The direct-to-streaming animated Sony title showed a massive box-office potential too \u2014 two months after <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>\u2018 debut on Netflix, its singalong version grossed estimated $19M over just two days at No. 1, with all circuits playing it except AMC which had boycotted Netflix in the past over its reluctance to commit to a 45-day theatrical window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tNot surprisingly, Netflix is planning a \u201cbig, broad, global\u201d theatrical release for the sequel to the family smash, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/11\/kpop-demon-hunters-2-release-date-1236608237\/\">expected in 2029<\/a>, the streamer\u2019s co-CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/ted-sarandos\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ted-sarandos\" data-tag=\"ted-sarandos\">Ted Sarandos<\/a> revealed at Bloomberg\u2019s Screentime Wednesday night while discussing Netflix\u2019s evolving theatrical release strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tUpcoming movies that will hit theaters first before launching on Netflix include Cannes Best Director winner <em>La Bola Negra <\/em>(Oct. 16)<em>, <\/em>Peter Berg\u2019s<em> Mosquito Bowl <\/em>(Oct. 30)<em>, <\/em>David Fincher\u2019s<em> The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth <\/em>(Nov. 25)<em>, <\/em>Danny Boyle\u2019s <em>Ink <\/em>(Dec. 11)<em>,<\/em> Greta Gerwig\u2019s <em>Narnia: The Magician\u2019s Nephew <\/em>(Feb. 12, 2027) and animated title<em> Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory<\/em> (Nov. 5, 2027).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cOn one end of the spectrum is <em>La Bola Negra, Train Dreams<\/em> last year that could have played in the theaters for six months and it wouldn\u2019t have impacted, it would have done net positive on Netflix,\u201d Sarandos said. \u201cThose kind of art house films play like that. And then the other end is the kind of four-quad family rewatch movie, so we said let\u2019s take those two and treat them different. We\u2019re going to do a big wide release for <em>Narnia<\/em> next year, and then we\u2019ll do a big wide release for <em>Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory<\/em> at the end of the year. We think they\u2019ll do great, and when the <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<em>Narnia, Charlie<\/em> and <em>La Bola Negra<\/em> are getting 50, 47 and 46-day theatrical window, respectively; for <em>Cliff Booth<\/em> and <em>Mosquito Bowl<\/em>, it\u2019s 27 and 26, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOn those movies, Netflix will also report boxoffice for the first time. What would the streamer consider a success for a film first released in theaters? <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt won\u2019t be tied to the P&amp;L itself, relatively low expectations that will add much to the financial outcome of the film itself,\u201d Sarandos said. \u201cIf you\u2019re gonna say, pick a little risk to the Netflix performance, it should have the potential for a very big upside in the theater. So, for <em>Narnia<\/em>, for <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>, that\u2019s why they\u2019re gonna get big, broad, global release. But I think in the other ones where it\u2019s kind of in the middle, that\u2019s where it gets tougher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSarandos noted that the most watched movies of all time on the platform are Netflix originals, beating pay-TV window titles, \u201cexcept for the kids and family movies because they get a lot of rewatching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFor the rest, boxoffice success does not necessarily translate into streaming success. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cNo disparaging movies in the boxoffice, but movies that come out in the theater do pretty well, what happens is the most passionate audience went to see it in the theater, so by the time it comes to Netflix, you\u2019ve lost that passionate audience, and you got the people that go, \u2018Oh, I meant to see that,\u2019 or \u2018I\u2019ll get around to that.&#8217;\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSarandos said that last year, Netflix put over 30 movies in the theaters for various periods of time, keeping some on the big screen after its streaming release, including <em>Frankenstein,<\/em> which stayed in theaters for six months. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KPop Demon Hunters has broken streaming records for Netflix, amassing 325.1M views in its first 90 days on the platform and spending 63 consecutive weeks in the Global Top 10.
