Our cruise ship, Ambience<\/b>,
\neased into Belfast <\/b>on a slightly overcast but mostly dry September Saturday<\/b>,
\njust after 8:00<\/b>. The wind was brisk enough to remind us we were in Northern
\nIreland<\/b>, but the weather was kind enough to let exploration win the day. It was
\nour first visit to Belfast,<\/b> and both\u00a0Mrs\u00a0PBT’s\u00a0<\/b>and I were keen to get off the
\nboat and see what the city had to offer.\u00a0Breakfast on board
\nwas a modest affair \u2014 nothing much appealed, so I settled for some granola and
\na couple of slices of toast before we got ourselves ready and disembarked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arrival and first impressions<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

Ambience<\/b> was
\nberthed in the port area not far from Belfast City Airport<\/b>, something we
\ndidn\u2019t notice at first but certainly did on our return when planes were taking
\noff almost overhead. From the terminal we boarded a double\u2011deck shuttle bus
\ninto the city centre, passing the famous Harland & Wolff <\/b>shipyard on the
\nway. With its two colossal yellow cranes dominating the skyline, there was no
\nmistaking where we were; this was the birthplace of the ill-fated Titanic.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

The bus dropped us
\nright in front of the impressive Belfast City Hall.<\/b> We wandered around the
\nshops for a while \u2014 mainly for Mrs PBTs\u2019 <\/b>benefit \u2014 and found all the usual UK<\/b>
\nsuspects: Primark, Boots<\/b>, and even a hardware shop tucked away nearby.
\nAfterwards, we sat for a while on a bench in the pleasant grounds of City Hall<\/b>,
\nwatching the city wake up around us.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Crown Liquor
\nSaloon<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Our main objective for
\nthe morning was the legendary Crown Liquor Saloon<\/b>, which <\/span>is a must-visit
\nvenue for visitors to Belfast<\/b>. This
\nVictorian <\/b>gem, which dates back to 1898 <\/b>and now owned by the National Trust.<\/b>
\nIt\u2019s one of those pubs you hear about for years and seeing it in person doesn\u2019t
\ndisappoint. Ornate tiles, carved wood, stained glass, snugs- the full
\nVictorian<\/b> fantasy.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Despite arriving
\nshortly after its 11:30<\/b> opening time, the place was already buzzing. We managed
\nto secure a booth opposite the bar, and I went to fetch drinks: a Diet Coke<\/b> for
\nMrs PBT\u2019s<\/b> and a pint of Abbeydale Moonshine<\/b> for myself. Unfortunately the Abbeydale <\/b>tasted
\noff, and was definitely on the turn, so I took it back. The young lad behind
\nthe bar tasted the beer and straight away swapped it without fuss for a pint of Timothy<\/b>
\nTaylor\u2019s Landlord<\/b>. Predictable, perhaps, but reliably drinkable.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

The booth next to
\nus was occupied by a rather noisy group, possibly a stag party, or maybe
\nsomething connected to an Orange Order <\/b>demonstration scheduled later in the
\nday. Whatever the reason, the pub was heaving, and as our booth was reserved
\nfor a larger group from 1:00<\/b> onwards, we drank up and may our way out, but only
\nafter exploring the pub\u2019s wonderfully old\u2011fashioned toilet. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lunch and people\u2011watching<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

On the walk back to
\nthe shuttle bus pickup point, we stopped at one of the bakeries in the city
\ncentre and bought a couple of hot sausage rolls. We ate them whilst sat on a
\nbench in the City Hall<\/b> grounds, a simple but satisfying lunch, and a convenient
\nspot to sit and watch Belfast<\/b> go by.<\/span><\/p>\n

We concluded that
\nthe Crown\u2019s<\/b> early rush was probably down to stag and hen parties using it as
\ntheir first meeting point. It certainly felt like the sort of place you\u2019d want
\nto start a big day out, even if 11:30<\/b> is a touch early for some.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back to the ship
\n\u2014 and an unexpected delay<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

We caught the
\nshuttle bus back to the cruise terminal and browsed the small quayside shop for
\nsouvenirs. Departure was slightly delayed: a rock had become jammed in the
\nprongs of the ship\u2019s anchor. Lowering and raising it didn\u2019t help, so a mobile
\ncrane was brought in to remove the offending stone. Once freed, Ambience <\/b>was
\nsoon on her way again, heading south.<\/span><\/p>\n

We spent the next
\nday cruising steadily southwards, before arriving the following morning in the
\nlovely little town of Cobh<\/b> \u2014 a place we\u2019d visited on our first round\u2011Britain
\ncruise the year before.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>A few facts &
\nfigures about the<\/span><\/b> <\/span>Crown Liquor Saloon<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

Located on Great Victoria Street<\/b>, the Crown<\/b> is a
\nGrade A<\/b> listed Victorian gin palace, renowned for its extravagant interior and
\nexterior decoration. Together\u00a0with Liverpool\u2019s Philharmonic <\/b>and the Vines<\/b>, the Crown<\/b> is
\none of the UK\u2019<\/b>s three most spectacular pubs. Built in the 1840s<\/b>, it was
\nrefitted in late Victorian times.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Originally opened as The Railway
\nTavern<\/strong> in 1826<\/b>. The pub was renamed and lavishly refurbished in
\n1885<\/strong> by Patrick Flanagan<\/b>, who
\nemployed Italian church craftsmen to create its signature tiling, stained
\nglass, and woodwork. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Purchased by the National
\nTrust in 1978<\/strong>, restored extensively, and leased to Mitchells & Butlers<\/strong>, who
\noperate it under the Nicholson\u2019s<\/b> brand.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The pub contains ten
\nsnugs<\/b>, each with original bell systems used to summon staff. The snugs were
\ndesigned for privacy during the Victorian<\/b> era.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The exterior is
\ncovered in polychromatic tiles<\/b>, including the famous mosaic crown<\/b>
\nin the entrance, which is the source of the joke that visitors \u201ctrample on the British
\nCrown.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/span>The bar retains gas
\nlamps<\/b> on its ornate carved ceilings, contributing to its atmospheric period
\nfeel. The stained-glass windows
\nfeature painted shells, fairies, pineapples, fleurs\u2011de\u2011lis, and clowns. There
\nis also a substantial amount of decorative acid-etched<\/b> glasswork.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/b><\/p>\n

The Crown<\/b> is definitely worth seeing, and for a dedicated pub
\nman like me, it was like being in heritage pub heaven. On that score, alone, it
\nwas well worth the trip into Belfast City centre<\/b>, and if you love classic pubs
\nwith equal devotion to my own, this is the absolute \u201cCrown\u201d <\/i><\/b>as far as British<\/b> and Irish
