Their arrival has drawn attention not just for its rarity, but for what it represents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>SGNP remains the only national park in India where people can see lions, tigers and leopards within a major metropolitan city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>But that claim comes with a complication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Because while all three species are present here, they do not \u2014 and largely cannot \u2014 live together in the wild.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span>A park that holds what the wild keeps apart<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Sanjay Gandhi National Park sits within Mumbai, a city of over 20 million people. Photograph:<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefreebird.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/07-IMG20241226091833.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em> (The Free Bird)<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Nowhere else in India can citizens encounter all three apex predators in one landscape so close to dense urban life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But do they really coexist?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span>Why lions and tigers don\u2019t share a \u2018home\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Lions and tigers, despite sharing the same country, are separated by ecology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Asiatic lions are confined to Gujarat\u2019s Gir landscape, where open forests and grasslands support their pride-based behaviour. <a href=\"https:\/\/thebetterindia.com\/wildlife\/tigress-sahyadri-tiger-reserve-operation-tara-maharashtra-forest-restoration-11247507\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tigers, by contrast, occupy dense forests<\/a> and mangroves, relying on solitude and ambush to hunt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>They are not just geographically apart. They live differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Lions move in groups. Tigers move alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Put them together in the wild, and the overlap becomes conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Both are apex predators competing for the same prey. In a shared habitat, this competition would intensify, increasing the risk of confrontation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Their hunting styles also clash \u2014 lions depend on coordinated group hunting in open spaces, while tigers rely on dense cover to ambush prey alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Even historically, where their ranges may have overlapped, they likely avoided direct interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The popular imagination of lions and tigers sharing space \u2014 often rooted in the idea of the lion as the \u201cking of the forest\u201d \u2014 does not hold in reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span>So, can they coexist at all?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The answer is both no and maybe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>In the wild, coexistence is highly unlikely. An encounter between a lion and a tiger would lead to avoidance or conflict, not cooperation. There have been cases where cubs raised together form social bonds that override instinctive hostility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Behavioural adaptations \u2014 such as different activity times or spatial separation \u2014 can also reduce<a href=\"https:\/\/thebetterindia.com\/wildlife\/rare-fishing-cat-sighting-rajaji-uttarakhand-wetlands-wildlife-conservation-efforts-11457834\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> conflict<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>This is not natural coexistence.
