Nothing beats being able to stand in between several active runways to take photos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Every year in the late summer, SEA invites a group of local AvGeeks to what it calls \u201cSEA Airport AV Geeks Airfield Day.\u201d And, what a day it was.<\/p>\n

There were roughly a dozen of us, and after a safety briefing in the airport\u2019s offices, we were assigned to our escorts and headed out to a couple of vans.<\/p>\n

Even in the van, the views were great<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The day started out quite overcast, but by the time we got out on the field in the early afternoon, most of the clouds had lifted and even Mount Rainier (always referred to as simply \u201cthe mountain\u201d in these parts) had started to make an appearance to the southeast.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been lucky enough to get airside at quite a few airports over the years, but SEA remains one of my very favorites, as all three runways are clearly visible, and the mountain views can\u2019t be beat.<\/p>\n

Views? We\u2019ve got \u2019em!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

What was it like being out there on the edges of an access road between the active runways for several hours? It was bliss. Noisy bliss. Yes, we all had hearing protection. And we all seemed to agree that the smell of jet-A is also quite fine.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s fun just to watch the planes instead of always taking photos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n

Being able to hang out gave us time to play around with photo angles, as well as to stop taking photos for a bit and just soak it all in. Being out there for several hours allowed for plenty of photos and<\/em> plenty of time to just be present and enjoy the experience.<\/p>\n

Shout out to the SEA ops and marketing\/media folks for such a fun, safe, and well-organized afternoon! It\u2019s obvious a lot of thought and care went into making this happen.<\/p>\n

Who wants to moon a Virgin?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

There was even a half-moon that rose later in the afternoon, perfect for a well-timed caption joke.<\/p>\n

There were a few specials that afternoon, including Finnair\u2019s Marimekko<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This being Alaska Airlines\u2019 home base, we see their specials here all the time, which is great. But it\u2019s an even bigger treat to see fun international special liveries.<\/p>\n
