The
\n past few weeks have been sheer madness. Andrew and I are drowning in
\nrepairs \u2013 the bench is overflowing. I can\u2019t quite put my finger on why.
\nMaybe it\u2019s the weather. Maybe it\u2019s because watchmakers have stopped
\ntaking apprentices, or because Omega now quotes a 12-month turnaround
\ntime. Who knows. What I do know is that more often than not, we\u2019re
\nforced to turn away jobs that simply don\u2019t make sense \u2013 either
\nunprofitable, or with parts that no longer exist.<\/p>\n
And then, amongst the mountain of Omega and Rolex, a familiar face
\narrived from Queensland: a Seiko Wogmaster. Yes, the very one we sold
\nnot that long ago. I knew it was coming, because I\u2019d taken the
\ncustomer\u2019s call. New watches don\u2019t just die without a reason. I was
\nexpecting something small \u2013 a loose screw, maybe a jammed rotor.<\/p>\n
On the outside, the watch looked perfect. No scratches, no dents,
\nnothing. But the moment I removed the case back, the story was written
\nin plain sight: the hairspring was a mess, hopelessly tangled. It only
\nhappens when a watch takes a fall, or suffers a heavy knock \u2013 golf
\nswings are notorious.<\/p>\n
But here\u2019s the part that moved me: once the hairspring was set right,
\nthis humble Seiko 5 came back to life with an astonishing amplitude,
\nrunning at +2 seconds a day. Better than most Swiss luxury watches I see
\n on this very bench. That\u2019s not luck. That\u2019s Seiko.<\/p>\n
I love Seiko. Especially the ones we\u2019ve sold. They have soul. They remind me why I became a watchmaker in the first place.<\/p>\n
And no, I won\u2019t tell the customer that his watch was dropped. He doesn\u2019t
\n need to carry that guilt. This repair is on me, free of charge \u2013 return
\n postage included.<\/p>\n
Why? Because when I hold a Seiko in my hands, I feel my grandfather and
\nmy father standing beside me. Both of them spent their lives repairing
\nSeikos. When I breathe life back into one, I feel them with me. A
\nWogmaster on my bench is not just a repair \u2013 it\u2019s a family reunion.<\/p>\n
