Ron is the author of dozens of books and articles on historical beer brewing including his most recent effort to document British brewing during World War II. You can find his articles and purchase his books from his blog and Youtube Channel which can be found here at <a href=\"https:\/\/barclayperkins.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shut Up About Barclay Perkins<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We begin by discussing some of Ron\u2019s recent travels.<\/li>\n<li>Ron tells us about the Golden Age of UK brewing which started in the 1880\u2019s and lasted roughly up until World War I. He explains why this was one of the best times in British brewing with full strength beers and a wide variety of classic English styles brewed.<\/li>\n<li>He explains the \u201cFree Mash Tun Act\u201d and how it opened up UK brewing to a wide variety of beers and strengths.<\/li>\n<li>Ron tells us about some of the many styles that were popular back then. We also cover why Lagers never took off in the UK in the way that they did in Europe and America.<\/li>\n<li>We talk about why large breweries started buying up pubs to create branded pubs for end to end distribution, and how high license fees on pubs sent several breweries into bankruptcy.<\/li>\n<li>Ron explains the decline of Porter which was wildly popular in the 1700\u2019s but steadily declined in the 1800s.<\/li>\n<li>We also talk about stouts which remained popular despite the fall of Porters.<\/li>\n<li>Ron talks about Brown ale which was introduced during this time period and became popular throughout the UK.<\/li>\n<li>Stock ales and Pale Ales fell in popularity during this time and Ron tells us a bit about why they went out of fashion.<\/li>\n<li>Ron shares where you can find his books and YouTube channel on his blog linked above.<\/li>\n<li>He provides his closing thoughts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>iTunes Announcements<\/strong>: I launched a new <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/beersmith-home-beer-brewing\/id824963861\">video channel for the BeerSmith podcast on iTunes<\/a>, so subscribe now!
