painful can begin to look like necessary steps in the story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But rejection is not automatically good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rejected entrepreneur can fail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A denied loan can kill a viable business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lack of capital can close doors that never reopen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the lesson isn\u2019t that entrepreneurs should be grateful whenever someone says no.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson is different:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the door closes, the entrepreneur still has a decision to make.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you stop?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you change the idea?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you find another source of capital?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you start with a smaller version?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you build enough evidence to make the next person say yes?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Shah brothers chose to start with what they could control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your First \u201cNo\u201d Doesn\u2019t Have to Be Your Last Word<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a dangerous assumption in entrepreneurship that success begins when someone important finally believes in you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bank approves the loan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An investor writes the cheque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major customer signs the contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A partner opens the door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those moments can certainly accelerate a business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they are not always where the business begins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it begins when nobody is convinced yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You make the first product.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You serve the first customer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You reinvest the first profit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You improve the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You try again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, what looked too small to matter becomes large enough that people can no longer ignore it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is one of the most useful lessons in the Bidco story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t confuse a small beginning with a small ambition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The factory in Thika was small.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ambition did not have to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps that is the real meaning behind:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start small. Aim high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first part tells you to respect where you are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second reminds you not to let where you are determine where you intend to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, think about your own journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What opportunity did you pursue after someone told you no?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What did that rejection force you to learn, change or build?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps the bigger question is:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What \u201cno\u201d in your business might actually be asking you to find another way forward?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, the rejection that looks like a wall becomes the foundation of the business you eventually build.
