whit when it came to losing that top front tooth.

It had been hanging from a thread, that tooth, and oh how I ached to wrench it out! Full Disclosure: I am a pimple-popping, tooth-extracting type of mom. My children run screaming from the room when I come near (not really) so I’ve needed to temper these less-than-savory aspects of my personality in order to serve the greater good.

But seriously? Hanging BY A THREAD, to the point where I was like, “Nicky, PLEASE let me help you with that tooth.” He refused, he flat-out refused because he’s a do-it-myself-keep-your-mitts-out-of-my-mouth kind of kid.

Not that I blame him.

And so it came to pass that on Divine Mercy Sunday, God gave him the grace of a frosted doughnut served after Mass in the presence of friends (okay, me). “You know,” I remarked, with just a hint of spite, “You’re going to take a bite of food and that tooth’s gonna come with.” Lo! Prophetic words were never sooner spoken because that snaggle tooth suddenly flew from his mouth and landed plunk! on the table in front of him.

Nicholas was overjoyed. We all were, really, which is why I’m writing a blog post about it, for crying out loud, and which is why–climbing into the van in the church parking lot later–Nicky engaged the older couple getting into their car next to us. “You wouldn’t believe it,” he said confidentially, “But I took a bite of my doughnut and my tooth just POPPED OUT!” The man grinned widely (I mean, who wouldn’t?) and said, “What a nice way to lose a tooth.”

And it was.

One might even say that it was…”sweet.” ; )
