However, if you prefer organic gardening, plant-based products, or simply want to keep synthetic repellents around your home to a minimum, you may be wondering if you can take the same natural approach to keeping these tiny blood suckers away.

Fortunately, there are several ways to repel ticks naturally without relying solely on conventional repellents and pesticides.

Research supports a variety of natural approaches, including topical applications and other preventive practices. At the same time, it also points to some important limitations, making these methods best used alongside other tick control measures rather than on their own.

Natural Tick Repellents for Skin and Clothing

Certain plant-derived repellents can make you less appealing to a questing tick as you go about your outdoor pursuits. Skin-applied products are commonly available as sprays, lotions, or balms, whereas clothing treatments are usually spray applications. In either case, always follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific product you choose.

Essential Oils and Plant-Based Repellents

Essential oils are among the most studied natural options, although their effectiveness can vary depending on the oil, concentration, formulation, and the duration of protection they provide.

Below are some of the essential oils that have demonstrated tick-repellent properties, including the key compounds responsible for those effects:

Oregano: Rich in carvacrol and thymol

Rosemary: Contains 1,8-cineole, camphor, and borneol

Spearmint: Contains carvone

Thyme: A rich source of thymol and carvacrol

Geranium: Especially rose geranium oil, which contains geraniol, commonly used in some commercial insect and tick repellents

Cedarwood: Contains cedrol and related compounds

Clove: Rich in eugenol, a naturally occurring compound with both insecticidal and repellent properties.

What is it about these botanicals that makes a tick turn the other way? It’s easy to think these oils simply smell repulsive to ticks, but it’s actually a little more interesting than that.

Ticks don’t have noses the way we do. Instead, they rely on specialized sensory organs, particularly Haller’s organs on their front legs, to detect carbon dioxide, body odors, heat, and other cues that help them locate a host. The volatile compounds in these natural ingredients can interfere with those sensory cues or cause ticks to avoid treated surfaces altogether.

Keep in mind that concentrated essential oils aren’t without risks. They can irritate the skin and may also be harmful to pets if used improperly. Avoid experimenting with homemade recipes. Instead, follow the manufacturer’s directions for dilution and application.

Which Essential Oil Is the Most Effective?

Studies have produced different “winners” depending on the tick species, concentration, and how the oils were tested.

Clove stood out in Le Mauff et al.’s 2024 study testing numerous natural oils against lone star ticks. Researchers found it produced the strongest contact repellency, followed by geranium and oregano. But when researchers switched from treated surfaces to a human fingertip test, patchouli was the only essential oil that produced statistically significant repellency.

Meanwhile, in Soutar et al.’s field study testing treated clothing in tick-infested woodland, oregano and spearmint showed the strongest overall potential against Ixodes ricinus ticks among four essential oils. Researchers also found that both were nearly as effective as a 20% DEET repellent.

Another experiment by El-Seedi et al. produced a different result. When rosemary, spearmint, marjoram, and basil oils were tested against Ixodes ricinus nymphs in the laboratory, rosemary showed the highest repellency at 100% (followed by spearmint and marjoram).

When the two most effective oils were later tested in the field, rosemary continued to outperform spearmint, although both showed lower repellency under field conditions.

Are Essential Oils as Effective as EPA-Recommended DEET?

The takeaway is fairly consistent across recent research: natural repellents can provide protection against ticks, but their repellency doesn’t last nearly as long as DEET.

Luker et al. (2023) tested 10% formulations of 20 minimum-risk ingredients against blacklegged ticks using a human-skin assay. (For context: active ingredients the EPA considers to pose minimal risk to human health and the environment when used as directed)

Cinnamon oil, clove oil, and geraniol ranked among the best performers, each providing more than an hour of complete protection. Even so, none of the minimum-risk ingredients remained fully protective beyond two hours, whereas 10% DEET continued protecting against ticks throughout the entire six-hour test.

A similar pattern emerged in Burtis et al.’s 2024 study comparing 11 commercially formulated minimum-risk repellents (most of which were botanical-based) with two EPA-registered products containing 25% DEET.

While 10 of the 11 natural repellents initially performed similarly to DEET after 30 minutes, their protection declined rapidly thereafter. By the 2.5-hour mark, none remained effective, whereas both DEET products maintained at least 97% repellency throughout the entire 6.5-hour study.

This being the case, natural repellents shouldn’t be treated as the sole line of defense. Instead, they’re best used alongside other preventive measures, such as wearing protective clothing, performing tick checks after spending time outdoors, and avoiding tick-prone areas whenever possible.

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus

Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) is a plant-derived tick repellent made from the lemon eucalyptus tree. It deserves its own category because it has something many natural repellents don’t: EPA-registered formulations that have undergone safety and efficacy testing.

Its primary repellent ingredient, para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), can either be extracted from OLE or produced synthetically for use in commercial repellents.

Don’t confuse oil of lemon eucalyptus with lemon eucalyptus essential oil, as many people do. The essential oil hasn’t undergone the same safety and efficacy testing required for EPA registration, which is why the CDC doesn’t recommend it as a tick repellent.

How to Naturally Repel Ticks From Your Yard

Applying repellents to your skin or clothing is one way to reduce your chances of being bitten. An even better place to start addressing the problem is your own yard. By making it less hospitable to ticks, you’ll have fewer of them to worry about in the first place, especially if you don’t always remember to apply repellents before heading outdoors.

Apply Natural Tick Yard Sprays

Natural tick sprays classified by the EPA as 25(b) minimum-risk pesticides often contain plant-derived ingredients such as cedarwood, peppermint, geranium, and other essential oils. The same compounds that give these oils their distinctive scents can throw ticks off the trail when they’re looking for a host, making them effective natural repellents.

When spraying, concentrate the treatment on common tick habitats, such as wooded borders, tall grass, beneath shrubs and low-lying vegetation, around stone walls, and other shady or brushy areas.

Use the product as directed on the label and reapply when recommended, particularly after heavy rain or extended periods of wet weather.

Plant Tick-Repellent Plants

If essential oils can help repel ticks, why not grow the plants themselves? Lavender, rosemary, mint, marigolds, chrysanthemums, and geraniums, many of which we’ve already discussed, naturally produce the same aromatic compounds found in their essential oils that have demonstrated tick-repellent properties.

That said, don’t expect the same level of protection as a concentrated yard spray. What these plants can do is add another layer of defense while bringing more color, fragrance, and pollinator-friendly blooms to your yard.

If you already enjoy growing these plants, consider incorporating them around patios, walkways, decks, and other areas where your family spends time outdoors.

Just choose your plants carefully. Mint, for example, spreads aggressively and can quickly form dense patches that ticks prefer. Likewise, some ornamental plants with repellent properties, such as chrysanthemums, can be toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, so keep your pets in mind when planning your garden.

Remove Leaf Litter and Yard Debris

Grab the rake because leaf litter provides exactly the kind of microclimate ticks like. Layers of fallen leaves protect them from direct sunlight and help retain humidity near the ground. It gives ticks somewhere to shelter from hot, dry conditions they struggle to survive in.

Remove brush piles and other unnecessary debris at the same time, and stack firewood neatly somewhere dry rather than leaving it scattered on the ground.

Keep Your Lawn Mowed

Regular mowing removes one of ticks’ favorite hiding places: tall, dense vegetation that holds moisture and protects them from direct sunlight.

Keep grass relatively short during the growing season, and cut back tall weeds and brush along lawn edges. Pruning shrubs and low branches can also allow more sunlight to reach shaded sections of your property, reducing suitable tick habitat even further.

Make Your Yard Less Attractive to Wildlife

Ticks can’t fly or jump, so they depend heavily on animals to feed and move around the landscape. White-footed mice and other small mammals are important hosts for immature blacklegged ticks, while white-tailed deer are the primary hosts for adults.

With that in mind, keep garbage bins securely closed, clean up spilled birdseed, store pet food indoors, and keep woodpiles tidy and dry, so rodents have fewer places to shelter. If deer routinely browse your property, install physical fencing around gardens or other frequently used areas.

Tick Infestation? Call a Professional ASAP

Natural tick repellents make the most sense when you’re trying to reduce the occasional tick encounter and make your property less inviting to ticks.

But if you’re regularly finding ticks on yourself, your children, or your pets, or you’re seeing them throughout different parts of your yard, it’s a sign that preventive measures alone may no longer be enough.

At that point, prompt, comprehensive action can keep an established tick population from becoming a much bigger problem.

Modern Pest’s professional tick control combines targeted treatments with Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which goes beyond simply spraying and killing the ticks present today. However, that doesn’t mean ticks hate their smell, even though that’s often how we describe it.

Ticks use specialized sensory organs on their front legs to detect chemical cues from potential hosts. Whether they actually perceive these compounds as unpleasant isn’t known.

Does Vinegar Repel Ticks?

There isn’t strong scientific evidence that household vinegar reliably repels ticks. While you’ll find plenty of DIY vinegar sprays online, you’re better off using a plant-derived repellent with demonstrated effectiveness, such as oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or products containing other proven active ingredients.

What Can I Put in My Yard to Keep Ticks Away?

You can apply a natural tick yard spray containing plant-derived ingredients such as cedarwood, peppermint, or geranium oil. You can also create a 3-foot-wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between your lawn and wooded areas, which helps separate frequently used spaces from tick habitat.

What Plants Keep Ticks Away?

Plants such as lavender, rosemary, chrysanthemums, mint, marigolds, and geraniums are recommended because they contain aromatic compounds associated with insect- or tick-repellent activity.

Mid Adult Woman Spraying Her Legs With Insect Repellant While Sitting in Nature.
