I posted this test back in 2011, with one eye on light humor, and the other on educating a few of my blog followers.\u00a0 Please enjoy it any way you choose.<\/p>\n

*******************************************************************<\/p>\n

\u00a0(1)<\/strong>\u00a0You can tell if a wine is \u201cdry\u201d, (a) If nothing comes out when you pour, (b) If no \u201clegs\u201c appear after swirling the glass, (c) If it doesn\u2019t taste sweet, or (d) If you\u2019re still thirsty after you drink it.<\/p>\n

COMMENT<\/strong>: If you don\u2019t know it\u2019s (c) , the rest of the quiz may be\u00a0somewhat of a challenge for you. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

(2)<\/strong>\u00a0Wine drinkers love California Chardonnay because (a) It tastes like butter, (b) It tastes like vanilla, (c) It tastes like tropical fruit, or (d) It tastes like . . . well . . .\u00a0all of the above.<\/p>\n

COMMENT<\/strong>: Crazy as it seems, it\u2019s \u201call of the above.\u201d It\u2019s a wildly popular style, but there are indications that many wineries are starting to lighten up on these aspects.<\/em><\/p>\n

(3)<\/strong>\u00a0“The French Paradox” (a) Is an HBO sequel to the famous Gene Hackman movie\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0French Connection,<\/em>\u00a0(b) Clarifies which wine is an appropriate pairing with snails (c) Caused the sales of red wine in America and elsewhere\u00a0to soar, or (d) Explains why a life filled with fromage, p\u00e2t\u00e9s, and foie gras doesn’t decimate the French population.<\/p>\n

COMMENT<\/strong>: A segment on TV\u2019s \u201c60 Minutes\u201d many years ago gave red wine a big push implying it is the underlying cause why someone in France doesn’t\u00a0die every five seconds.\u00a0 The answer is (c) and (d).<\/em><\/p>\n

(4)<\/strong>\u00a0The preferred way to buy wines is (a) The prettiest bottle label, (b) If the word \u201cChateau\u201d appears anywhere on the label, (c) If it costs under five bucks, or (d) Any way you damned well please.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0Research shows that (a) is quite popular. Sales show that (c) is alive and well. On the other hand it\u2019s pretty hard to argue with (d).\u00a0 I’m a believer that the word “Chateau” has some subliminal appeal,\u00a0<\/em>but have no evidence to support that theory.<\/em><\/p>\n

(5)<\/strong>\u00a0Pinot Grigio (a) Is Pinocchio\u2019s brother, (b) Is the Italian version of Alsace\u2019s Pinot Gris, (c) Is an Argentine wine made from Pinot Noir and Grenache, or (d) Is a warning about Viagra\u2019s side effects.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0Leave it to the French and Italians to differ. Pinot Grigio are Pinot Gris are twins, even though quality-wise and stylistically they are quite different.\u00a0 The Viagra thing is a crass, unsubstantiated rumor.<\/em><\/p>\n

(6)<\/strong>\u00a0Rioja is (a) An expletive that Flamenco dancers yell at the end of their performance, (b) A wine bag that Spanish\u00a0sheepherders carry over their shoulder, (c) Spicy Spanish rotisserie chicken, or (d) One of Spain\u2019s premier wine regions.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0It may be served at Flamenco concerts, and sheepherders may love it with their pollo, but wine from the Rioja wine region is one of the great values in world class red wine.<\/em><\/p>\n

(7)<\/strong>\u00a0Pinot envy (a) Was Freud\u2019s field of expertise, (b) Occurs outside of France, (c) Has something to do with Pinot Noir, or (d) Occasionally afflicts short men who drive sports cars.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0There is a certain world envy of Burgundy\u2019s style of Pinot Noir, but not sure if Freud knew about it or\u00a0if short men even\u00a0give a shift. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

(8)<\/strong>\u00a0Acidity is (a) What cleans the palate between bites of food, (b) What results from a nervous stomach, (c) More common in Old World wines, or (d) To white wine what tannins are to red wine.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t let this quiz get you nervous. The other three are correct.<\/em><\/p>\n

(9)<\/strong>\u00a0A wine’s “Finish” is also known as, (a) The aftertaste, (b) The lingering farewell, (c) The tail of the peacock, or (d) The bottle is empty.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0Somewhat misleading and sneaky, but only the real wine geek will know that (a) (b) and (c) all mean the same thing.<\/em><\/p>\n

(10)<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cSuper Tuscan\u201d is (a) Frances Mayes\u2019 next \u201ctell all\u201c book, (b) An Italian weightlifter, (c) A\u00a0very large\u00a0plate of antipasti, or (d) An Italian Sangiovese-based red wine.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0Sangiovese-based red wines are always enjoyed under the Tuscan sun.<\/em><\/p>\n

(11)<\/strong>\u00a0You can tell if a wine is full bodied, (a) By the shape of the bottle, (b) By the wine\u2019s weight on your tongue, (c) By how deeply your teeth are stained, or (d) By how much your joints ache the next morning.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0It has to do with alcohol level, but (b) is the correct answer, even though I know some people who swear by (c) and (d).<\/em><\/p>\n

(12)<\/strong>\u00a0Europe\u2019s Appellation system has something to do, (a) With growing apples, (b) Guaranteeing a product\u2019s authenticity, (c) With rating their adult movies, or (d) With the movement of heavenly bodies.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0If the label says \u201cBordeaux\u201d it\u2019s the real thing. Authenticity is what the system is all about.<\/em><\/p>\n

(13)<\/strong>\u00a0Chablis and Burgundy, (a) Are mountain grown wines, (b) Come in large, screw-cap half gallon bottles, (c) Are French appellations, or (d) Were invented in Modesto, California.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0They\u2019re quintessential French wines, no matter what the people in Modesto say<\/em>.<\/p>\n

(14)<\/strong>\u00a0The basic food and wine matching rules are, (a) White wine with fish, (b) Red wine with meat, (c) Pink wine with anything, or (d) We don\u2019t need no stinking rules.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0As in all matters of the grape, do what you want, even if it means beer.<\/em><\/p>\n

(15)<\/strong>\u00a0A wine\u2019s appearance, aroma, and flavor are most significantly determined by (a) The age of the vines, (b) The age of the winemaker, (c) The use of manure, or (d) The use of whole cluster fermentation.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0Sorry, trick question. None of the above. The \u201canswer is \u201c grape variety,\u201d because its inherent nature, will determine those vital qualities.<\/em><\/p>\n

(16)<\/strong>\u00a0Wine appreciation requires, (a) A pronouncing dictionary, (b) Deep pockets, (c) A temperature controlled wine cellar, or (d) Special decanters and expensive wine glasses.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0While some wine geeks have \u201call of the above,\u201d none are really required.<\/em><\/p>\n

(17)<\/strong>\u00a0Aging potential is something that (a) Is not for sissies, (b) Not all wines have or need, (c) Is one measure of a wine\u2019s quality, or (d) Occurs naturally if you take your daily stroll.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0All of the above. I know (a) and (d) have nothing to do with wine, but it\u2019s my quiz<\/em>.<\/p>\n

(18)<\/strong>\u00a0Anticipated maturity is when (a) One moves from cola to wine, (b) One buys a refrigerated wine vault, (c) One starts collecting Social Security, or (d) A wine is at it plateau of drinkability.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0Irreverent types may say \u201call of the above,\u201d however, the answer is (d).<\/em><\/p>\n

(19)<\/strong>\u00a0Sauvignon Blanc is (a) The white version of Cabernet Sauvignon, (b) The same wine as Fum\u00e9 Blanc, (c) The same wine as France\u2019s Pouilly-Fum\u00e9, or (d) The same wine as France\u2019s Sancerre.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0You\u2019re a true Sauvignon Blanc fan if you know that (b), (c) , and (d) contain the same grape<\/em>.<\/p>\n

AND THE FINAL, MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION IS:<\/strong><\/p>\n

(20)<\/strong>\u00a0If you know the appellation, (a) You know the grapes, (b) You know the wines, (c) You know more than most American wine drinkers, or (d) People think you\u2019re a wine snob.<\/p>\n

COMMENT:<\/strong>\u00a0No matter what people may think of you, the first three are accurate.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ******************************************<\/em><\/p>\n

ABSOLUTELY FINAL COMMENT:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0If you got fewer than 10 correct, you need to start uncorking more wines and stop drinking all that\u00a0Bud Light<\/em>.\u00a0 Between 15 and 19 correct means your wine corkscrew is wearing out and will soon need replacement.\u00a0 And if you scored a perfect 20, then it means your friends surely look forward to a festive dinner\u00a0at your home.<\/span><\/p>\n
