{"id":7072265,"date":"2026-10-02T03:05:17","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T03:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7072265"},"modified":"2026-10-02T03:05:17","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T03:05:17","slug":"scapegoating-special-ed-progressive-org","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7072265","title":{"rendered":"Scapegoating Special Ed &#8211; Progressive.org"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/downloads\/23276\/download\/SpecialEducation1.jpg?cb=b31fd3205abc98879567f36b5047dda6\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"content\" data-transition=\"content\" data-loop=\"false\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">When the squatter currently occupying the White House decides that he wants to do something, there is no dissuading him, no matter how stupid the idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A while back, he decided to do away with the U.S. Department of Education, fulfilling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/how-project-2025-would-devastate-public-education\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (a vow from Project 2025)\">a vow from Project 2025<\/a> and his campaign promise to lower government spending.<\/p>\n<p>And so, shortly after moving back in, the squatter issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/improving-education-outcomes-by-empowering-parents-states-and-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Executive Order)\">Executive Order<\/a> which directed the Secretary of Education to \u201ctake all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities while ensuring the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The squatter does not have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c79zxzj90nno\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (legal authority)\">legal authority<\/a> to eliminate the department. But he can render it as <a href=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/magazine\/the-department-of-education-shell-game-ervin-20260202\/\">ineffective as possible<\/a> by stripping it of funds, staff, and control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>The sketchy timeline of the dismantling goes as follows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In March 2025, the squatter announced that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/21\/nx-s1-5336330\/trump-education-department-student-loans-special-education-fsa\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (wanted to turn)\">wanted to turn<\/a> over the Department of Education\u2019s oversight of students with disabilities to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). That would mean the <a href=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/latest\/a-truly-bad-idea-ervin-20251119\/\">legendary doofus<\/a> HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has repeatedly spouted <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/GMA\/Wellness\/parents-experts-react-rfk-jrs-autism-claims\/story?id=120911306\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (falsehoods and stigmas)\">falsehoods and stigmas<\/a> about people with disabilities, would ultimately be the person in charge of enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement, Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecKennedy\/status\/1903151607430213685\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (posted on X)\">posted on X<\/a> that HHS \u201cis fully prepared to take on the responsibility of supporting individuals with special needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But just a month later, he <a href=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/latest\/rfk-still-hasnt-found-the-cause-of-autism-ervin-20251007\/\">claimed<\/a> at a press conference that people with autism \u201cwill never pay taxes, they\u2019ll never hold a job, they\u2019ll never play baseball, they\u2019ll never write a poem, they\u2019ll never go on a date, many of them will never use a toilet unassisted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last November, the squatter\u2019s administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilityscoop.com\/2025\/11\/19\/ed-department-sheds-several-offices-but-spares-special-ed\/31746\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (announced)\">announced<\/a> that it was entering into six interagency agreements with four other federal agencies to \u201cco-manage\u201d some Department of Education programs. Nothing related to disabilities was included in the programs that would potentially be farmed out.<\/p>\n<p>The administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilityscoop.com\/2026\/06\/16\/ed-department-strikes-deal-to-offload-special-education\/32051\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (said)\">said<\/a> in June that the agency would be entering into more agreements to shift many special education functions to the HHS and certain civil rights work to the Department of Justice. And in September, the nation\u2019s top special education official, Kelly Rogers\u2014who served as the acting assistant secretary for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services since May\u2014unexpectedly resigned just as the plan was scheduled to be implemented.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remain confident in the team\u2019s ability to continue moving forward with strengthened outcomes for individuals with disabilities through the HHS partnership,\u201d Rogers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/09\/09\/nx-s1-5962899\/special-education-kelly-rogers-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (said.)\">said.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrengthening outcomes\u201d is the central message of the squatter\u2019s propagandistic justification for exactly why he is doing this.
