In Myriam Lemon’s Breakfast Teapot, we see the vessel plastered on a pink background with a fried egg baked into its belly. Grapes cluster on one flank, slices of orange curl around the base and a stack of yellow fruit gathers at the spout. There’s also a tiny man in a blue cap perched on the handle as if he’s about to pour you some tea. In another, a plate is shaped like a head \u2013 he’s called Mr Seitoun, and he has a dark moustache and a heavy green cap studded with grapes. And in another, there’s a speckled jug with a ring handle that has been painted in dark green and yellow to resemble the shapes and composition of cauliflower leaves.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, in her paintings, a grocer stands in his teal-framed Hanout, surrounded by shelves of tins and bottles, with a bicycle leaning against the door. A shoe shiner kneels at a customer’s feet against a wash of pink. In Ramadan Illustration, pomegranates split open beside a golden coffee pot while tiny figures in white caps scramble across the table.<\/p>\n

In Lemon Pie au Citron, a chef in white holds a piping bag above rows of lemon tartlets. And then there’s the stuffing, seen in Grandma’s Roasted Strawberry Cake, where a woman in a blue cardigan bends over a tray of strawberry roll cake in a red and pink kitchen. A teapot boils on the stove, and strawberries are tumbling into a colander. This should be a fair introduction to the world that Myriam has built \u2013 a brightly coloured one made from ceramics, paint and wool, that’s been stuffed with things people want to eat and the everyday objects from life spent in Morocco.<\/p>\n

Myriam is a self-taught French-Moroccan artist<\/a> and illustrator who initially studied business and pastry making in Lille before moving to Tangier, Morocco, with the intention of opening a pastry shop. “While waiting for the renovation work to be completed, I had time to reconnect with my passion for drawing, and my new life in Morocco became an immense source of inspiration,” she says. “I have always drawn, but since moving to Morocco. I have felt a real need to express my dual cultural identity and explore it through my work. Moving to Morocco helped me develop my own style and create my artistic universe.”<\/p>\n

The country feeds her imagination constantly, and she talks about its colours, landscapes and history being a key driver of her work, and about a place “where African, Arab and European influences come together”. That blend, she says, “deeply resonates with my own identity and evokes beautiful emotions in me.” By focusing on Morocco as a subject matter, this has enabled her to connect more with her craft, but also to the country and her family \u2013 who often share memories about Morocco. “When they start talking, everything comes to life in my mind with colourful images.”<\/p>\n

When she’s not sharing stories with her loved ones, you’ll find Myriam on walks or at the supermarket, looking at the everyday scenes unfolding around her to inspire her pieces \u2013 otherwise she’ll be travelling, cooking or looking at art. Once she has these inspirations in tow, she’ll start sketching \u2013 her favourite part of the process \u2013 before redrawing at a larger scale and then either painting or experimenting with another medium, like tufting.<\/p>\n

The result is a plethora of artworks that depict the characters (like donkeys), everyday places (like the supermarket), food items (like her grandmother’s roll cake), towns (like Chefchaouen) and the beautiful landscapes of Morocco. “I enjoy sharing this vision of Morocco, which I believe is still rarely represented: a Morocco that is far greener than the familiar image of dunes and camels. When I look at these landscapes and whitewashed houses. I feel as though magical and fantastical events could unfold there, with women and donkeys as the true heroes.”<\/p>\n

With an aim to reach both local and international audiences, Myriam’s pieces are charming and filled with tales from a dual-identity artist who wants to bring people together, make people smile, and dismantle stereotypes associated with Morocco.<\/p>\n

“I hope that people feel a sense of joy when they discover my work, while also gaining a different perspective on Moroccan culture \u2013 one that moves beyond some of the stereotypes I heard while growing up in France,” she says. “I would like to be seen as an artist who fully belongs to both countries and to show that the blending of cultures can be an extraordinary source of richness. My work seeks to build bridges between cultures.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
