At the age of 13<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Nick Danziger<\/span><\/a> arrived in Paris with neither plane ticket nor passport,\u00a0embarking upon the first of many adventures to come. The <\/span>London<\/span><\/a>-born, Monaco and\u00a0Switzerland-raised photographer was by nature and nurture a\u00a0citizen of the world. His\u00a0father was a\u00a0New Yorker, son of a\u00a0farmer in turn of the century <\/span>Brooklyn<\/span><\/a>, with Danziger evoking scenes from a\u00a0bygone world while speaking with a\u00a0mid-Atlantic accent. \u200b\u201c<\/span>I didn\u2019t feel particularly British. In fact, there were a\u00a0lot of things I\u00a0didn\u2019t like about Britain,\u201d Danziger says. \u200b\u201c<\/span>But it\u2019s also like T.S. Eliot once said, \u200b\u2018<\/span>And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Danziger first returned to London as a\u00a0young man to study painting and drawing at Chelsea School of Art where he earned an MFA<\/span> and secured representation at the Robert Fraser Gallery. But wanderlust transformed him into a\u00a0photographer. In 1982<\/span>, he began an 18<\/span>-month trip along ancient trade routes from Turkey<\/a> to China. Traveling through Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan on foot and local transport disguised as an itinerant Muslim, he chronicled his extraordinary quest in the bestselling\u00a0<\/span>Danziger\u2019s Travels<\/span><\/i><\/a> (1987<\/span>) and further journeys in\u00a0<\/span>Danziger\u2019s Adventures: From Miami to Kabul<\/span><\/i><\/a> (1993<\/span>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With his vaunted position as a\u00a0top photojournalist, Danziger returned\u00a0once again to the land of his birth. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Being successful, people were always asking me about foreign places and I\u00a0thought, well actually, a\u00a0similar journey could be done in the UK<\/span>,\u201d he says. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Initially when my work was in colour, people would say, \u200b\u2018<\/span>Oh wow, it\u2019s so exotic!\u2019 And I\u00a0was like, \u200b\u2018<\/span>But you know the\u00a0people living there don\u2019t have that experience, that\u2019s not what they are living through.\u2019 Then I\u00a0came to think, in the UK<\/span>, there are a\u00a0lot of paradoxes too.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
