Jean-Pierre is a\u00a0photojournalist in the traditional sense \u2013 a\u00a0fly on the wall documentarian of the world around him. As such, rebellion becomes an attitude, rather than a\u00a0specific political viewpoint in the book \u2013 rebels appear through activism, fashion, art, music and even religion in his photographs. And it\u2019s an attitude that ultimately Jean-Pierre and Eliane see themselves reflected in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of the last photos in the book is a\u00a0portrait of the couple in 1966<\/span>, soon after they arrived in the USA<\/span>. \u200b\u201c<\/span>America was a\u00a0totally different country, and these rebels changed the country for the better,\u201d Eliane remembers. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Between the young people protesting the war, hippies with their music, women wanting more freedom and gangs in the ghetto creating hip hop<\/a> music and fashion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>And in many ways Jean-Pierre and I\u00a0were also rebels,\u201d she continues. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Jean-Pierre\u2019s family wanted him to be a\u00a0doctor, and my family wanted me to be a\u00a0writer \u2013 we didn\u2019t want any of that so we escaped to this country to find freedom. We were very lucky because in the \u200b\u2019<\/span>60<\/span>s and \u200b\u2019<\/span>70<\/span>s we did find that freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n
