We\u2019re pretty hopeless at fish identification, so when it comes to diving, unless it\u2019s a truly amazing reef system, we\u2019re generally more interested in something unusual or unique (like an airplane or enormous bommie). <\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-9856\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enter the man-made dive site \u2013 surely the most incongruous scenes to be found underwater. We\u2019ve scoured the Internet in search of videos of the most curious manufactured dive sites out there \u2013 every one of which has now been added to our diving bucket list.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Man-made dive sites<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From historic cities that have crashed into the ocean to artificial exhibitions\u00a0installed beneath the sea, these surreal\u00a0man-made dive sites are utterly fascinating.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Museo Subacu\u00e1tico de Arte, M\u00e9xico<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 2009, <a href=\"https:\/\/musamexico.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MUSA<\/a> (Museo Subacu\u00e1tico de Arte) is an underwater contemporary art museum beneath the aquamarine waters around Canc\u00fan and Isla Mujeres in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/destinations\/mexico\/\">Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project comprises more than 500 permanent life-size sculptures, making it one of the world\u2019s largest underwater art attractions. Its submerged figures offer an unusual perspective on the relationship between art and the marine environment, gradually changing as corals and other organisms colonise their surfaces.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UNDERWATER MUSEUM SCUBA DIVING IN CANCUN MEXICO\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lrpnxEHNW4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main underwater galleries offer different ways to experience the collection. Manchones, near Isla Mujeres, is best explored by scuba diving, while the shallower Punta Nizuc gallery is suitable for snorkelling. Glass-bottom boat tours also offer a glimpse of the sculptures without getting wet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back on dry land, Canc\u00fan combines powdery white-sand beaches with lively restaurants, Maya heritage and plenty of outdoor pursuits. On the eastern edge of the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula, it also makes a useful starting point for exploring Mexico\u2019s Caribbean coast. You can take a boat trip to Isla Mujeres, head south along the Riviera Maya to Tulum or venture inland to swim in cenotes \u2013 natural limestone sinkholes filled with clear water. Allowing a few days beyond the beach opens up a region of tropical forests, archaeological sites and coastal towns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a trip that balances underwater adventures with time to unwind, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iberostar.com\/en\/hotels\/cancun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">all-inclusive resorts in Cancun<\/a> offer a convenient beach base. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iberostar.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Iberostar Beachfront Resorts<\/a> has both family-friendly and adults-only options in Canc\u00fan, with beachfront settings, swimming pools and a choice of restaurants. Spend your days exploring MUSA and the wider Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula, then return for a swim and dinner by the coast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Parco Archeologico Sommerso di Baia, Italy<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the west of Naples lies the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parcoarcheologicosommersodibaia.it\/en\/?id_lingua=en\">Underwater Archaeological Park of Baia<\/a>,\u00a0one of the world\u2019s few underwater archaeological parks. Visitors can dive among a slew of old statues from Baia, a Roman resort city which for centuries catered to\u00a0the recreational whims of the rich and powerful Roman elite. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Parco Archeologico Sommerso di Baia\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FiJAjaS-AS8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the hedonism didn\u2019t last as invading Saracens sacked the city in the 8th century. By the 16th\u00a0century, the remains of the formerly luxurious town had been abandoned and eventually gave way to the sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baia is around 25km (5.5mi) from the ancient city of Naples, the capital of the Italian South. Other sights in the region include Campania, Capri, Pompeii, Salerno, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. \u00a0Dive Bahrain, Bahrain<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hailed as the world\u2019s largest underwater theme park, <a href=\"https:\/\/divebahrain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dive Bahrain<\/a> will cover an area of 100,000 square meters and feature a 70m-long decommissioned Boeing 747 as its centrepiece \u2013 apparently the largest aircraft ever to be submerged.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dive Bahrain Underwater Theme Park: Boeing 747 airplane submerged\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UsZ4u-EgDBU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that the giant aircraft has been submerged, the next phase of the project will see a replica of a pearl merchant\u2019s house and sail structures installed. Future phases may see reef balls, ships and sculptures added to the man-made dive sites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Christ of the Abyss, Italy<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2.5-metre tall bronze statue of Jesus Christ was purposely submerged off the coast of San Fruttuoso, Italy in 1954. Lying 17 metres below the surface, the statue was sculpted by Guido Galletti and is placed near the spot where Dario Gonzatti, the first Italian to use\u00a0SCUBA gear, died in 1947. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Christ of the Abyss, San Fruttuoso Italy 2015\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lIxjmWygwIU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It depicts Christ offering a\u00a0benediction\u00a0of peace with his head and hands raised skyward. There are\u00a0two replicas also placed underwater, the first in Grenada in 1961 and the second off the coast of Florida, USA, in 1962.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, Grenada<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The self-proclaimed \u2018world\u2019s first <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/grenadaunderwatersculpture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">underwater sculpture gallery<\/a>\u2018 was created by British\u00a0sculptor\u00a0Jason deCaires Taylor. It features exhibitions of cement figures installed on the ocean floor, from solitary individuals to a ring of children holding hands. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sinking of Vicissitudes, Sculpture Park, Molinere Bay, Marine Protected Area, Grenada, West Indies\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DC00O590ql8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sculptures are situated at a variety of depths with the deepest at 12 meters. Tourists\u00a0are encouraged to visit the park as it diverts divers and snorkellers from popular natural reefs, allowing time for repair and regeneration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Ancient cities of\u00a0Alexandria, Herakleion and Canopus, Egypt<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around sunrise on 21<sup>st<\/sup> July 365 AD, there was a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/365_Crete_earthquake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cataclysmic earthquake<\/a> around the Greek island of Crete. A tsunami followed and Alexandria\u2019s Portus Magnus and the cities of Herakleion and Canopus in Aboukir Bay were all but destroyed. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The sunken ancient city of Thonis-Heracleion 1, \u00a9Franck Goddio\/Hilti Foundation\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6n5Bb_UOS4I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1992 a research and excavation project began to determine the ancient location of the submerged ancient zones and continues today. Recreational divers can apply for a special permit to join in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Yonaguni Monument, Japan<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Yonaguni Monument is within a submerged rock formation off the coast of\u00a0Yonaguni in Okinawa, Japan. The site\u2019s origins have inspired some debate: some claim the structures are man-made stepped\u00a0monoliths, others say they are completely natural while a third group claims it\u2019s a natural site that has been modified by man. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Yonaguni Monument | The Coolest Stuff on the Planet\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OrvgUpVW8Gk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/history\/article\/yonaguni-jima-japan-underwater-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theory<\/a> is that the submerged stone structures are actually the ruins of a Japanese Atlantis \u2013 an ancient city sunk by an earthquake about 2,000 years ago. Either way, the mystery only adds to the site\u2019s uncannily angular appearance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Underwater post office, Vanuatu<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world\u2019s only underwater post box is located off the island of Efate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/destinations\/things-to-do-in-vanuatu\/\">Vanuatu<\/a>. This undersea branch of the Vanuatu Post Office allows visitors to mail special waterproof postcards by swimming down and dropping them into the mailbox. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Freediving Vanuatu | Hideaway Island | GoPro\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RjVh4mgu9bQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known as the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/travel\/worlds-first-underwater-post-office-180964385\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whale mail<\/a>\u2018, the post office is only three meters underwater, so is accessible to swimmers and snorkellers as well as divers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spent over a month travelling around the Vanuatu archipelago and recommend visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/travel-blog\/trekking-mount-yasur-volcano\/\">Mount Yasur volcano<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/travel-blog\/tanna-island-in-vanuatu\/\">Tanna Island<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/travel-blog\/exploring-millennium-cave\/\">Millennium Cave<\/a> on Espiritu Santo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Sunken pirate city of Port Royal, Jamaica<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known as the wickedest city on Earth throughout the 17th century, Port Royal played host to pirates from all around the world, some coming from waters as far away as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/destinations\/africa\/madagascar\/\">Madagascar<\/a> in the Indian Ocean. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Underwater Pirate Tavern | National Geographic\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tY1o7GIQdjc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pirates congregated at the Caribbean port thanks to its coma-inducing rum, readily available prostitution and its reputation as a haven from patrolling European warships. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 7, 1692, a devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the city causing most of its northern section to collapse into the sea. Today, divers can explore the relics of the ungodly city, now a National Heritage Site that\u2019s been compared to Pompeii for its archaeological wonders. However, special access from the government is required to dive in the restricted Port Royal ruins area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Neptune Memorial Reef, USA<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neptune is a rather <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmreef.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unusual memorial concept<\/a>, located off the coast of Miami in Florida, where cremated human remains are mixed with cement to form the features of an artificial reef. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Neptune Memorial Reef - Neptune Society\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FS-2LVXDLoQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally conceived as\u00a0an artistic interpretation of the Lost City of Atlantis, the site is open to families to dive down and visit their entombed loved ones. The site is also open to curious recreational divers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The memorial is located 12 metres below the surface and includes underwater roadways leading to a central feature with benches and statues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few hours south of Miami is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/drto\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dry Tortugas National Park<\/a>, one of America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/travel-blog\/ranked-least-visited-us-national-parks\/\">least-visited national parks<\/a>. Lying 113km (70mi) west of Key West, the park is largely made up of open water and, as such, only accessible by seaplane. Dry Tortugas is famed for its rare birds, historic military fort and aquamarine waters, home to coral reefs and diverse marine life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Lion City of Qiandao Lake, China<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve saved the best to last: China\u2019s Lion City has been hailed as the most spectacular underwater city in the world. It is also the only freshwater dive site on our list of man-made dive sites. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Scuba Diving the Underwater Ancient Ruins of Shi Cheng (Lion City) at Qiandao Lake in China\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/js_vfTnEJ90?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Constructed in the Eastern Han Dynasty circa 25-200AD, the Lion City can now be found 26 to 40 meters beneath the surface of Thousand Island Lake, an area that was intentionally flooded in the 1950s to create a dam. Currently, Shi Cheng remains undisturbed but there is one dive company that runs trips twice a month to Qiandao Lake and has begun exploring of this submerged city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Chinese-Italian consortium has also started to\u00a0prototype a\u00a0submerged floating tunnel\u00a0across the lake. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Ancient city of Dwarka, India<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ancient city of Dwarka was largely assumed to be a myth. However, in 2000, ruins were discovered in the Gulf of Cambay which reignited the debate. Legend has it that Lord Krishna ruled over the splendid city of Dwarka, comprising hundreds \u2013 possibly thousands \u2013\u00a0of palaces built of gold and silver. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dwarka: Have archaeologists finally found India&amp;apos;s sunken kingdom? - BBC REEL\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zTeCw1twHRY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon Krishna\u2019s death, Dwarka supposedly sank into the sea.
