The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel will mark 40 years of brewing onsite this October, celebrating four decades since the historic Rocks pub first began producing its own beer in 1986.<\/p>\n

The brewing operation started out of necessity. According to the venue, a group of sailors drank the pub dry and, with the next beer delivery still days away, the team made the call to begin brewing its own.<\/p>\n

Four decades later, that decision has become a defining part of The Lord Nelson\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

For General Manager and Licensee Kristian Savio, the anniversary is significant not only for the pub, but for the broader history of boutique brewing in Sydney.<\/p>\n

\u201cFounded in 1841, The Lord Nelson stands as a pillar of history in Sydney\u2019s The Rocks precinct,\u201d said Savio. \u201cCelebrating four decades of brewing is an incredibly important milestone not only for The Lord Nelson but for Sydney\u2019s boutique brewing history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the past forty years The Lord Nelson has continued to pioneer the hospitality and brewing industry in Australia, and we feel very proud of this milestone. It truly showcases the longevity that is possible for a local pub brewery.\u201d<\/p>\n

The venue continues to operate its microbrewery at the rear of the pub, producing English-style ales onsite using malt, hops, yeast and water. The beers are unfiltered and unpasteurised, with production taking place just metres from the bar.<\/p>\n

Savio said the venue\u2019s brewing history has remained closely tied to the people who have passed through the pub over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sandstone walls of this historic build have seen many faces, had many custodians and heard many stories,\u201d said Savio. \u201cIt has seen many first drinks, last drinks, celebrations, and everything in between with one commonality, everyone who gathers here has a love for ales brewed right here in Sydney.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt truly is an honour to have so many people share their time and stories with us and it is that which \u2018fills our pint\u2019 when we look back at the past 40 years of history.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 40-year milestone will be marked across the October long weekend, from Saturday 3 October to Monday 5 October, and will kick off a wider year of anniversary activity running through to October 2027.<\/p>\n

Head Brewer Gus Krug has also created a limited-edition ale for the occasion, which will be unveiled this Saturday. The beer is currently unnamed, with The Lord Nelson inviting drinkers to take part in a competition to name the anniversary release.<\/p>\n

According to Savio, the team wanted the beer to reference the venue\u2019s British roots while looking further back into brewing history.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way the anniversary ale came to be was during a conversation about how we commemorate Australia\u2019s oldest Brewery Hotel in a way that not only feels authentic to us but, in a way that we can share it with our customers,\u201d said Savio.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we think about the history of The Lord Nelson, our roots are deeply connected to Great Britain and the sharing of ales with friends, this meant our anniversary ale needed to be inspired by British brewing history.\u201d<\/p>\n

That led the team to look at brewing before hops became widespread, when spices were used to balance fermented grain.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was this sentiment that saw us land on the tale of the spice trade where, before hops in the 14th and 15th centuries brewers would add spices to the blend to balance the fermented grain,\u201d said Savio.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis led to our talented Head Brewer creating a limited-edition ale that is golden in colour, mildly hazy, and has notes of cardamom, ginger root and orange peel, a nod to the foundations of brewing long before The Lord Nelson poured its first pint.\u201d<\/p>\n

The venue will also launch its Coin Bearers Club as part of the anniversary year, with 200 commemorative coins available. Coin holders will receive a range of benefits across food and accommodation, while their names and individual coin numbers will be added to an honour roll inside the pub.<\/p>\n

The anniversary adds another chapter to a much longer hospitality history for the site.<\/p>\n

The Lord Nelson dates back to 1841, with the Georgian building becoming The Lord Nelson Hotel the following year. Today, the venue describes itself as Australia\u2019s oldest continually licensed hotel operating in its original form, as well as the country\u2019s oldest brewery hotel.<\/p>\n

For a venue with more than 185 years of history behind it, the brewing operation remains one of its most recognisable traditions, with its ales still produced onsite under the same roof where they are poured.<\/p>\n
