It was the first time Germany has explicitly made such a promise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/sep\/23\/germany-commits-for-first-time-to-phasing-out-fossil-fuels-by-2045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fiona Harvey noted<\/a> in <em>The Guardian<\/em>. Germany\u2019s previous pledges, Harvey added, \u201cwere only for \u2018carbon neutrality.\u2019\u201d Carbon neutrality allows continued fossil fuel use if the emissions are offset\u2014for example, by additional clean energy or tree planting. But only a complete phaseout of fossil fuels can halt global temperature rise.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom, the governor of California\u2014the world\u2019s fourth-largest economy\u2014hailed his state\u2019s decarbonization efforts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/sep\/24\/gavin-newsom-interview-trump-aoc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying in an interview with Covering Climate Now<\/a> that California has run on 100 percent clean electricity nine of every 10 days so far in 2026. And as the costs of solar, wind, and batteries continue to fall, while the Iran war makes gasoline and diesel more expensive, \u201cthe markets are moving in our direction,\u201d said Newsom, who is expected to run for president in 2028. \u201cGlobally, people are realizing [that clean energy] is the better option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An overwhelming majority of people around the world want their governments to take stronger climate action, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-week-journalism-advocacy-oatly-094216eb885f9668ec2d66c1f90d9391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Associated Press recently noted<\/a> in an article about the global oat milk company Oatly endorsing CCNow\u2019s 89 Percent Project. \u201cCompanies should be taking much more responsibility, not only in reducing their own environmental footprint, but really working out how they can use their platform to drive a positive future,\u201d Caroline Reid, senior sustainability director at Oatly, told the AP.<\/p>\n<p>Mirroring this public sentiment, Germany and California are key members of a \u201ccoalition of the willing\u201d that emerged from last year\u2019s COP30 UN climate summit after petrostates vetoed calls from 80-plus countries to develop a global \u201croadmap\u201d to phase out fossil fuels. Collectively, this coalition amounts to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/apr\/07\/iran-war-oil-phase-out-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biggest economic superpower on Earth<\/a>. In April, many of its members met in Santa Marta, Colombia, to begin discussing, in UN Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u2019s words, how \u201cto sequence the decline of fossil fuel investment with the rapid scale-up of clean energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Journalists have a critical role to play as governments work to phase out fossil fuels. That goal can only be achieved quickly\u2014and speed is of the essence, scientists emphasize\u2014if countries implement genuine climate solutions and shun false ones. News coverage that makes clear how well a given policy measures up to what\u2019s needed, as Harvey did with her distinction between \u201ccarbon neutrality\u201d and a fossil fuel phaseout, can keep the public informed and hold policymakers to account.<\/p>\n<p>France and the Netherlands are two more big economies that have released road maps to phase out fossil fuel use. If enough other countries present credible plans for doing so, it \u201cwould send an unmistakable message that the age of oil, gas and coal is ending, and the smart money is shifting,\u201d Mohamed Adow, director of the nonprofit Power Shift Africa, said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/apr\/07\/iran-war-oil-phase-out-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"current-issue-block_52026066fdc2038e223aac6e668d7f5a\" class=\"current-issue  float-l-w-2\">\n<h4 class=\"current-issue__title\">\n                    Current Issue<br \/>\n            <\/h4>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/issue\/october-2026-issue\/\" class=\"current-issue__cover\"><br \/>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/10-26-Cover_online-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of October 2026 Issue\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As the costs of clean energy fall, humanity is in a \u201cfinal battle\u201d against the \u201cevil forces\u201d trying to keep the world dependent on fossil fuels, said Johan Rockstrom, the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impacts Research in Germany, at a Climate Week event. Scientists at Rockstrom\u2019s institute have studied which policies significantly reduce emissions, and which don\u2019t. A paper published in <em>Science<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adl6547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evaluated<\/a> \u201c1,500 climate policies implemented\u2026across 41 countries\u201d and concluded that only 63 of them delivered significant reductions. There is no \u201cone size fits all\u201d solution, but getting fossil fuel prices right\u2014by slashing subsidies and otherwise challenging what US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse calls Big Oil\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/X6Fk6AijLaY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pollute for free business model<\/a>\u201d\u2014is essential. Complementary research the Drawdown Institute released during Climate Week highlighted a number of supposed solutions that are anything but. The institute\u2019s list of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/globalecoguy.bsky.social\/post\/3mwgsi3ol4s2x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weak ideas and greenwashing tricks<\/a>\u201d includes carbon capture and storage, direct air capture of carbon dioxide, blue hydrogen, and corn ethanol.<\/p>\n<p>A frequent topic of conversation at Climate Week was the US midterm elections, which could curb President Donald Trump\u2019s acceleration of climate breakdown if Republicans lose control in Congress, though most Democrats (with important exceptions like Newsom and Whitehouse) are saying little about climate change on the campaign trail. Considering that <a href=\"https:\/\/89percent.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80 to 89 percent of the world\u2019s people<\/a>, and 74 percent of Americans, want stronger climate action, why do so many politicians practice \u201cclimate hushing\u201d? And why do so many voters end up backing candidates who are indifferent at best to tackling climate change?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to remember,\u201d Rockstrom said, \u201cthat citizens have many other problems besides climate change, especially the cost of living. So we need to make it easy for them to choose clean energy options, and that requires good policy.\u201d It also requires, Newsom said, talking plainly about both the dangers and the solutions to the climate crisis.
