How then have I denied myself anything? I<br \/>\nknow the joy of sharing the treasure. Is that a sacrifice? The shortsighted<br \/>\nworldly folk are verily the real renunciants! They relinquish an unparalleled<br \/>\ndivine possession for a poor handful of earthly toys! \u2026 The world is full of<br \/>\nuneasy believers in an outward security.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">I chuckled over this paradoxical view of<br \/>\nrenunciation\u2014one that puts the cap of Croesus on any saintly beggar, whilst<br \/>\ntransforming all proud millionaires into unconscious martyrs.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Paramahansa<br \/>\nYogananda tells this story about Bhaduri Mahasaya on page 63 of his <i>Autobiography of a Yogi<\/i> (1946) that I am presently reading. In a<br \/>\nprevious post I referred to Yogananda as founder of the Self Realization<br \/>\nFellowship whose grounds in southern California I frequented in college. While<br \/>\nthe supernatural experiences of Eastern tradition reported in this book are<br \/>\nhard for this Westerner to believe, the philosophy is persuasive and powerful.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">While<br \/>\nI have not attained the saint\u2019s dispassion toward rupees and \u201cearthly toys,\u201d<br \/>\nmany if not most of my colleagues in ministry will identify with the saint\u2019s<br \/>\npreference for the spiritual life. To whatever degree we have \u201cgone without,\u201d<br \/>\ngiven the culture\u2019s greater monetary valuing of other professions, we have<br \/>\nrealized our greater dependency on spiritual treasure\u2014the satisfaction of<br \/>\npastoral care, of preaching and writing, of attending to matters of the heart<br \/>\nand soul rather than simply to matter and materialism.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A<br \/>\nchurch member once told me that she was well into adulthood before she<br \/>\nunderstood that ministers were paid! And I\u2019ve met people who think spiritual<br \/>\nleaders should do what they do for the sheer joy of it, unlike other vocations.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWorldly<br \/>\npeople do not like the candor that shatters their delusions,\u201d Bhaduri Mahasaya<br \/>\nexplained to Yogananda. The gurus Yogananda writes about receive rupees in<br \/>\ntheir slippers from followers. And though I am not a guru, I am grateful that a<br \/>\nfew of my readers have put rupees in my slippers!<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">When<br \/>\nI was ordained by MCC in 2005 after a professional lifetime denied ordination<br \/>\nby the Presbyterian Church simply because I\u2019m gay, I chose for the Gospel<br \/>\nlesson Jesus\u2019 words on God\u2019s Providence from the Sermon on the Mount, which<br \/>\nreads in part, \u201cDo not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you<br \/>\nwill drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food,<br \/>\nand the body more than clothing?
