What\u2019s happening?<\/strong> On Thursday, the Washington Sun\u2019s Jeff Stein reported<\/a> that Trump will reprise his 2025 \u201ccrypto dinner\u201d later this year, hosting some of the top investors in the $TRUMP memecoin at his Virginia golf club.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The top 185 holders of $TRUMP will receive an invite to the event, which the website describes as the \u201cMost EXCLUSIVE DINNER IN THE WORLD.\u201d The top 29 $TRUMP holders will also be eligible for a \u201cspecial VIP reception.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What is $TRUMP?<\/strong> As my colleague Adam Clark Estes explained last year<\/a>, memecoins like $TRUMP are \u201call but make-believe.\u201d The coin is a crypto token, or \u201ca type of digital asset that\u2019s built on a cryptocurrency\u2019s blockchain, but it is not a full featured cryptocurrency, like bitcoin.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In other words, buying it doesn\u2019t get you very much \u2014 the value of the coin has collapsed since early last year when Trump took office \u2014 but it will get you a chance to have dinner with the president.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What\u2019s the context?<\/strong> This will be the third major event Trump has hosted for buyers of $TRUMP, following a May 2025 dinner<\/a> at his Virginia club and a \u201ccrypto and business conference\u201d earlier this year at Mar-a-Lago<\/a>, where Trump gave a keynote speech.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But it\u2019s just one of the many, many ways that Trump and his family have found to enrich themselves through crypto: There\u2019s also another memecoin, $MELANIA, and his lucrative crypto firm, World Liberty Financial, which received a $500 million investment from a member of the United Arab Emirates royal family<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Strictly speaking, as Stein points out, Trump himself does not own the company minting $TRUMP, though he still profits handsomely<\/a>, to the tune of $636 million last year, from transaction fees and other revenue. And he\u2019s made even more off World Liberty Financial, which he and his sons do own, along with others: $799 million in 2025 alone, according to financial disclosure forms<\/a> filed earlier this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
